Call Me Thumper

At least temporarily ... because the old adage about saying something nice or nothing at all just allows a lot of things that should be slammed and slammed hard from getting the unpleasant attention they deserve.

I tried ... oh I tried! To keep the foot floppin .... but some things just NEED to be said...........

And so it is with the case of Bookseller McNally-Robinson who just this last week (Dec. 29) filed for bankruptcy protection.

So what did them in?

Well ... in my view a couple of things...
One- and ingrained liberal naivete
Tw0- Stemming from that willful blindness ... a decision to bank on the "Center" of the Canadian Universe ... as our self proclaimed betters in The Big Smoke .... as they should be! Right?

That's where the money and the literati reside is not?

From the Financial Post:

"Iconic downtown Toronto book stores Pages and David Mirvish Books closed their retail outlets this year after decades of operation. Nevertheless, the low-margin business of book sales is holding up, with overall sales rising 3.8% in Canada in the third quarter, according to BookNet Canada."

Well it seems NOT... eh?

What passes for literacy in many places these days consists of nothing more than occasional purchases of discount romance novels and drooling episodes over the pages of rags like the Toronto Star. The closest most people these days come to actual literature is reading about it in the review by some quasi erudite snob in a newspaper such as already mentioned or possibly as a category of "Jeopardy".

Well? Ain't that the truth?

And so Toronto being the cultural leader of all Canadians and the great trendsetting metropolis that shows all us rubes how things are supposed to be .... performs exactly as should be expected. That is .... leading the way down the cultural toilet.

Holly dear Holly .... what did you expect? Hanging with the likes of Gordon Sinclair will get you nothing but a load of idiotic ideas and indigestion.

File this under "F@rk" Toronto baby... Pearls Before Swine.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year TOO !

A Holiday Beer !

Nostradamus Doppelbock............

Another old friend that reappeared recently.

Dark brown body that produces a short lived cream coloured crown.

Rich malty aromas riding on top of bakeshop and topped by wonderful floral and fruit hop perfumes.

The palate is pleased with the creamy sensation and the flavours of buttery biscuits, nuts and chocolate. Just a hint of dried fruits and a clean finish that leaves me wanting more.

This is a dangerous brew that conspires to entrap the unwary with many charming and pleasureable sensations while hiding a potent spirit. 9% abv

I'd keep it down to one or maybe two at a sitting and leave time for a snack.
I'm having left over turkey meat on baked dressing smothered in gravy, cranberry marmalade, and mixed nuts with mine.

I predict that there will be more of this in the future...

Other people have Opinions Too Hmmm..

Cheers!

The Spirit of the Season

With these days off from the daily grind of work I've been tempted to spend some of my free hours wandering around the usual web sites and blogs.

And you know what?

There are just too many folks out there wasting the precious days away with just more of the same old bitching and moaning about the same old things.

So in the spirit of the season .... which is more than just one day ... or should be ... I will avoid the tedious ... or try to ...

And in that spirit try to share some things that bring me simple joy.

One of these things would be anecdotes from some of my musical heros:

And Here is : A little bit of Leslie-Unplugged!

A Holiday Beer !

File this one under "just because"......

An old friend is Samuel Smith's Imperial Stout.

So much malty caramel goodness that you can hardly tell there are hops in here.

But ... hops there are ... that give a twang of bitter citric bite and clean up the finish so you can enjoy another long draught.

It's dark dark dark and burnt caramel delight....

Give us more!

And God Bless us one and all!

Cheers!

A Christmas Friday Beer

Wonderful thing this day ... family, presents, good things to eat and drink......

Say hello to Traquair Jacobite Ale.

A beer it seems that is worthy of sharing on this hallowed day. After all beer itself is a gift from God and as such we should show our due appreciation.... Thank you.

I admit to indulging somewhat selfishly in a few personal treats every year at this time, and this year I meant to catch up on the new brews in the LC store .

