Have you heard of Moonring? It’s a modern reimagination of the series (particularly 4 and beyond) with a hint from roguelikes’ combat and indie TTRPGs for the systems and the setting. I like the revamped talking interface and secrets scattered throughout its map.
Well it doesn’t have permadeath, it just incorporates grid-based combat mechanics from roguelikes like Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup and Brogue, to spice things up.

HUH. I will have to look. The word “roguelike” is an immediate turn off but my love for the series is enough to make me curious anyway
