January re-cap

The New Year has started out great with Preslie getting baptized, Dax's bison project (which has still not been completed due to the insane amount of snow here), and us surviving another month of pure, torturous, freezing COLD. Some other things worth mentioning:

This sweet note between Hunter and Dax written during sacrament meeting today...

Seeing some family..

Matt and Abbey came to see us and that always means a couple of things:
  • Dax cooking good food for everyone
  • chocolate e'clairs
Most of all, seeing the kids play together is cool; I love to see my kids build relationships with their cousins. Mya is at the age that she can really interact with my kids and it is fun! I never had cousins my age growing up so it is important to me that my kids are good buddies with their cousins and also their aunts and uncles.
More time with family...

Preslie and Hunter got all their Valentines ready a month early for their big V-day parties at school. A little excited? Yes!

Everyone has been hounding me this month to make chocolate chip cookies all the time. Mack has been the most relentless. He mentions it 5-6 times a day at least. He loves to make them even more than eat them, I think.

I took the kids to temple square for a short visit to see the big statue of Christ. Sad to be that close to my parents and not have time to drop in. We had fun, though.

And last-- We finally got the last of Preslie's medical bills payed off! YAY!

Good-bye January, Hello month of Love! 28 days 'til my birthday!

scripture bag tutorial

the Preslie Bag & the Tristie Bag
If you requested instructions from me on how to make a scripture bag, read on. Please note that I am not an experienced seamstress and I sometimes make things up as I go, so don't count these instructions as pure fact. It is just my way of doing it and your own creativity gives you license to do the same.
You will need:
  • your scriptures (and any other things you want to make room for in your bag)
  • fabric - 1/2 - 3/4 of a yard depending on size of bag you're making. I used 2 fat quarters for Preslie's bag. I used some old curtains for my bag (perfect because the fabric is heavy). If you are using a regular weight fabric, I recommend getting some interfacing to beef up the thickness of the bag to make it strong and sturdy. If not, for sure make a liner. To make a liner with a contrasting fabric, get 3/8 yard of 2 different kinds of fabric.
  • mat and rotary cutter OR ruler and scissors
  • iron and ironing board

1. Measure your scriptures and any other books you want in your bag and add 1 1/4 inches to each measurement to determine how large to make your pieces. Preslie's scriptures are about 7 1/2 x 2 1/2 x 5 1/4. Adding 1 1/4 inches to each side will give me the following measurements for the Preslie bag: I wanted my Relief Society manual to fit in my bag, so I measured my scriptures together with my manual and then added an extra 1 1/2 inches to all measurements so I would have plenty of room if I needed to carry more papers, a diaper, etc.

If you are going to make a liner for the bag (a fabric piece for the inside- like I did on Preslie's), add 2 inches to the height for the liner pieces only. So the liner measurements for the Preslie bag would look like this:
2. Measure and cut out the pieces. You can make pattern pieces out of paper, pin them to the fabric and then cut. Or use a rotary cutter and ruler. If you are using a regular cut of fabric that has the fold, then it works perfect because you will need 2 of each piece (except for the bottom of the bag, but you can use the extra for the lining or just to double it up for extra strength, which I recommend). Cut fabric for straps by deciding how long you want them and then adding 2 inches to the length. Cut them 4 times the width you want them to be when they're finished. I made Preslie's just handle length and mine shoulder strap length. I cut Preslie's 4 inches wide and 14 inches long. I wanted my straps an inch wide and about 25 inches long so I cut pieces 4 inches wide and 27-28 inches long. Always cut more length than you need, you can always trim off some before you sew the straps on. (Don't look at the ones in the pic, I cut longer ones later which I used.)
3. Decide if you want to add trim or pockets and add those at this point.

Cut trims, pin and sew in the desired location before sewing the bag together. I wanted mine to be funky and eclectic. When adding trims, remember your half inch seam allowances around the sides and bottom and your hem or liner that will be sewn to the top. (The top of my bag was already hemmed --from the curtain I used--so I could sew my flower lace close to the top edge.)

