Welcome

I have started a blog because everybody else is doing it. (I'm going to jump off a bridge like everybody else after this.) I figure this is a great way for me to tell you things without actually talking to you. Feel free to leave comments so I don't always feel like I'm talking to myself.

Thanksgiving

We spent Thanksgiving in Payson with Glenn’s parents at their new house. We haven’t traveled for Thanksgiving in years, if ever. The day before, Wednesday, we had no school. I packed up the van and stuffed all the kids in. Then I dropped Deven off at work and continued on to Payson. Cousins and nieces and nephews and aunts and uncles eventually joined us.

In the evening I realized that while I had packed temple clothes, I hadn’t packed any church clothes for going into the temple. I e-mailed Glenn and then texted Deven to tell Dad to check his email. Glenn was going to pick up Deven from work and come to Payson. But  didn’t check his email before getting Deven, so he had to return home to get church clothes for the girls and me. He and Deven arrived around 11.

For Thanksgiving, family chef Dave did a lot of the cooking. Everything was homemade—rolls, mashed potatoes, stuffing. Grandma Hammer and Nurse Lori came over. Grandma was staying at a hotel until everything was unpacked. We spent the day visiting with lots of relatives.

Temple

Friday morning Deven drove the Saturn from Payson straight to work (in South Salt Lake). Black Friday is a busy day at his work. Friday we spent a lot of time at the Payson Temple, just a minute’s drive away. I did a session in the morning with a sister-in-law.

After some lunch, Glenn and I went to the temple to do sealings. We were joined by several others and were able to get a decent chunk of names done. We then joined the rest of the family in the baptistery where all our kids were. Grandma Hammer came with her nurse to watch. She hasn’t been in the temple in a long time because of age and health, so someone was inspired to ask if she could just watch the kids. Two nephews had just turned 12, so it was their first time. Glenn joined the older nephews for baptizing. Sara was fighting a headache and came just to do confirmations.

The confirmation room was jam-packed, so I waited outside with a few other adult relatives. A temple worker asked Grandma if she wanted to do a couple confirmations, so she did, and she’s never done confirmations for the dead before, ever.

We drove home Saturday late morning. It had snowed overnight, but it was less than a foot. The California relatives were more worried about the snow and waited until Sunday to leave.

Music “Career” Update

I’ve been substituting for band and orchestra at the elementary schools in Granite School District. In October I took over the orchestra at Spring Lane Elementary in Holladay. It’s before school on Mondays and Wednesdays, so it’s crazy early and hard to wake up for. I often end up napping afterward for a couple hours.

It’s also a long commute — the drive one way is the same amount of time as the actual class. But it is a good (if small) class with kids who are talented as well as nice to be around. So learning the violin has paid off.

I’m still not a great violinist. Various bow strokes and articulations are easier now, and I’m getting used to shifting and double stops. I still rely on fingerboard tape, and I’m anxious to improve my tone quality.

I also picked up a new private flute student who lives close by. She is a total beginner in 5th grade. It’s nice to teach an instrument I’m actually good at.
