Aunt Bobbe

In the words of Matt:

She hated having her picture taken.
She loved her Cherry Coke.
If you brought her chocolate, it had to be dark.
She taught me how to stay in my lane when driving on a curve.
She remembered every birthday.
She spoiled my cat with canned cat food.
She loved making children happy.
Farewell, Aunt Bobbe.  I know you were greeted by a loving and anxious mama and papa.
I'll see you when my own journey is through.

This past October, Bobbe became very ill and admitted herself into a hospital.  They found out she had breast cancer which had spread to her lungs and bones.  Her health and spirits waned as time went on and early in the morning of Friday, January 13, Bobbe passed away of a heart attack.  Her funeral was the following Thursday, and she was buried in Highland cemetery.

This woman loved to give.  I keep finding things around our house that she gave us:  The embroidered bath towels for our wedding, the Kraft Food magazine subscription for my birthdays, the cross-stitched Thomas the Train blanket on Gavin's bed, pretty much all the bath toys in the tub, the winter hats she knitted, the penguin Christmas card she sent, the crocheted wash cloths, etc. etc...

And as I've come across each item, a memory of her came along with it.  Bobbe's life wasn't all that easy.  Perhaps now she can rest from her sorrows for a bit and feel the love of her parents and her Heavenly Father more fully.  We'll see you again, Bobbe!

Snowshoes

The weekend after my birthday, Nanette took me up Big Cottonwood Canyon to the Nordic Track at Brighton Ski Resort to snowshoe.  The scenery was beautiful, the company delightful, and good news: my extremities stayed relatively warm!  ;)  (Photo credit:  Nanette!)

(She's really a snow angel.)

A Little Minnie Birthday

For Laynie's 2nd birthday, Grandma/pa Anderson came up for dinner and dessert.
We set the table,

made some cupcakes,

grilled the "hot-diggity-dogs,"

and made "Minnie's bows 'n' cheese."

The little mouse was all smiles.

Right after blowing out the candle.

She thought the candle was candy.

Present time!

Grandma/pa gave her an Elsa microphone

and Elsa dress.

Matt and I gave her a mini trampoline.

Gavin's turn!

Laynie said thank you by giving grandma/pa a nice massage.

2 and 4 3/4

They say, "time stands still for no one."  But could it maybe slow down a bit for me?!  My heart is happy and hurt at the same time as I see these kids grow.  Happy because I love being their Momma.  Hurt because I know I'm going to miss these years when they are over.

Today Laynie turned two.  And in 3 months, Gavin will be 5.

A Tender Kiss

Oh how I love them.

Alayna's 2 Year Stats:
Height: 32" (6 %tile)
Weight: 24.4 lbs (38 %tile)
Head Circumference: 18" (15 %tile)

Inspecting the toe jam between her toes.  (She's obsessed with this.)

"Hey Laynie!  Make a funny face!"  (And this is what I got.)

Dancing

Peek-a-boo!

Alayna means beautiful.

Gavin means brave knight/warrior.

Hip, hip, hooray!  I'm 2 today!

"Hey Gavin!  Come here so I can get a few more pictures of you!"
(He gave me this.)

(And this.)

(And this.)

(And this.)

I'm 37... Say, what?!?

So at age 27, I freaked out because 30 seemed right around the corner.  37 had me feeling the same way.  Will I really be 40 in 3 short years?  Yup.
Matt surprised me by taking the day off work.  Had I known this, I would have showered the night before to look half decent for my first picture at age 37.  Wink, wink.  (I know I look a bit scary, but I think only about 3 people read this blog anyway...)
Wool socks, mini bread pans, and a Maurices gift card also surprised me.  (Thanks, Babe!)

We went to Red Lobster for lunch.  I had never been to this restaurant before.  I had shrimp salad and lobster bisque.  Then they brought me ice cream for dessert.

It was a wonderful day!  Watch out 40, here I come!

Same-day Surgery

On January 4th, we went to Primary Children's Medical Center to have Laynie's palatal prosthesis exchanged.  (The retainer in her mouth had to be unscrewed, and a new one had to be molded and put in.)  I had in my mind that this would be a relatively "easy" surgery because it wasn't an invasive surgery and she'd be in little to no discomfort afterward.  However, it proved to be quite difficult in other ways I hadn't anticipated.

We checked in,

tried to distract a very tired and hungry toddler, watched them give her Versed (a drug to keep her mellow before going into surgery, then handed her off to the anesthesiologist and watched the operating room doors close.  I didn't think how scared Laynie probably was - in a bright room with complete strangers all in blue scrubs, masks, etc. where they had to lay her down on a table.

After the surgery, Laynie came to, and she was a BEAST!  She arched her back, kicked, hit, screamed, etc.  They gave her a drug to reverse the effects of the Versed (sometimes it can make kids come out of anesthesia like this.), but it didn't work.  Then they gave her a calming drug (the same one Price ODed on and died - not sure of the name.)  It didn't even work so they had to give her a second dose.

Then this.