For outside pockets, measure the item you want in the pocket and add enough room for the thickness of the item plus an inch for seams. Iron edges back (toward the wrong side), hem the top edge of the pocket and sew pocket on staying close to the edge... (this must be done before bag is sewn together).

For inside pockets, use the same measurements for the side pattern piece and then press down and hem the top of the pocket piece to the desired height. Then sew the pocket piece to the side piece. This kind of pocket can be sewn to the liner (or the inside of the bag if you are not doing a liner) while you are sewing the bag together OR you can baste it (sew it on using a loose stitch) to the side piece beforehand, either way. I know we haven't started sewing the bag together yet, but the inside pocket will look something like this when it is done:4. Once the trim and/or pockets are in place, we start sewing the bag together. Start with the front panel and right side panel. Place RIGHT sides together and stitch the two pieces together using a 1/2 inch seam allowance (4/8 is the same thing). Press seams flat with the little inside flaps to one side or another, not down the middle.

Then stitch the back panel and the left side panel together. Or the back panel to the right side panel, doesn't matter. Just sew the 4 sides together and press seams flat each time.

5. Sew on the bottom piece. This is tricky but pins are your friend and patience is your friend. Just line up the pieces as best you can and when you approach a corner, stop about a half inch away from the edge and turn the project and sew down the next side. It's ok if it is not perfect (mine wasn't); it's the bottom anyway! You can always pick it out and start again until you get the hang of it, if you want. Once you get the bottom sewn on, it is time to get started on sewing the liner (step 5a) OR hemming the top of your bag (step 5b).

5a. If you are going to be adding a liner in your bag, repeat steps 4 and 5 for the liner. Once you have the liner sewn together, place it inside the bag with wrong sides together (so that all seams from both outside and liner are touching together and not showing). The top of the liner will be longer than the top of the outside bag. That is good. You then want to mark with pins where you are going to fold and press the liner so that it creates a trim around the outside of your bag. You can press it down .25 of and inch and then place it back inside the bag and mark with pins where to press it down again to fold snuggly over the top of the bag. Once you have it pressed, place the liner in the bag and sew around the top to attach the liner to the bag. Sew close the the edge of the liner fabric.
5b. If you are going to hem the top (and not add a liner), turn bag right side in, and fold and press raw edges of the top of the bag .25" all the way around. Then fold and press the edge down another .5" or .75" all the way around. Stitch around it close to the edge. Turn right side out and admire...
Almost done, and looking good!

6. For the straps or handles, fold strap pieces down the middle and press.

Unfold and then fold one side into the middle so it almost touches the crease you just made. Press.
Fold the other side toward the middle, just like you did, and press.
Now fold entire strap down the middle along the first crease you made, making sure the two side flaps are folded in together. Stitch down both sides of the strap. Repeat all of step 6 for the second strap and you'll have 2 that look something like this:
7. Fold raw ends of straps under about 1 inch and press. Then pin the straps to the outside or inside of the bag (based on your preference). Make sure they are not twisted. Stitch them on securely like in the picture below...

or you can sew them onto the inside of the bag like this:

Now, you are done!

Enjoy,
Tristie

taking time for kids

The kids have been bringing home papers for weeks about a poetry reciting contest at school. I kept meaning to find a poem for Preslie and Hunter to memorize and time kept eluding me. This past Monday, Preslie comes home and says, "Hey Mom, I told my teacher I would do the poetry contest so can you find me a poem that I can bring tomorrow?" The day before something is due is never an opportune time to do it but.. I did find her one (with a grumpy, bad attitude because I of course had a bunch of other stuff I was in the middle of). She brilliantly memorized the 16 line poem in about 5 minutes (and Hunter and Mack almost had it down, too) and performed it for her class the next day. Each teacher was to choose the 3 best kids from their class to perform their poems for their parents. This morning I realized that today was that day and asked Preslie if she had been chosen to recite hers and if I needed to come. She said she didn't know and I sent her off to school. A few minutes later, she calls from school and says she is going to be in the contest with the other 2nd graders and I need to come.

