Friday's Beer!

Thanks to Darcey at The Broom and the National Beer Program ...

I get to sample another brew from Alberta... It's Alley Kat's Amber Ale and its a nice treat!

An ordinary Canadian standard 341ml bottle contains the 5% abv product.

I found the bottle I had to be a little less lively than I expect. However she poured into a nice little head that disappeared a quickly on top the dark amber liquid in my glass.
There's a lot of good things going on with the nose .... a nice just slightly citrus hop and some earthy and warm malts that give off a little of that bake shop burnt sugar aroma that I like so well.

Nothing overpowering and nothing bad.

This one feels creamy and smooth on the palate and the flavours are just like the nose.

After a few swallows and just about finishing the glass a pause to let it all settle in and there was a bit of that chocolate aftertaste they talked about on the label.

Pretty nice for a small Canadian brewery.

VANCOUVER - The move by Vancouver Olympic organizers to go with three mythical creatures for mascots may be a mistake according to one marketing expert.

According to Lindsay Meredith, mascots Sumi, Quatchi and Miga are Pokemon modern. The Simon Fraser University marketing professor says it's difficult to sell something that needs explaining.

He says the Sea Bear, Sasquatch and Spirit Animal all need explaining.

He points out a sasquatch is known in B.C. and Washington State, but few others in North America know that big foot and sasquatch are the same.

However Meredith notes Olympic rings on a product always help something sell.

The Pied Piper of Political Correctness!

Now that the doctrines of political correctness have been entrenched in our society and institutions created to begin enforcing the arbitrary restriction of speech and even thought ....

We are now inflicted with the creation of our first "Pied Piper".

If you are familiar with the story you may recall that the Village of Hamelin had a problem with vermin. The hapless townsfolk seemed to be incapable of dealing with the problem and put out a plea for professional assistance. Along came the Piper with his magical flute and seeing the opportunity to make some money agreed to use his powers to rid the town of the vermin.
As the story goes the lazy and duplicitous residents reneged on his payment and the Piper said OK then we'll see what happens. Then he Piped away the children. When the residents realised what had happened they were bereft. Their children were lost to them forever and the Piper was gone.

On the surface a simple cautionary tale about paying ones debts and honoring agreements!

I always felt that the Piper was essentially an evil character in that if he had really wanted the business transaction to be honored then he would have returned the children for the cash ransom that the villagers would gladly paid after being taught their object lesson.
Instead he chose to leave without the payment but presumably in possession of the most important and valuable thing they'd had. Almost like the end game was to steal the future of the Hamelinians. Another view is that the moral here is that you should not trust others to do what you should do for yourself because the price could end up being far too great in unexpected consequences.

In things that hit closer to home I find a similarity to this story in the matter of Richard Warman and his crusades against those who offend him.

Just Because It's Friday!

" A wheat beer from the good old days ! " They say .

Erdinger Weissbier Dunkel (dark) A new find for me at the local MLC store.

You know that as they say "You cannot judge a book by the cover" but sometimes you can't help being impressed by a dark beauty in a sleek black gown wearing gold and red accents. I'll admit .... this one caught my eye and that's why I brought her home.


Chilled to 40f the 500ml bottle opens without any fanfare from the live yeast that allows the beer to mature in the bottle. ( at least this one did not POP ) And a quick whiff at the mouth yields some interesting molasses and malt aromas.

A gentle pour into the tall beer glass produces a massive golden cream hued crown of froth.
I got 3/4 glass of foam with only a small pour! After settling down to about 2" on top I gave it another try. On the second pour I manged to get the glass 4/5 full of luscious dark bubble filled liquid with bubble rising from deep in the glass and holding that rich crown of cream up at the top.
A sample for fragrance from the glass gives the impression of a spring garden with the first fresh grass and the earliest buds on the fruit trees. A sweet sensation like the smell of a beautiful girl's hair in the sunlight.
The thick foam can be eaten off the top like whipped cream on a cappuccino a rich and smooth treat.