And so this year found a bounty of fresh samples to partake of..... One of which: A product of Scotland's Traquair House Brewery ... this wonderful beverage shows all the love that a fine craftsman can put into a product.

Brewed to celebrate the anniversary of the 1745 Jacobite rebellion the ale is based on an eighteenth century recipe the is spiced with coriander which gives a remarkably fresh aftertaste.

The pour delivers a smart looking tawny head that hangs around until the first draught. The body is a rich burnt caramel colour and barely passes a backlight through the still liquid.

The nose is a pleasant and stimulating combination of sweet fresh cut summer grass with the mouth watering aromas of bake shop.

The palate is a real treat that that gives the impression of an almost coffee like tartness that is mellowed and refreshed by the herbal and citrus quality of the hops. The malts reprise the earlier bakeshop aromas on the taste buds and the overall quality is sweetness with a clean finish. The mouth feel is just a little creamy and everything finishes with a clean and refreshed sensation.
Personally .. I cannot tell that there is coriander in the mix but for me the whole experience is just a pleasure and leaves me wanting more.

Other opinions are Quite Positive as well .....

What better way to celebrate such an important birthday?

Peace on Earth and Goodwill to men.

Cheers!

Our Happy Socialist Paradise - According to Dan Lett

The Sausage Factory himself.... and writer for the Winnipeg Free Press:

"The public sector is the major driving force in the economy of most provinces."

I heard this today while driving home from work with the radio tuned to The Great Canadian Talk Show. The heart of a socialist tool laid bare in one simple statement.

Lett was on with the host Marty Gold ... his pseudonymous self ... making as nice as can be with the frequent target of his many emotional outbursts about the feeble effort of the Freep and it's writers to produce a worthwhile product.

Responding to questions concerning the state of Manitoba's economy and the performance of the NDP in managing the same... Sausage boy was busy spinning madly to convince the audience that things are not so bad ... after all what's $490 billion when you've got the magic money tree to go to?

Actually he had me sucked in for a moment or two when he (Lett) acknowledged to some degree the fact that someone who voted for Greg Selinger on the basis of his "Balanced" budgets might lack some understanding of the reality behind those budgets.

BUT ... then ... of course he went back to an apologetic tone about how certain months are tougher and leaner for the government because ... Now Here It Comes!!! ... Hydro Revenues are down. Of course this affects the appearance of fiscal mismanagement as being worse after April.

According to .... Sausage boy... it's the "Appearance" of fiscal mismanagement the "Idea" of incompetence!

Sure thing Meat!

Now let us get a couple FEW of things straight shall we?

First - We live and function in a Capitalist society where the markets are Supposed to be allowed to work. Like it or not ... this is the fact of our nation and our economic foundation. Capitalism and market competition are not theories to be debated but are the way things work.

Second -
Any interference by government in the economy undermines the ability of that market and economy to function. This is true whether or not the intention of the interference is to create a greater good or to rectify some perceived imbalance.

Third -
The One and Only way any government can obtain financial resources is to take money out of the economy. It does not matter whether they do this by borrowing, which devalues the currency and places an ongoing economic burden on the entire public. Nor does it matter if done through taxation. The result is detrimental to the economy and therefore to the wellbeing of the public.

Fourth -
It does not matter if it is done by rifling the bank accounts of public corporations such as Manitoba Hydro which is simply a theft of the assets that rightfully belong to the stake holders ( that would be every single resident of Manitoba) as well as to force those citizens who use Hydro to pay greater costs in compensation for the loss of assets and revenue at the Crown corporation. The result is detrimental to the economy and therefore to the wellbeing of the public.

Fifth -
No matter how much money a government redistributes it cannot claim to be "Driving " the economy. This is because the wealth has been taken FROM the economy in the first place and because there is no possible way to do this without wasting resources. The result is detrimental to the economy and therefore to the wellbeing of the public.