I go and am waiting for her grade to come to the gym, and trying to distract Mack from running through the school, I was showing him pictures on my camera.. which I realized were ALL of him. He has just been so darn cute lately! And also really naughty taking off his diaper whenever he poops; I've been scrubbing carpet every day. He also finds the most creative (messy) ways to eat and drink. It is so naughty but we all laugh 'cause we can't help it! This face has magic powers over me...

He is so darling to watch play in the snow. He loves to dig but mostly just eats it. Doesn't matter if it's on the road or sidewalk, gravelly or clean or in the buffalo chute, he'll eat it.

I was showing Mack all these cute pics of himself and he would not hold still and kept screaming, "Help! Help! Help me!" as I was trying to contain him and quiet him so the parents could hear their darlings recite poems. There were about 19 kids so it took a bit for them all to get a turn and for the judges to make their marks after each child.

Preslie went and I could tell that she was nervous but she did really well and I was proud that she still had it memorized and spoke clearly.

Well, she won FIRST PLACE!

The look on her face was so priceless; she was shocked! Then she could not stop beaming. I just wanted to run up there and hug her guts out. It was so fun.

She is now invited to go to the district competition next week. I learned a lot of Mom lessons this week like- taking time to help your kids try something new and fun pays off. And- fighting a two-year-old to sit and be quiet can have its rewards, and mostly I need to have a happy attitude when it comes to helping my kids. After all, they are why I chose to be a Mom. So I might as well do it with smile!

here buffy, buffy..

Dax invited us to go to work with him to check out his current project: the Bison Transplant! Just like last winter, he organized and carried out a project to trap and move 40 bison from the Henry Mountains, to Antelope Island for disease testing, then to their new home in the Book Cliffs. We watched the bison up close while they waited in the chutes for their radio collars and shots. They were not happy to be penned up. They were kicking and thrashing around against the metal walls. It made me a little nervous to be that close to the wild beasts. The kids ate it up.

It is always fun to see Dax at work because he knows what he's doing and has a good time doing it. And as always, he was ultra-smooth when KSL showed up for an interview. Even though he has been sick all week, it didn't stop him from being a superstar employee, husband, and dad!

good things

I was craving homemade chicken noodle soup (with homemade noodles even...my MIL's recipe- awesome), so Thursday I made a huge pot. With my husband gone working many many hours, I knew I'd never eat it all so I suddenly got a brilliant idea to invite some girls over for lunch the next day. I was in need of some fun because I live on the coldest part of the planet and I don't think being cold for this long and not being able to go outside or have the sun shine on you is healthy. And single digit temps really limit what you can do for fun outdoors.

Three girls came over to eat soup with me Friday and I think it boosted everyone's spirits. JayeCee, Macy, and Leslie came with all or part of their kids and we had so much fun chatting that after a while I had to make everyone sit down and start eating! We shared our funny Mom stories; it is always good to hear that another Mother has gone through the same thing you have. Good therapy. And a good way to get me to finally clean my poor house a bit because when people come into a new house, they always want a tour.

After everyone left, I had the best feeling and was a happy and motivated Mom the rest of the day. Wow, it is amazing what taking a little time for myself will do! (Note to self: do that more often.)

Today (Saturday) is my niece, Mya's 1st birthday and we unfortunately could not travel over to her party but I did mail her a dress that I made for her. I should have tied the back ties so it would be cinched cuter at the waist for the pic, but you get the idea.

Then miraculously, Preslie and Hunter went to a friend's to watch a movie while Mack was napping and I was able to make Preslie a bag for the new scriptures she got for her b-day. I made pockets for her pictures of Jesus and the scripture markers her aunt and uncle gave her.
I have been having a lot of fun sewing lately. I have a lot of undone projects and a few I want to start.

My weekend is shaping up nicely, and Dax just called this evening and he is coming home tonight instead of tomorrow night! Lucky me!

right now

MACK is always cracking us up with his 2-year-old ideas. We got a huge kick out of him during December when he imitated Santa. He has a ton of "friends" that sleep in his crib with him. He will do just about anything if I pretend one of his stuffed animals is telling him to do it. He still gets into things, but is starting to slow his pace a bit. This month, he hit a milestone and finally enjoys watching movies. And that is all he's wanted to do ever since. After 2 days straight of Sid the Science Kid, I quickly took that DVD back to the library... although, with his lisp, he says it really cute. Whenever he's within arms reach of me, he has a handful of my hair and is tickling his face and ears with it. I feel bad for anyone who doesn't have a toddler in their house. Everything (prayers, meals, family home evening, baths, laundry) is more fun with a 2-year-old!