Once the top is consumed and a few cursory sips taken the body yields up some more of that bake shop sweetness.

Each taste is a reinforcement of what the nose had promised.... there are no disappointments here. The flavour is complex and gentle and the texture smooth and creamy sensuous.

The end of each taste is clean and pure leaving only the inkling that you need to go back for more. This bee provides one of the best experiences possible and is the closest thing to sex in a glass that I've tried up until now. It's like breakfast, lunch, dinner, desert, music and sex in glass.

Drink this one with good music playing and the lights down low. If you want to put it over the edge of pleasure ...... do it with an intimate friend! Don't be afraid to engage all of your senses with this dark beauty.....
I say these are the good old days!

Lowest Common Denominator!

Comprehensibility tools are used to determine whether the written material you produce is suitable for the audience you are trying to communicate with.


Words such as - Haecceity or defenestrate or encapsulate or abstruse or assay or unequivocal - tend to push up the level of incomprehensibility. So do complex sentence structures and large paragraphs as well as the use of devices such as footnotes and reference identifiers.

Depending on the characteristics of the incomprehensibility tool technical jargon may be weighted as high or may be ignored.

In any case, the primary reason the tools are used is to facilitate better and more effective communication.
That's the business world.

In the bloggosphere they seem to be used as a measure of how intelligent or erudite the author may be or visa-versa.

Someone who copies and pastes or simply quotes a lot of verbose essays or editorial material may be recognized as an upscale wizard of words or someone without any sense no education or intelligence may get what appears to be a much better evaluation than they really deserve.

On the other hand a fellow with a wry sense of humor and some wit can elevate his standing by a little creative splattering of multi-syllabic verbs and adjectives.

You can try it yourself! Rate your favorites or rate yourself. Try a few of your least favorites.

It's called the Blog Readability Test and anyone can use it.

Draw your own conclusions!

Flogging the Merry Go Round Ponies!

In the day by day presentation of news our media sources seem to be struggling (to put it politely) to get consistent factual presentations of events out to the public.

Read ANY newspaper or watch ANY TV news source on any given day and if you have the slightest inclination you will see gaping holes in the fabric of the information being presented.

Dig deeper into the sources of these stories, to the news bureaus: Reuters - Associated Press - Canadian Press etc. and you will be confronted with endless examples of unconfirmed, unattributed, overly editorialized, inaccurate and sadly just plain false reports.

Now I would never suggest that gathering news is an easy task and there are those who point out that with the advent of 24/7 media outlets the task of keeping the pipelines full is truly daunting.

BUT ..... and this is the BIG issue ..... How does this in any way justify the deliberate falsification of reports?
In the many examples of reports that have been proven to be false or blatantly inaccurate, how does the circumstance then justify the DEFENSE of such reports by the News Bureaus, the publishers and the networks?

How can these agencies continue to recycle these same reports that have been proven false or inaccurate again and yet again?

How can the agencies justify the continued use of sources that have been shown to be guilty of manufacturing, conflating and otherwise falsifying reports?

How can these agencies claim to hold any sort of credibility when they continually refuse to behave in a credible manner?

From the Mohammed Al-Dura affair of the French TV journalist collaborating with Arab terrorists to set up staged murder of a child. To numerous incidents of faked evidence in Lebanon in support of terrorists and such incidents as the faking of numerous other deaths and injuries in the ME to be subsequently used as anti Israeli propaganda.

Fake ambulance bombings, faked destruction of buildings and infrastructure, faked death scenes, faked and staged protests, faked reports of atrocities ( while very real atrocities go unreported), staged displays of civilians being targeted by military where the fact that these same civilians were being used as shields or distractions by terrorists is ignored and unreported and it goes on ad nauseum.

