Some asshat I’ve never heard of created a api with a bunch of hidden blacklists of instances and users. I wasn’t in it and I’m kinda disappointed like many on lemmy. Seems like being on this dipshits shit lists is a nice place to be.

Jesus christ, even in a decentralized space people are trying to censor things for others without their knowledge.

In a place where most users showed from reddit, because we were sick of censorship no less.

This is egregious. A total breach of trust for new users.

An instance ban or mod action is one thing but hitting the API is just evil.

Hidden is a strong word; it’s a file named as such, in plain text, with a GUI button to disable it, and has a bunch of humor throughout. I’m not really sure what the big deal about it is honestly, I think it’s hilarious and harmless

Edit: apparently I’m totally wrong and the version I saw was a decade fork, maybe? Not entirely sure but I’m sorry for spreading misinformation

not in plain text, it was base64+gzip encoded at the source url to thwart discovery

very not harmless, hidden political censorship is not harmless

and the dev is forcing it on server admins “users can disable the blocklist (if admins allow it), but there will be no server config option to have “toxic mode” (no blocklist mode) on by default”
