Possibly the best onion article ever, because shortly after, Gillette actually released the Mach 5:

Couldn’t agree more. Far cheaper, easier to clean, blade lasts longer (with proper care), doesn’t tug if you have thicker hair…

I tried it years ago and never looked back.

The more blades, the deeper the cut. The first blade pulls the hair up, causing the next blade to cut the hair below the skin level. Causing irritation and ingrown hairs.

Plastic cartridges need multiple blades, though, cause they can’t hold the blades in enough tension to get a good cut otherwise.

Yeah one sharp blade is 100x better than 5 dull ones. Plus a nice lather and aftershave just makes me feel great. I still use a mach 3 for my undercarriage when I’m showering, but I love my safety razors and weekly shavette clean cut.

If you’re looking into safety razors, get a starter pack with an assortment of blades. I was getting one and I thought it couldn’t possibly matter, because for God’s sake, it’s a sharp piece of metal, how could it? And then I tried a few different brands from the assortment pack, and sure enough one of them worked much better for my face than others (it was Shark, btw).

I can easily believe that for some people, one brand of blade is no good, while another is perfect, and I’d hate to think that someone tried shaving with the wrong kind and got turned off the whole project from that one wrong sample.

I did that and landed on feather I think they are called? Great advice though, I remember being really surprised by the difference in cut between brands and all of the included blades were highly rated so I also figure it must make a difference with facial structure and hair makeup of the individuals more than I expected. All the blades worked fine but the one brand was just so much better.

Yeah it was maybe 30$ for a set of wet shaving stuff, blades, brush, bowl, and a 12 pack of arko sticks (I inherited the razor handle). Haven’t spent anything on shaving since. If I’d been using Gillette this whole time it’d probably have been hundreds of dollars.

Just wanted to note there was no learning I had to do with the one I bought. I shave exactly like I used to with the multi blades. And it wasn’t fancy or anything, just picked the cheapest one off amazon or whatever.

I only say this because I thought about switching for a long time before I did because the shaving posts on reddit made it seem like an almost mystical process with a high skill floor, but I shouldn’t have been worried

For learning, a word of caution to others: your facial hair and skin sensitivity is going to impact this. If you’ve always been shaving with a mechanical or just throw the Gillette around without caring much and expect a safety razor to act the same way, you might be in for a nasty surprise.

Learning isn’t hard for this, though. Just pay attention to a YouTube video or 2 and you should be good to go.

If it must be European branded, then you can get a Merkur or Muhle. Otherwise, the Parker 91R is considered the entry-level 3 piece razor by many. The Merkur 23c or the Muhle Neo are good EU-made razors for beginners. If you are reluctant to spend quite so much to see if you like double-edge razors, then look for Lord L6 or L7 razors. They are known to be quite mild and inexpensive. I believe they are made in Egypt. But the materials aren’t quite up to Merkur or Muhle standards. After that, it’s a matter of buying a few sample packs of blades to see which is best for your face and razor.

Get a nice gel based shaving cream, and you might be done with ever buying razors again. But it is likely you will get lather curious and want to try a brush and soap at some point.

And if you need more help and are still confused, I recommend this website. You don’t need to sign up if you don’t want, but they are friendly, knowledgeable, and eager to help newcomers figure shaving out.

I 3d printed my safety razor handle: https://www.printables.com/model/591133-tride-safety-razor

        Pros: it works fine.

Cons: I have reprinted it about 3 times over the past two years because the top piece is thin and delicate. PETG seems to work better than PLA.

For blades: I’ve found that any name brand works OK, and the generic unbranded blades are garbage (painful tearing/snagging instead of cutting hair). I wish there was a way I could tell just by looking at the blades but I suspect its microscopic details on the edge. The sound and feel are very different though.

Best shave I get is from Schtick ST II. Just two blades, small head to get around contours.

I can’t really comprehend why a razor would need more than 2. I use a shavette, so for me 2 is too many.

Because big number is more better.

        That’s marketing 101.

This is why I’m still using the Gillette Slim Adjustable I got 40+ years ago. Still the best shave I can get.

I don’t know how to switch accounts and fucked up my wife’s entire persona she was building by commenting under her account. Instead of deleting the comments when I realised my mistake, I instead just switched accounts and left those comments there for her to find when she woke up. I claim to have planned to go back to delete them, but instead I was just gonna completely forget about them.

    I am so smart 🤓

A community for your defence shitposting needs

Rules

1. Be nice

Do not make personal attacks against each other, call for violence against anyone, or intentionally antagonize people in the comment sections.

2. Explain incorrect defense articles and takes

If you want to post a non-credible take, it must be from a “credible” source (news article, politician, or military leader) and must have a comment laying out exactly why it’s non-credible. Low-hanging fruit such as random Twitter and YouTube comments belong in the Matrix chat.

3. Content must be relevant

Posts must be about military hardware or international security/defense. This is not the page to fawn over Youtube personalities, simp over political leaders, or discuss other areas of international policy.

4. No racism / hatespeech

No slurs. No advocating for the killing of people or insulting them based on physical, religious, or ideological traits.

5. No politics

We don’t care if you’re Republican, Democrat, Socialist, Stalinist, Baathist, or some other hot mess. Leave it at the door. This applies to comments as well.

6. No seriousposting

We don’t want your uncut war footage, fundraisers, credible news articles, or other such things. The world is already serious enough as it is.

7. No classified material

Classified ‘western’ information is off limits regardless of how “open source” and “easy to find” it is.

8. Source artwork

If you use somebody’s art in your post or as your post, the OP must provide a direct link to the art’s source in the comment section, or a good reason why this was not possible (such as the artist deleting their account). The source should be a place that the artist themselves uploaded the art. A booru is not a source. A watermark is not a source.

9. No low-effort posts

No egregiously low effort posts. E.g. screenshots, recent reposts, simple reaction & template memes, and images with the punchline in the title. Put these in weekly Matrix chat instead.

10. Don't get us banned

No brigading or harassing other communities. Do not post memes with a “haha people that I hate died… haha” punchline or violating the sh.itjust.works rules (below). This includes content illegal in Canada.

11. No misinformation

NCD exists to make fun of misinformation, not to spread it. Make outlandish claims, but if your take doesn’t show signs of satire or exaggeration it will be removed. Misleading content may result in a ban. Regardless of source, don’t post obvious propaganda or fake news. Double-check facts and don’t be an idiot.