PRESLIE can be found reading Bailey School Kids books, organizing her eraser collection, or laying out her clothes for school the next day. She knows just how to push everyone's buttons and doesn't hold back in doing so. She is awesome to entertain Mack when I need a shower or when I can't handle him tickling his face with my hair anyMORE. She read everyday in December for 15 minutes or more to earn a Pizza Hut personal pan pizza. (I think I would have just paid the 4 bucks) It is weird, because she doesn't even like pizza. At least that is what she tells us whenever we make it at home. She also doesn't like to get her hair fixed. She is totally self-motivated in school and comes home and gets right on her homework. This is a mother's dream come true.
When HUNTER says, "Mom, check this out!" I always look because you'd better believe it is going to be awesome. It is pure entertainment to watch him dance because he is completely uninhibited. I really really want to find a boys' hip hop class and enroll him. He really has moves! This kid is starting to eat a ton; he is constantly in the pantry with his hand in a box of cereal and can out-eat me any day of the week. Most of his time is spent in his own little world thinking so intently about Hunter stuff that he doesn't see or hear the rest of the world going on around him. He loves movies, transformers, bakugans, and recently got introduced to the world of Star Wars by his dad.
DAX earns the family VIP award for being the man in every aspect of life. When he is not hard at work pleasing the public or helping the state's wildlife, he is gathering and cutting wood, making fires to keep me warm, down on the floor wrestling the kids, or building the most awesome lego creations you ever saw. I love that he enjoys cooking and when he has time, he plans and cooks many of our dinners. He gets up some Sunday mornings and prepares a roast in the crock pot so we can have a yummy meal when we get home from church. I truly could not run this family and home without him. He is a great husband and a super dad. And keeps all of us laughing with his out-of-no-where (and sometimes messed up) humor.
And as for me... I have no pictures of myself because I am the one behind the camera! And nothing really exciting to report.. just the usual. I have basically been on survival mode just keeping the house running.. keeping people fed, clothed, bathed, and getting people where they need to be. I lost Dax as my Den leader assistant but I think he will be great in Young Mens. I finally got Christmas put away today, Jan 12. But I'm not taking down all the Christmas cards yet. For fun, I sewed a dress for my niece last week.

I better go hang out with my husband!
Have a great day!

repurpose: shorts and an old t-shirt

Let's make a cute little cotton play skirt, shall we?

While cleaning out my kids' closets I found these shorts that are too short for Preslie now..

And while organizing my storage room boxes I came across this enormous old, ugly t-shirt that was screaming "D.I." or "cleaning rags" ...

So I decided to put both to good use.
First, I cut the bottom off the shorts and threw away the crotch thingy. This would be the waistband of the skirt.

Then I cut the bottom off the t-shirt so I could use it as the bottom of the skirt and use the hem already there! I used a ruler to make my cut somewhat even. I cut off about 6 or 7 inches all the way across. I wasn't too precise because it is just a play skirt and I wasn't sure if this was going to work or not anyway...

Next, I adjusted the length on my sewing machine to the highest number so it would sew a really loose stitch (more room between each stitch) and sewed a .5" seam around the top of my t-shirt strip. Then I pulled the threads on the outside and slid the fabric along the inside thread to gather the fabric until it was the same size around as the bottom of shorts opening.

Putting right sides together, I pinned the two pieces together making sure that the outside seams of the shorts and the outside seams of the t-shirt matched up on the sides. Then I sewed another .5" seam around to join the two pieces (adjusting my length back to a normal stitch, not the loose one I had it on earlier)

AND...

Is anyone else thinking what I'm thinking? Gathering a whole bunch of bright colored t-shirts and making a funky multi-tiered skirt? I thought so.
