Our Christmas (and a partridge in a pear tree)

In 2009 our Christmas memories...
12 minute sledding
11 holiday pounds
10 days off school
9 Nativity figures
8-year-old birthday
7 sword fights
6 dozen cookies
5 o'clock: neighbors sing!
4 degrees outside
3 pairs of jammies
2 Santa spy-ers
and some nose hair trimmers for my hubby!

Christmas Eve was spent with Preslie opening her gifts and us hanging out at home.

In the evening, we joined our neighbors in the street by the fire side singing carols and drinking hot chocolate. What a fun tradition.

After attempting to act out the Nativity from the Bible, it was time for bed.

Preslie and Hunter slept on the couch Christmas Eve in hopes to catch Santa. Christmas morning, I heard them talking so I went in and they said, "He didn't come! We stayed up ALL night and we didn't see him! Maybe we were too bad." I pointed to the pile of presents and bulging stockings and they squealed and jumped out of bed.

In my family growing up, we savored the present opening time on Christmas morning. One person would open a gift and we would all watch and get excited for them. After big hugs exchanged by the gift giver and receiver, the next person would open something, and so on. My kids could not be restrained and it turned into kind of an organized free-for-all. Oh well, I guess they had waited a long time for this day!

Later that afternoon, I wanted to try out my new sled from Santa! It was so fun! We went to the park a block away that has some great hills. Mack is so fun; he was braver than his big bro and sis. Dax sent him down the hill by himself (laying down, so he couldn't fall).

rock ON!

We had a crowd of rock stars show up today to PAR-TAY. Ten little girls (ok, 9 little girls and one big girl that thought she was little) tore up the stage and the dance floor to the tunes of DJ Daddy Dax. First, we painted and decorated our cardboard guitars. Then the girls took turns performing their favorite songs. Some girls liked watching better.. not everyone loves the spotlight (and some like it a little too much), but I think all had a fun time. Here are all the girls striking a pose..

Here they are rocking out and having fun!

Dax and I love Sierra's jumping picture so much! (in the collage above, bottom left)

Huge Surprise

All my siblings, their spouses and kids, my Aunt Sharon and my cousin Mike orchestrated a huge surprise for my parents' 40th anniversary. I don't know how that many people were able to keep the secret AND all fly in/drive and meet at the designated time before my parents got there but we pulled it off!

When my parents showed up for church, we were all there waiting in the foyer! It was so fun to see their faces! When my Mom first pulled into the church in her wheel chair she looked at my nephew and said, "Oh my gosh, that kid looks just like Wyatt!" Then she saw everyone and her face was priceless. It was fun for us to reunite with each other, too. Tisha, Jason, and their 6 kids came from Idaho, Trina, Jason and their 2 girls flew from Oregon, Matt and Natalie and Wyatt flew in from Oregon, Dax and I brought our family and my West Jordan brothers were of course there- Lance and Tyrel. Trent lives with my parents and he gets tons of credit for not letting my parents leave for church until all of us had arrived in the foyer. Thank goodness for text messaging!

Here are a couple pics of the surprised Mom and Dad!

We went to Sacrament Meeting with my parents and then to their home for a gourmet meal cooked by my cousin Mike and wife Kristi and girls and my Aunt Sharon. It was the most delicious coconut and rosemary crusted smoked pork loin drizzled in a yummy dark red sauce, mashed potatoes and gravy, rolls, steamed veggies, green salad, and two huge sheet cakes to celebrate the occasion.

It was a wonderful time to be together and celebrate my parents' life together. We all love and admire them and I think they had the best anniversary ever!

Tyrel and I had a huge laugh about the above pic. Look closer and see who popped in for the shot. Tyrel is such a crack up!

Here is Chef Mike and his family, Aunt Sharon, and Mom and Dad.

Cannot believe my nieces are so grown up.

Love my sisters! It is times like these that we miss Tiphanie dearly.

Uncle Jason is a huge hit with the 2-year-olds.

My brother Matt and his beautiful family..

My kids just love playing with their cousins! I wish we were much closer to them all.

big week

The huge thing that went down this week was Dax's thesis defense at USU in Logan. He did a great job! (I didn't go, but he is a good speaker/presenter, so I know he did well.) There is still a lot to be done before he can kiss his Master's work goodbye. We can't wait for it to be a wonderful, distant memory!

While Dax was stressing about that, the kids and I had big fun making the coolest ornaments ever at pack meeting. They are so much fun! This is something the kids can do! Check it out.

