Lanie's Log - New Wardens were Worse

It has been 106 days since my capture. While I have complained about my wardens, I must report, the substitute wardens were worse.

The Lady Warden had left very strict instructions to Callie's children to give me space. However, the 10 year old apparently found me irresistible and climbed a chair and got into my face.

This resulted in me being MIA for most of the time the people were gone.

The Man Warden was thrilled to see me come out of the ceiling at 2:30 am Tuesday morning. He was less thrilled I got back up before he could stop me.

Over the next 3 and a bit days the old wardens put my meds back in my food, tried to trick me to go into the live trap to eat (I fell for that once, I am nothing if not smart) and tried to get me out of the ceiling.

Friday morning, I was super hungry and came down for my food. The Man blocked my favourite parkour spot so I was stuck on the washing machine. Lady then chased me out of the laundry room. I have been unhappily not a ceiling cat ever since.

You may wonder how I got in the ceiling, as Styx spent time int here and Lady and Man blocked it off. Well it turns out there was a little hole with a pipe that I am small enough to fit through (Styx and Gris are not). This has since been blocked.

A little dirty but no worse for wear

I am now safely back in captivity.

Editor's note: Immediately after she was down, she allowed us to pet her and she was purring. We have not lost any significant gains with her fortunately. If we had mice, we are also guessing this problem has been solved.

Lanie's Log

Dear log, it has been 86 days since my capture.

I have been a week without my medication and my captures have not noticed a difference, so for now I will not have medication daily. Apparently I will need to continue to have it when I go to to the vet.

I have had an ok week. I got to scratch Lady Warden for the first time, completely deserved as she tried to pick me up and hug me. I am not ready for that. They were minor scratches. She also tried bringing a chair and standing at my height on my windowsill and I just left the room and hid. I am not going to have people in my space like that. I didn't talk to her for a day, but then, 2 mornings later was desperate for pets, so I caved.

I have made some gains apparently. I am coming down when the people are in the room more. The Lady Warden makes a big deal about it.

You can see where my hair has not grown in on my belly yet

What are you staring at Lady Warden?

First time I came down for a drink while Lady Warden was in my cell

Apparently my progress is going well, if slowly. Apparently the Wardens love me and love having me here. I can say, I usually don't hate them (except when they are picking me up or trying to hug me).

Lanie's Log - Day 79

It has been 79 days since my capture.

The wardens have now given me full access to the house, but I don't use it when they are awake. My cell is my safe place.

In spite me not leaving the room during the day, the wardens are pleased with my progress. I continue to love pets (who knew people touching you could be nice), I will come down to eat when they are in the room, and sometimes, I just come down and hang out at a distance.  The wardens have noticed I also don't eat all my food right away. I seem to understand more food will be coming.

The wardens have been experimenting with removing my anxiety meds. They are doing this because they will be away for a few days in January and a substitute guard will be caring for us. This guard will struggle to give me the medication the way it is and the people wanted to see if I needed it and they needed to get it in liquid form, or if I was trusting enough to not have it. Turns out, I am trusting enough to not have it at this time.  This may be a good change.

In other news, Styx comes to visit me. He seems to want to be my friend but can't stop himself from growling at me. I don't react. I know he is not a threat. We will see how this relationship unfolds.

Styx in my windowsill with me

For now, I am sort of glad to not be outside. It has been very, very cold here (-24C/-11F) and I must admit, it is nice to be inside.

Lanie's Log - Some Kind of Freedom

 Readers,

I interrupt this Mischief Monday because apparently Thursday is about resolving, and I wanted to make sure my message got out to the world. It has been 69 days since my capture. In this time, I have discovered I really like to have my head petted and I have started to purr. I will not come down from the windowsill when the wardens are around. I do not trust them enough.

Wishing for freedom in solitary confinement

The wardens have opened the door to my solitary confinement and I now have privileges to the entire prison.

Looking out at the whole prison one of the first times

I do not leave my room when the people are home and up.

I have started to venture out at night.  I have made it upstairs to the main floor a few times.

At the top of the stairs

I have not received the warmest of welcomes, Prisoner 2 has hissed. I think they may have some sort of Tabby Cat gang I am not a member of.  Prisoner 1 just ignores me. I wonder what it will take to be accepted into their gang.

Prison 2, not giving the warmest of welcomes

The wardens are very excited about all of this. I would be happier if they left the front door open.

Lanie's Log - Entering Month 3

I have now been held prisoner for  almost 2 full months. While I continue to resist assimilation, I apparently continue to make progress.

Those who follow the Lady warden on social media will have seen video of me take a few steps in the windowsill to get treat. I will now also eat my dinner in front of them, if they put it on the windowsill. When the boy cat is in the room, he may hiss at me, but I don't hiss back. I did put my teeth on the Lady warden when she offered me licky and I was grumpy, but she just looked right at me, and I didn't bite her. I continue to refuse to come down, even to the top of my tree, when the people are in the room.

Because of my great progress, I have joined my version of the hat tax.  I hiss a lot at all the new stuff Lady puts near me.

I have no idea why Lady warden thinks this is the perfect pillow for me.