Sixth -
Because of the 5 factual reasons stated above any government that has become the largest economic influence in the economy under their jurisdiction has done more harm than good. The result is detrimental to the economy and therefore to the wellbeing of the public.

And that ... Sausage boy is why economic ignoramuses like yourself and your NDP friends should never, ever be left in charge of a piggy bank let alone a public trust. It is the reason why socialist governments always ... every time... without exception end up broke and in debt.

It is also the definition of incompetence.

There no excuse for this depth of ignorance.

Unfortunately it is the norm for lefticles in government and sycophants in the public and the media to remain willfully and happily immersed in the belief that they can and will get different results if they just keep doing the same things over and over.

And THAT is a working definition of deranged.

Unless of course their intention is to undermine the economy and impoverish the public.

That would be a working definition of traitorous!

The result is detrimental to the economy and therefore to the wellbeing of the public.

Journalist Deaths at All Time High - 2009

And the comments .... Are Murder!

h/t to SDA .

From Reuters,

The press freedom group said the 2009 tally compared to 42 deaths in 2008 and surpassed the previous record of 67 deaths in 2007 -- when violence was at its worst in Iraq, which had been the deadliest country for journalists for six years.

This year Iraq dropped to No. 3 on the list of deadliest countries with four journalist deaths, the lowest annual tally recorded since the U.S.-led invasion of the country in 2003.

The Philippines topped the list with 32 deaths -- 31 of which happened during a massacre in the South of the country in November. Somalia, which western security agencies say has become a safe haven for militants, including foreign extremists, came in second with nine media deaths.

"This has been a year of unprecedented devastation for the world's media, but the violence also confirms long-term trends," said CPJ Executive Director Joel Simon. "Most victims were local reporters covering news in their own communities.

"The perpetrators assumed, based on precedent, that they would never be punished. Whether the killings are in Iraq or the Philippines, in Russia or Mexico, changing this assumption is the key to reducing the death toll," he said.

All but two of the 2009 victims were local journalists, the Committee to Protect Journalists said.

Sad .... it is true that many of these victims are nothing more than local stringers who feed local media organizations and sell their stuff to the likes of Reuters and AP who then proceed to use it as propagda in their efforts to daemonize our Western democracies.

But as we have witnessed across the world over the last ten years in particular ... many of these local stringers are activist propagandists in their own right who make up stories and fake reports including staged photos, falsely attributed photos and some of the most absurd efforts to "photo shop" images.

And you might note how the very piece that reports the death stats of the journos takes the opportunity to Blame America by connecting the 2007 Iraq stats to the "US Led Invasion"while making no mention of Who did the killng (Sadamites and foreign,non-Iraqi thugs). In case of the current Record Holder ... the Phillipines it is blithely tossed off with NO mention of who did the killing there. ( Islamist thugs)

So... in the first five or so paragraphs the Reuters writer and editors have managed to misrepresent two major factors that are germain to the situation.

The comments on the Reuters site are indicative of the effect this is having back here.

A Shining Example of Worthlessness

And these are the people that most of the sort who "believe" in Global warming would hope to settle all their grievences...

The EU and the WTO take 16 years to arrive at a "solution" to a problem that never existed except for their own determination to create and nurture that problem....

Call it "The Long Banana War" :

The European Union ended one of the world's longest-running trade battles Tuesday as it agreed to cut import tariffs on bananas from Latin America grown by U.S. corporations like Dole Food Co., Fresh Del Monte Produce Inc. and Chiquita Brands International Inc. The settlement, which must still be backed by national legislatures, means cheaper bananas for Europeans, more profits for U.S. fruit firms and lower revenues for some former EU colonies.

And not to put too much emphasis on the actual implementation of the "Solution" ....

It will take another 8 years to put an end to this farce.

Now didn't Canada go to the WTO to get some help with something just a few short years ago?