Per ornament, you need:
pipe cleaner of your color choice, cut into 3 inch lengths
3 cups boiling water
9 Tbsp borax (found in the laundry detergent aisle)
wide mouth jar
piece of a skewer or straight stick
thread

1. shape the pipe cleaners into desired shapes. tie one end of a piece of thread to the shape and the other end of the thread to a skewer. make sure the thread's length will allow the ornament to be suspended in the jar, not touching the bottom of the jar.
2. boil water (adult part of the activity) and dump it into a wide mouth canning jar. add borax and stir. lower the ornament (attached to the string and skewer) into the jar and rest the skewer over the top of the mouth of the jar.
3. wait and watch. as the water cools, crystals will start to form on the ornaments. It takes about 3-4 hours to finish forming the crystals. You can watch a Christmas movie or eat dinner while you wait! Or do them before bed and wake up to your beauties!
4. once your ornament is all chunky with crystals, lift it out of the water and set it on a towel to dry.

SO COOL!

We did a few non-traditional colors and shapes, but I think just a good old white snowflake or red or green star shape would be pretty. Also, you could do bigger ones if you used a bigger bowl or vase to drop the ornament in. Just make sure you add 3 Tbsp of borax for every cup of water you use.

Oh, and the jars will collect crystals on the bottom that harden like mad. It comes off in the dishwasher.

On his way home from Logan, Daxter brought us a big, tall Christmas tree. The kids just love decorating it. We needed quite a few more lights than in previous years.

Preslie's singing club from school performed at the bank this week. I don't know what is wrong with me, but I got so choked up listening to their sweet voices! Christmas songs have really been hitting me like that for the past couple of years. I love this season!

After the singing, we ran to the ward party with 2 dozen gingerbread cookies in all shapes. Fun fun!

Other things I've been up to... patching jeans! I buy my kids' clothes big, so before they grow out of them, their pants all get trashed. I found a way to sneak some more use out of them. They are Preslie's favorite now! I even patched a pair of my favorite old jeans. I don't like holes, but I can live with some cute patches! The trick is to use a seam ripper on the outside seam of the leg so you have enough room to maneuver the sewing machine. Once the patch is sewn on, stitch the leg closed again.

Yesterday, Mack shoved a little Lego flag pole into his ear canal and instantly regretted that decision. I love living 2 doors away from a pediatrician. I took him over to his house for a look and he said he didn't puncture his ear drum, but did scrape up the ear canal. We will be picking up some antibiotic drops tomorrow to prevent infection while it heals.

And this morning, we woke up to SNOW! Time to buy a snow shovel. One of the things you never think about buying 'til you have your own house.
After church, the kids got their snow clothes on and had so much fun. This is Mack's first winter that he can actually walk in the snow. He loaded up his sand pail with snow and shoveled it into his mouth. Mmm, gritty!

givingTHANKS

A fun holiday with Dax's family in the South of Utah. The food was to drool over. I am mostly a turkey and mashed potatoes girl, but even the side dishes-- which never grab my attention-- totally stood their ground. Except the rolls. Something weird happened and they were burnt on the outside and dough in the middle. I felt a little guilty making the grocery store be open so we could buy some more. But not enough to skip the rolls on Thanksgiving.

Other highlights from the weekend:
  • visiting old friends we haven't seen in 5-6 years
  • hanging out with Matt and Abbey. Love those guys.
  • seeing The Blind Side with my husband and Matt and Abbey. Abbey sneaked a soda in the theater and decided to crack open the can as soon as everyone got way quiet. I am still laughing.
  • Seeing Mya's army crawl
  • shopping at 4am with Abbey on Friday morning
  • laughing at all the other psychos out that early. Never seen people so eager to get into Target to spend their money. I have come to think it is not really the deals that draw people, it is the hype. I just went for the girl time with Abbey. Oh, and the $4 Elf DVD.
  • getting family pictures crossed off the list for another 2 years. They turned out good!

Thanks to Dax's folks for a great time!

THE SEASON!

The most wonderful time of the year is here. I can already feel the excitement in the air starting to build. *sigh* I love it.

We had a fun-filled holiday-themed weekend.

THURSDAY: We had a Pre-Thanksgiving dinner party with friends from Dax's work and their wives. So fun. So yummy. We had a great time eating and visiting. The kids played and we only checked on them when we heard screaming or crying. We also kept the kids up way past their bedtimes. Awesome parents.

FRIDAY: I put up Christmas lights on our house for the first time! I had no idea what I was doing, and it must have shown because my neighbor came over and helped me. I am so glad he did! It was so much faster with help. And the weather was perfect!

SATURDAY: We took the kids to the community center to see Santa and Mrs. Claus. I was excited to see what Mack would do. He talked big but when the moment of truth arrived...

Preslie told Santa she wanted a surprise this year.

Hunter went and hid when it was our turn with Santa.