Enough - by Jack-O-Lanie

I have been imprisoned for one and a half months now and I have had enough. Last week there was the surgery. This week, I had to go again for a final shot.  This involved the prison warden spending three and a half minutes getting me into the cage as gently as possible so no one needed to go the ER. The trip in the car that was slow because of all the snow. I miss being outside in snow. The vet took me out of the cage, put me on the scale (I am up to 8 lbs, I have almost put on a whole pound). I got the last shot and she checked my belly since I won't wear a cone. My belly is healing well. I did get licky on my paw after all this handling, before being brought home where the prison warden touched me again.

The prison warden says I don't have to go back for a year. I hope to have broken out of here by then.

Styx filling me in

No hissing during our meeting.

While Styx has told me about the regular hat tax, I am not completely immune form my version.

I did not like having this thing held near me

Mischief Monday - by Lanie

It has been 14 days since my imprisonment. I thought that biting people would help me gain my freedom but it hasn't.

I had the perfect hiding place when those people brought food in.  However,  for "safety" reasons, the people dismantled my hiding space, and now when they bring me gruel 2 times a day, I have to see them. Apparently this will help me learn to like being in captivity. I don't know if I am every going to like being in captivity. My people say I have only been here two weeks and it could take a long time. They also say I have a sanctuary not a prison. I disagree.  Lady is about as impatient as i am about all of this.

In my windowsill

For now, I sometimes sing my song in the middle of the night. I eat my food. I use my litter.  I count the days until maybe I will be free.

The Lady says I am stuck in here for now and that she loves me, even if I would like to use my murder mittens on her.

Lanie - please send help

Tuesdays with Tigris - The Rest of The Story

Readers,

First, Lady says to tell you she is sorry she hasn't been around and won't be around because life is very busy the next few weeks. Even though Lady is very busy, she and Man had the stupid idea to help Lanie.

Me and Lady

Refill your coffee or tea and get ready for the rest of the story.

You would have thought any sane people would have just let Lanie be after the skunk incident. But no. The people planned a way to set the trap where they were more sure a skunk couldn't get in. Tuesday morning around 3 am, the Man woke the house up to say we had a Lanie and carried a hissing cat to the prison they had made in a large dog crate in the guest room.

Tuesday, Man tried to get a vet appointment for Lanie, but they could only see her Wednesday. So she was held captive in the crate until Wednesday.

Then the Man, wearing work gloves attempted to get a Lanie in a carrier. Let's say this was very loud, with banging and yelling and ended with Man requiring medical attention. (FYI, one does not need a rabies shot for a cat bite in our area, just tetanus and antibiotics). But before taking care of himself, the Man took Lanie to the vet. There, they would not see her and sent Man home with special food and gaba to help mellow her out.

The only indoor picture Lady has of Lanie - taken when she was a true prisioner..

The next day, after his trip to the ER, Lanie was off to the vet again (the carrier was put in her prison and she happily got in before Man tried). A stoned Lanie cooperated with the exam and the shots and all the things. The cat expert gave the Man some hints to help her (i.e. give her the whole room now, make sure it has some hiding places, spend an hour a day in the room with her, just being waiting for her to come to you etc.).

If you are curious about this cat - she is about 1.5 years old and weighs in at 7lbs.  Lady and Man don't really see her. She is eating the food, drinking the water, using the litter. She sings the song of her people once or twice in the night, but other than that, we don't hear her. The train cam is now in the room so we will see what she does when the people aren't around.

You may be wondering what the next steps for this girl are. For now, until her spay November 24, she will live in our guest room. Lady and Man will spent about an hour a day in the room with her. After the spay and her recovery, Lady and Man will see where we are and what the next reasonable steps are. Given how this has all gone, the next reasonable steps will likely not be that reasonable.

The bottom line is at this moment, they don't know if Lanie can ever be a house cat, or if she will need to be re-released. They are not making this decision now. For now, they are giving her a safe, clean place, meeting her where she is at and seeing what happens. She is currently exempt from hat tax.

Everyone needs a hobby. Apparently this can be one.

Mischief Monday - Ooops, Wrong Friend

 Hi friends, hi friends,

My friend Jack-O-Lanie has been around a lot, I have so much to tell you about her. Sometimes she comes and rubs up against the door when I am standing there. Lady and Man have tried to encourage her to come in, but she is not having anything to do with that. Lady was talking to Callie's people, and they call her Simone, and they have been feeding her for like a year. They have not seen her since she started hanging out with me.  So Lady and Man have kind of stolen their outdoor cat.

It was recently Prime day - look what I got!

Lady looked into a program at the SPCA that let's you borrow a trap, and for a small fee with vet feral cats and you can release them. The SPCA said Lanie doesn't qualify, and wouldn't lend Man a trap so Lady and Man could just do this and take her to our vet. So Lady and Man have ordered a trap. We will keep you posted on how this plays out. Lady and Man have to talk to our vet on Monday about how they may get her in etc. If she can't be an indoor cat, she should at least be spayed and given shots etc.  Then Lady and Man will look at getting her an outdoor enclosure.

The SPCA also told Lady to not feed outdoor cats, because she could start a colony. Lady laughed because she has no problem being a crazy cat Lady.

At any rate, they have had to stop feeding her at the door because the wrong friend found the food.  I was the one who told my people we had the wrong visiter.

We had to let him eat before moving it.

Don't worry, no one was sprayed and Lady refilled and put Lanie's food up high.

That is the mischief going on here.

your pal, Styxy, friend to all