That's just the outline of proven abuses by the entire spectrum of our Mainstream Media over the last seven years or so and just limited to ME events that involve Israel and other ME locations. In each and every one of these examples the agencies attempted to defend their reporting and even after proven wrong tried to deflect the criticisms.

I'll have to forgo listing the political reporting malfeasance for now but for those of you who follow this particular milieu I have just one thing to say at this time.

Wilson / Plame ! The confabulation of US Democrats and willing media where A Whitehouse staffer was falsely accused of a security breach and then railroaded for "Lying" to the court in his hearings in spite of the FACT that he was proven completely innocent of the charge he faced.
When Scooter Libby was found guilty and sentenced did the MSM include that fact?

Now the Merry-Go-Round of old political stories is being spun and the ponies being whipped mercilessly.

You may have noticed that the US networks are all abuzz about this yet again!
And not surprisingly CNN is leading this circus.

Now that some former Whitehouse employee wants to sell his book about the matter. And, just happens to be making inflamatory and unsubstantiated claims about the Whitehouse Staff and the Government. They are only too willing to rehash ALL the falsehoods that were so willfully bandied about and so thoroughly discredited.

Still, after all this time these so called News Reporting agencies refuse to acknowledge or include in their "Latest" reports the fact that the person who disclosed the Name of Valerie Plame as a CIA agent admitted that he did so! His name is Dick Armitage.

In fact, it is recorded that Wilson Himself essentially did it in the process of releasing two fabricated stories in his personal attempt to undermine the reelection efforts of GW Bush and the Republicans. All politically motivated actions by disgruntled government employees out to cause trouble for their former employers and in aid of political opponents to the Republicans and Bush.

Now how many times do you see any of those facts mentioned in connection with the MSM reports you see?

I'll bet that you do not and will not! CNN knows these facts and knows very well that they are salient to the story. Yet they willfully fail to mention in their reports even the existence of any information that runs contrary to their desired theme.

The only way you will find these details is by researching yourself and the likes of CNN know very well that the likelihood of that happening is slim to none.




And so they get to carry on with their incompetent, false and agenda driven version of news reporting.

It is Certainly Not News .

The MSM riding their fake stories .... fake like painted tin horses on the Merry-Go-Round watch them go by time and again until you get vertigo or simply need to walk away and get some fresh air and new scenery.

This will have to do as my camera batteries died and I'm not waiting for the recharge before I drink this bottle ! SO .... With apologies to the Brewmeister ..... I'm going to initiate my own intimate relationship with Nikki...... The Ale That is!

As described on the label she is brown ... a very nice deep amber kind of brown that reminds me of some other very enjoyable delights.
Poured into the big glass from the 600ml bottle there is a rich creamy head that rises to more than an inch and stays around for the long haul with a steady rise of effervescence from the depths of the vessel.

Nikki's aroma is fresh and flowery with a hint of lemon .... not strong but just enough perfume to stimulate the senses ... there's a bit of the bakery in the background too ....she promises to be very special.

With the first taste of her you know there's going to be some very high quality time spent together. The flavours are complex enough to keep you interested and then some.
For me it's malty and meaty like roasted hazelnuts and maybe almonds.... just a slight muskiness ... as you finish the sample you may notice a creamy sensation and a passing touch of bitter and then a pleasant clean finish with a hint of coffee.

For me this is a very fulfilling relationship ....... I'll try to make the most of it!

Remembering!

November 11th 200? - Remember

What do you need to remember?
I have my list. It consists of my family and my friends. It also includes those faces and images from my past that mean tradition to me.
There are the images of the gatherings at our small town Cenotaph Memorial. The monument stood proudly on the main street of our town. It was built at the end of the first world war and was enscribed with the names of our own fallen neighbours. Set in middle of town the park that surrounded the memorial was treed with majestic elms and maples. There was a band stand in the middle of the park that provided shelter for musicians at summer brass concerts.