A Little Schadenfreude and a Beer Thank You

I do not suffer fools lightly .... but I do enjoy witnessing the suffering of fools as consequence of their character. A banner day in some respects....

How can anyone so ignorant be a reporter for AP? Seriously? -- David Deming, University of Oklahoma....

From News Busters... some scientists put ...

AP's Science Writer #1 ... in his place.

Although the question is a couple of years old it shows two things:

ONE- That the AP science writer has been an ass for at least two years.
TWO - That even bright guys like David Deming do not necessarily understand how AP works ... abysmal ignorance is a prerequisite for their writers.

But more to the point ... we had a fine example of the character of these MSMers just today...

Mother Nature and some UN Bureauflunkies... Provide the opportunity for Sparky to shine for us some more....

"A group of journalists stood for many hours in near-freezing temperatures Monday waiting to get into the United Nations climate change conference in Copenhagen."

"....among them was Associated Press science writer Seth Borenstein ..."

A man screamed "I don't need food. I need socks! I'm freezing my ass off out here."

Lending substance yet again to my assertion that ...
"As a group the MSM are the stupidest people on the planet!"

It's been a good day .... in fact a banner day... to see these fools whining like spoiled children about being cold and wet.

Thanks to News Busters and SDA

Maybe Seth would like me to run my new 4x4 for a while?

In any case I am going to goand savor a beer (and some popcorn) with my enjoyment of the spectacle of the suffering fools.

A Comment on The Blogs

In respect to the fact that the "One" has accomplished absolutely nothing positive on the domestic or foreign front, (Other than those things which could be done by edict and in support of the lunatic congress of Nancy Pelosi and co. AND if you consider any of those things positive) it seems the good folks in the media and other activist groups are seeking ways to explain away what was completely predictable ... and was completely predicted by those of us with functioning brains and an awareness level above that of an 8 year old.

A comment found at Instapundit:

Plus, from the comments: “There have been no major institutional changes in the United States government in recent history that have caused it to ‘become ungovernable.’ There just isn’t enough political support to enact various news laws and policies that you favor. Tough. If you hadn’t become seduced by the delusion that Obama is a ‘progressive’ and that last year’s election represented some kind of historic realignment in favor of ‘progressive’ policies you might have seen this coming.”

A Mirror on Our Own Society?

This is a fine example of the dynamics at work in a prosperous society. It's not that the people are worried about a decline in population ... it's the bureaucrats.

Who knew that CHINA would be the hotbed of the new age Yuppie?

From USSNeverdock and the WaPo..............

SHANGHAI -- Wang Weijia and her husband grew up surrounded by propaganda posters lecturing them that "Mother Earth is too tired to sustain more children" and "One more baby means one more tomb."

They learned the lesson so well that when Shanghai government officials, alarmed by their city's low birthrate and aging population, abruptly changed course this summer and began encouraging young couples to have more than one child, their reaction was instant and firm: No way.

"We have already given all our time and energy for just one child. We have none left for a second," said Wang, 31, a human resources administrator with an 8-month-old son.

Does China now offer a mirror on our own society?

I am reminded of the propaganda campaign that began to manifest itself in our educational system some 40 years ago in regard to "Planning Parenthood" .... and note the continual rise of immigration to fill the void.

Isn't that working out really well?

An Object Lesson

In learning when to STFU...

You will note the confused writing and reporting from this unattributed article in the

Red Rag of Toronto....

Excerpt:

For Peter Watts, life can be stranger than science fiction.

Watts – who has written six such books – was on his way back to Toronto last Tuesday after helping a friend move to the U.S. Before crossing the Blue Water Bridge into Sarnia, American customs officers pulled him over. He says when they began rifling through his car and luggage, he got out. They ordered him back in the car; he asked what was going on.

What happened next has become the talk of the blogosphere: Watts too has waded in on it, posting that he was assaulted, punched in the face, pepper-sprayed and thrown in jail for the night, only to find that he was the one charged – with assaulting a customs officer.