They took us to another room to let that drug wear off and a few minutes after "coming to" Laynie said, "Let's get outta here."  So we left, picked up Gavin from a day of playing with his best friend, Brock, and came home.  Brock's mom sent us home with a meal (bless her soul), and Laynie went straight to the couch with the bag of cookies that came with it.

We didn't realize this until the middle of that night, but Laynie was traumatized from it all.  She wouldn't go to sleep or even lay down.  We had to sleep upright holding her for the next 2 nights with repeated waking ups filled with screaming, kicking, and thrashing about.  It gradually got better.  She only woke up a 2 times on nights 3-5 and 1 time during nights 6-7.  Then on night 8 (which was last night, she slept through the night uninterrupted.

Matt and I had never seen her behave in such a way.  It was terrifying.  But time heals all.  Hopefully we can prepare her a little better for her next surgeries in November and December of this year.  She'll be more verbal by then and understand things better.  Hopefully we won't have to go through this again...

Anderson Family Update 2016

As this year comes to an end, we hope your year has been great and full of enriching experiences. This past year has been wonderful and wild for our little family. It has been full of change, stress, laughs, and a lot blessings. Here is what we have been up to:

Matt continues to work for the LDS Church where he has been working steadily towards a redesign of the Media Library on LDS.org as well as preparing for an app version of the website that should be available very soon. He has enjoyed working with his team and moving the work of the Lord forward. He turned 33 again (thought he did last year, so it was a pleasant surprise to do it again this year). He’s mostly just loved playing with our kids and laughing at the cute things they say.

Cindy has had a wonderful year. She was recently released from the Primary presidency and called to be the Ward Choir director.  She also illustrated a children’s book written by a sister in our ward. It is called Tyronna and the Dinosaur Ball. It turned out really cute, and she had a great time putting it together. She has also picked up photography as a hobby and has taken some great photos of our family. Aside from honing her artistic abilities, she has been busy making sure Gavin and Alayna turn out to be awesome little people, which she is doing quite well.

Gavin has had a busy year. He started attending an online preschool and is becoming quite the little reader. He’s also enjoyed several activities like music lessons with Kidz in Tune, Balls of Fun with the city recreation program, and swimming lessons with dad. He has started to get into playing games and especially enjoys building things with Legos. He is becoming quite the little artist and loves to write notes to his mom and dad. He loves playing cars with his best buddy, Brock. Gavin is always go, go, going and always looking for the next fun thing to do.

Alayna has had a nice surgery free year. She spent a good part of the year obsessed with minions, but has moved on to a new show called Kate and Mim Mim. She has a little stuffed Koala that she takes everywhere (now accompanied by a stuffed Mim Mim) that she loves to cuddle and take care of. She has worked hard this year to grow her hair out and loves putting “pretties” in it. She’s almost got all her teeth and is excited for teething to be done (as are we all). We’ve discovered that she has the spiritual gift of gratitude as she gives the sincerest thank yous you will ever hear.

Thank you for your love and friendship over the years!  We love you, and wish you all the best in 2017.

Love,
The Andersons

Christmas Break

We had a nice Christmas break.  Matt had a few days off.  The kids played with their presents, watched movies, and stayed in their pjs for most of the day.  Matt shoveled snow, and I put Christmas away.
Candy surrounded us!  so much so, that Laynie decided it would taste good in a sandwich - wrappers and all.  (She has a major sweet tooth.)

Grandma Sorensen came up for a visit.  Gavin adores her and told me that she's his favorite "cousin" on the Sorensen side.

Then we traveled to Gunnison with Grandma while Daddy stayed in Woods Cross and worked.

I shared a bed with Laynie.  Don't let her cuteness fool you... she's an obnoxious snorer! (Cleft related, I'm sure.)

This was a little Nativity Grandma made out of candy.  I thought it was so cute and wanted to make one for next year so I snapped a picture.

Matt drove down to Gunnison on Saturday evening after Snow Day and we all attended church there the next day then traveled home.

Kinda sad that Christmas is over.  Decorations are down.  Tree boxed up.  Wreath packed away...  Only 347 days 'til Christmas of 2017, and I can't wait!

Sorensen Family Snow Day

On New Year's Eve day, we went to the cabin for our annual Snow Day.  My Raynaud's Disease has been pretty bad this season, so I opted to stay inside the cabin for most of the day, as did Laynie.  But Gavin thoroughly enjoyed himself out and about snowmobiling, sledding and being pulled on a sled by a snowmobile.

Brian's family had stayed over the night before so the cabin was toasty warm when we got there.  Tyler's family came up shortly after us.  Matt and Carl had to work so they along with Danny and kids unfortunately didn't make it till the end when we all decided to go home.

Gavin and Laynie on Grandpa's snowmobile - getting ready to sled on in to the cabin.

Our little cabin in the woods.

Gavin's favorite activity.  The kids took turns riding on the sled with skis.

The bunkhouse.  I hadn't been here since it was built.

Laynie and Grandpa.  Laynie got quite cold.  Future Raynaud's victim, perhaps??

Pit stop!

Bye, bye!  Until next year!