Mostly I remember the stern instructions from my parents prior to our walk to the memorial each November 11th morning. Be respectfull they said. Show your friends and neighbours that you care about what they have lost and how they feel. Remember that many people gave up their own lives to ensure that you can stand here as a free person. Remember that you live in a country of hope and opportunity and that is so because of the sacrifice of others. Remember that by showing your public respect for the diginity and honour of those sacrifices that diginity and respect is reflected back on you.

I was not there in the horror of war. I did not experience the terror or the blood or the pain. I did not struggle in the filth and cold. But I do remember to respect that someone did.

I hope you will stop today and remain silent and motionless with a thought of respect for these things.

This is a nice lager style of beer that pours clean and clear with a light golden hue and the fragrance of very floral hops. It gives off a bit of citrus aroma as well and tastes very pure.
The hops give a classic bitterness that is stimulating and leaves a pleasantly clean aftertaste.

Three words best describe this Italian creation ... Clean ... Clear ... Fresh...

A very nice experience and a beer that would go well with food of any kind.

I'm hoping this stuff will be on my vendors shelf next summer because it's exactly the kind of beverage that goes well when chilled on ice on a hot day!

For several generations now the American psyche has been getting trampled upon by the post modernist ideology.

It has resulted in a truly schizoid rift and an ever increasing number of perpetual adolescents who are desperate to be coddled and sheltered from the dangers and harsh realities of the world. As the demands for ever more "Nurse Nanny" governance increase so to does the wailing of the weak minded and self important creations of a cotton ball culture whenever they are forced to face the harsh realities of our modern world.

You see this pathological behaviour in the Shrieking and finger wagging and name calling that occurs whenever someone dares to speak harshly or critically of the sacred cows in the PeeCee world or even to demonstrate plain truthfulness and honesty in matters of import.

In many cases all it takes is the perception of some group's collective dignity being called into question to set off the petulant tirades.

Yet these people insist on attacking anyone and anything that actually does protect their sorry asses.

The truly odd thing about this segment of society is how these insecurities manifest themselves.

From public displays of what amounts to organized temper tantrums ( see just about any protest) .... To organizations dedicated to sticking it to "The Man" "The System" "Big Government" ( see ACLU NAACP etc.)

With the US engaged in political and military struggles on so many levels these days and especially in the looming shadow of federal elections next year the shrieking types (see Moonbats) are feeling empowered and ever more justified in their public displays of petulant self indulgence.
What was once considered aberrant behaviour by society (freekshow protests) is becoming or has become common place and seems to be tolerated to a degree which is truly astounding.

The absurdity of some of the issues embraced by the Moonbat culture is even quite comical.
..... although they do tend to take themselves oh so seriously.

Take for instance the current circus of protests around the issue of what is being called torture.

When I was growing up as a pre-teen we played games that were more frightening and dangerous than this thing called water boarding.
Buy me a beer some time and I'll tell you some stories! Let's just say that what passed for entertainment and sport in the 1950's playground would result in plenty of social agencies responding in panic to the "crisis" of child endangerment and calls for all kinds of "action".

That could be the theme for a whole other story though....

Back to Water Boarding .... by the standards of the childsplay that I and my peers engaged in this would be considered a participant sport! IN fact I'd bet that outside of the PeeCee circles of the modern American ... you could set up a waterboard as an activity for the local carnival and charge money to take the ride.

Not so much though for these crybabies ... Code Pink Water Board Protest .... Although if you watch the video you'll see that they are voluntarily doing it to themselves!
I wonder how much they practiced ..... before they took this show to the protest??

This baby pours a beautiful clear golden.... with a little frothy head that dissipates quickly and a body that continues to effervesce lightly.
The nose is all classic fruity hops that I find sort of lemony ...... the flavour is really nice and fresh and the feel is clean on the palate.
I'm hoping to get my hands on some of their Hefeweizen ! :)

I'd recommend this beer for summer thirst quenching and served with snacks like wings, nachos and veggie platters ....... Thanks Darcey !
