Rolling Over

Simon rolled over for the first time on Christmas Eve at just three-weeks old. We are so proud of our strong little guy. He'll be walking in no time.

Our New Addition

Simon Kevin Paulsen was born to Ami and Jacob on December 2, 2007 at 1:06 p.m. in Orem, Utah. He weighed 7lb 2.5 oz , was 19.5 inches long and had a head full of dark hair! Simon gets his first name from the apostle Simon Peter in the New Testament and his middle name from his Grandpa Heyborne. We are so excited Simon came to join our family just in time for Christmas.

Our Story

As our first blog entry, I thought it would be fitting to tell the story of how our little family came to be. Jacob and I met at Rock Springs High School at the age of 15. Our first date was a formal school dance (Winter Ball) our junior year. We were close friends throughout high school and continued to go on creative dates. In 2002, Jacob left to serve an LDS mission in Joao Pessoa, Brazil and I continued my education at BYU-Idaho. We wrote letters throughout Jacob's mission, maintaining that close friendship. When Jacob returned home in 2004, we picked up our friendship where we had left off. As I was one of Jacob's few unmarried pre-mission friends, we began to talk more and more. One night, after a four-hour phone conversation, it hit me. "Oh my goodness! I think I like this boy." Hoping things would progress on their own, I continued to talk to Jacob almost daily. After a week or so I got impatient and decided to take matters into my own hands. I called Jacob and said something to the effect of "I like you. Let me know whether or not you feel the same way so we can either date or I can move on." I was horrified. I'd never done anything like that before. Apparently Jacob was horrified as well because he was silent. This part of the story is where Jacob and I differ in our versions. I was under the impression he gave me the "let's be friends" speech and he believes he told me he needed time to process his thoughts. The point is; we didn't exactly declare our undying love for each other at that time. I thought we may never talk again so I was surprised when he called me two days later and told me he liked me too. Things couldn't happen immediately because Jacob was in Provo, UT and I was still in Rexburg, ID. We decided to meet in Salt Lake City that weekend for a date. Things began to progress quickly and Jacob and I spent every weekend together, alternating driving to each other. About two months later (March 11), Jacob came to Rexburg and proposed; recreating our best memories and giving me his grandma's ring. It was a fairy-tale night. Right before Jacob and I started dating, he signed a contract to sell Dish Network in Iowa for the summer, so we set the date for August 26 (less than a week after Jacob returned from Iowa). Jacob and I were married August 26, 2005 in the Manti Utah Temple. Here we are, two and a half years later with our first child. In high school, if you'd told either of us we'd end up married, we would have thought you were crazy. I guess the moral of the story is; be nice to the person you sit next to in Seminary.