Customs officials told the Star Watts was given directions "and became non-compliant...he did not follow directions and a physical altercation" ensued.

I doubt that anyone should have to be subjected to sharing their oxygen or space with such a rancid walking bile duct.

And for Mississaugians the answer should be clear ... stop voting for her ... get her out of the trough and keep her out.

Unfortunately for Parrish, the restaurant owner wasn't impressed, and after emailing hera rebuke he's been busy telling his story to the local papers. Parrish apologized, but now has gone into a sulk because everyone is being so mean to her.

My New Project

I've begun collecting data on the effects of climate change and the socio-economic impact of it's effects on the intelligence of the emotionally unbalanced and the mentally deficient.

I hope to acquire funding from the Suzuki Foundation among others that finance climate studies.

My source data comes from global sources. These sources are the daily published efforts of the public media; news organisations, broadcasters, general publishers etc.
Some of the data derives from the stated positions of politicians.
I won't bother to look where the data is too nebulous and scattered to be of any use so the study will discount the proclamations of celebrities and entertainers.

Preliminary analysis seems to indicate that global warming makes ordinary idiots into complete morons.

I'm sure this can be proven conclusively provided that I am funded adequately.

Given enough financial resources I am sure there can be a consensus among my fellow researchers.

We invite you to contribute to this important field of research.

The consequences of delay could be are sure to be catastrophic.

The Suckers List OR Fifteen Excuses for Being a Chump

Found at !NoPasaran!....
Apparently the work of Don Surber ..... and so it is!

They called us Global Warming Holocaust Deniers — sneered at us, snarked at us, and snubbed us.
None of them bothered to read “The Emperor’s New Clothes.”
I have no time for paybacks or saying I told you so.
But pay attention to why they fell for this billion-dollar hoax which almost became a trillion-dollar tragedy.

1. The pseudo-intellectuals fell for it because none of them ever cracked a science book.

2. The policy wonks fell for it because it gave the government more control.

3. The bleeding hearts fell for it because they always want to save the Earth.

4. The communists fell for it because it portrayed capitalists as destroying the Earth to make money.

5. The capitalists fell for it because they saw a new way to make money.

6. The Hollywood crowd fell for it because it made their pampered lives seem to have a meaning and purpose.

7. The newspapers fell for it because it was new.

8. The teachers fell for it because it was a new thing to teach the children to teach their parents.

9. The children fell for it because they wanted to show how well they are doing in school.

10. The parents fell for it because they wanted their children were doing so well in school and they wanted to be supportive.

11. The utility companies fell or it because they can raise rates.

12. The Nobel Peace Prize committee fell for it because Al Gore should have won in 2000.

13. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences fell for it because Al Gore should have won in 2000.

14. The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (Grammys) fell for it because Al Gore should have won in 2000.

15. The 30,000 scientists fell for it because while it was not in their field of study, they wanted to be supportive of science.

The only people who didn’t fall for it were we mouth-breathing, Bible-thumping, beer-guzzling, cousin-humping, baby-bumping, overfed, inbred, illiterate, gun-clinging, buck-toothed, trailer-park-living, truck-driving, ATV riding, Wal-mart shopping, knuckle-dragging, military-supporting, ain’t-recycling, patriotic, homophobic, xenophobic, sexist, racist hillbillies with cooties.

BTW - Unlike Don ... I do have plenty of time for paybacks and "I told you so" !

The Climate Change Ponzi for Chumps

As I said over two years ago .... the ambition of the governments that began supporting climate change action initiatives was not to make the world a cleaner or better place to live.

It was always about the UN dream of moving western capital to the third world by coercion and stealth. A dream of undermining the foundations of western economies and supplanting the will of democratic governments with the authortarian rule of an untouchable bureaucracy.

Where the stealth fails the coercion kicks in. Under tax regimes that overburden manufacturing and energy producing industries (sticks) combined with taxpayer funded incentives (carrots), the big government types are prepared to force the western taxpayer (you sucker) to pay for the relocation of western industries to Asia and other points east and south.

Under the guise of the IPCC manufactured consensus of science the UN and a host of willing thieves have conspired to impose their will on the economies that sustain this world.

That'd be YOU again sucker.

Picture the film classic The Godfather.....

The MOB is the UN and the EU statists .... in all probability the current US administration is in the bag as well.

They are making offers that the hapless private industry cannot refuse and the payoffs come from the money they stole from your bank accounts and the protection rackets they've been running under the guise of social programs. Those who will play along get the payoffs those who try to fight it get the dead horses head, the halibut and a visit from Luca Brazzi's tax garrote.

And so it goes that as the circus has descended on Copenhagen ... for the "Last Chance" to save the world. The reality of the Ponzi is on display for those not too distracted by the fast shuffle at the big show:
In Europe Where the carbon credits flow... freely.
We have just one example (not a lone case) of a business that couldn't afford to say no to the MOB.

In Britain ...
Earlier this year, Corus – part of the Tata Group Europe - disclosed that its UK steel inventory was "close to exhaustion" and analysts are expecting improved earnings from second-half trading as production is increased to meet a rebound in demand.

So in a damned if you do and damned if you don't situation the steel manufacturer choses 1.2 billion $ in Euro funds as a bribe to shut down and play ball with the EU and their pals.

The shareholders get a one time palm greasing and the business is gone along with the jobs and the future prospects for thousands.

If you need examples from closer to home just take a look at the avalanche of failures in California that the Obama adminsistration is hell bent on rewarding with the tax dollars of the American public.

So far here in Canada it's limited to providing life support for failed industries in the once "Golden Horshoe" but don't think for a minute that we are imune.

When even our so called Conservative government sends a "Climate Huckster" off to join the other hogs at the trough in Denmark ... you are damned close to having your future locked into the same fate.

The game plan of the malignant socialists in cooperation with the haters of humanity in the Green industry is the de-industrialization of the west and along with that goes the future of your children who will be doomed to a life without any hope of prosperty and servile dependence on the state.

And if you do not understand what that means .... go read some history... to make it simpler for you read some history of the USSR or Pre 1945 Germany.

Just Because!

There are some things in motor sports that bring joy to my heart.

One of these is Classic Italian Motorcycles from the post WWII era ... Like these :

Works of Art

Coinciding with the awakening of my love for two wheeled motor transport "Cycle World" magazine published a road test of this bike in 1967:

Very much ahead of it's time with a double overhead cam in line four cylinder engine and twin front disc brakes combined with shaft drive. This should have been the motorcycle of choice for the long distance tour and sport touring enthusiast. However, poor (virtually non-existent) distribution and sales operations in the US and Canada along with a steep price tag $3000 helped to keep this from happening.

An interesting side note is that CW Magazine had this test/demo bike for sale after the article appeared ... as I recall they were asking $600 bucks or some ridiculous low price for it.

To think I could have owned this classic! Oh well..................

Wednesday Just Because

Did you know that Norton has been resurrected? Well I didn't .... Of course there have been rumors and snippets of tech talk along with other stuff that sounded more like wishful thinking than real news.

But it turns out to be more than hot air ..... they have bikes!

Anti -Troop Charges ?

"Critics say PM's anti-troop charges unfair"

So says the Toronto Sun headline!
It would make a person consider that they were charging the PM with making "Anti-Troop" charges.....

To be sure .... PM Stephen Harper made NO anti-troop charges at all not in any way shape or form is anything that the PM said "Anti-Troop"!

What our Prime Minister said was that the LIberal politicians and their sycophants ... like the stooge at the Toronto Sun are more interested in creating controversy than in listening to facts.

You can read the rest of this piece of LIberal propagandizing by someone called Althea Raj...
