Our 8th anniversary

So this is where we spent our 8th anniversary. We were able to get into a session at our temple here in Apex. They only have two enowment sessions a day, so we were lucky to get in. It is a beautiful little temple, only our second experience with the mini temples. We were pretty happy to be there, we even got to be the witness couple (probably because I misunderstood and had us there 45 minutes early). It didn't look like this when we got there, we had an incredible powerful storm blow in, it was amazing to sit in the restaurant and watch the rain come down before we went into the temple. The Turleys in the ward watched the kids, and they had fun too as they had a pseudo-sleepover. With only two sessions, we had to go the latest and didn't get back to Durham until 10ish.

Kathleen and Lily again (I must say that you would be hard pressed to find a mother of a 7 month old baby any where else that looks this good.....I dare you, you won't convince me:)
Me doing my best David Hasselhoff interpretation from Baywatch.
Kathleen and Benjamin

Since it was Tiffany's birthday (and since we had the wimm), we drove 2 and half hours from Durham to Wilmington, NC. There we went to Carolina beach, a beautiful sandy beach that seemed to stretch forever. We had fun playing in the waves, getting sunburns, bringing home tons of sand in our clothes, and having a lot of salt water injested. It was a lot of fun. OH, and Happy 29th Birthday Tiffany!

Our Girls

Just a couple pictures of our girls. Lily is an excellent big sister who loves to help, hold, and be with Gracie. They have lots of fun keeping each other awake at night as Lily tells Grace stories, and Grace giggles the night away.

A fun welcome...

I got home from work Saturday night to find the above pictured vandalism on our drive way and our front porch. It really isn't vandalism, and it is fun to feel welcome here. Thanks!

Fun at the Durham Science Museum

Jeff building with Jenga on crack, notice Kathleens leaning tower on the left...pretty talented
Lily next to her tower (it um, fell down)
Benjamin taking in the sites of Durham
Lily getting the water sprayers going
Getting ready to spray Dad and Mom
Benjamin has Lily in his sites

Grace had fun coming around for the ride

Grace tried to eat the butterfly (yumm, butter)
Dad doing Dad stuff....
Kathleen and the kids hunting more butterflies

We spent Saturday afternoon at the Durham Science museum. It was a lot of fun, getting to see all of the stuff there. We saw Lemers (FYI, apparently the real Lemur from Zabumafu lives at Duke university....we will check that out) and sprayed each other with water. wE played ultra competitive crazy jenga ( I put my last piece on my tower and then it crashed to the ground). And we got to see the butterflies in the pavilion, and the kids got to hold them. It was great

Kathleens Favorite Store

We have told some of you about Kathleen's new favorite store. It is just down the street, which is a good or bad thing (depending on your opinion with favorite stores). In fact the other day, she stopped, found a few things that she liked, and then Lily, Benjamin, and I all left the car and just hoofed it home. Yes, it is the notorious "Everything but Grannies Panties". On the top you can see us approaching the establishment, and the lower picture shows you the "blooming" sign (and yes, the pun was intended). We have had a bunch of fun with the name, Benjamin gets the biggest kick out of it. Lily, at times, makes the mistake of calling it Nanna Panties......we will leave it at that.

A note for J&K

We got this really nice postcard from J&K back in Denver. They sent a beautiful picture of the Denver mountains, and a little hint for us....just put it up on a western wall and you will never get lost in the tree encompased suroundings here. Well this is just to show them that it is up and looks great. We really appreciate it. Thanks much!!!

Elder Faust

Elder Faust passed away this morning, from www.lds.org the following statement:
"SALT LAKE CITY 10 August 2007 President James E. Faust, second counselor in the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, died at his home early this morning surrounded by his family.
President Faust, 87, had served in the First Presidency since 1995 and as a General Authority of the Church for 35 years. A Church statement today said that President Faust had died of “causes incident to age.”
The funeral will be held on Tuesday in the Salt Lake Tabernacle on Temple Square.
President Faust was appointed second counselor in the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on 12 March 1995. The First Presidency is the highest presiding body in the government of the Church.
He had previously served four years as an Assistant to the Twelve (the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles is the second-highest presiding body) before being appointed a member of the presidency of the First Quorum of the Seventy (other senior leaders in the Church) on 1 October 1976.
His most recent assignments included vice chairman of the Church Board of Education; the board of trustees of Brigham Young University; the Welfare Services Executive Committee; and Deseret Management Corporation.
Bruce Olsen, managing director of Church Public Affairs, said this morning that President Faust’s “gentle manner and depth of knowledge, which was an important part of his ministry for nearly 35 years, will be missed.”
“He was a true Christian who spoke and wrote with wit and wisdom,” Olsen said. “Many members of the Church loved his unique way of teaching the restored gospel of Jesus Christ at General Conference.”
Olsen said that Church members around the world are calling to extend to President Faust’s family their heartfelt condolences.
President Faust was born 31 July 1920, in Delta, Utah. He participated as a member of the University of Utah track team in 1938 and ran the quarter-mile and mile relay.
His college career was interrupted first to serve as a missionary for the Church in Brazil and later by World War II, during which he served in the U.S. Army Air Force and was discharged as a first lieutenant. In 1948 he graduated from the University of Utah with a bachelor's and Juris Doctor degree. He began the practice of law in Salt Lake City and continued until his appointment as a general authority of the Church in 1972.
He served as a member of the Utah Legislature from 1949 to 1951, as an advisor to the American Bar Journal, and president of the Utah Bar Association in 1962-1963. He received the Distinguished Lawyer Emeritus Award from the Utah Bar Association in 1995. In August of 1997, he received an Honorary Doctors Degree of Christian Service from Brigham Young University. He was honored as a Distinguished Alumni at the University of Utah in 1999, and was awarded the Honorary Order of the Coif at Brigham Young University in 2000. In 2003, he was given the Marion G. Romney Distinguished Service Award by Brigham Young University Law School, and he was awarded an Honorary Doctors of Law degree by the University of Utah. President John F. Kennedy appointed him to the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights in 1962.
In 1998 President Faust received a Brazilian national citizenship award — an honor given to only a select few world leaders — and was awarded honorary citizenship of the city of Sao Paulo.
Married to the former Ruth Wright of Salt Lake City, they are the parents of five children: James H. Faust, Janna R. Coombs, Marcus G. Faust, Lisa A. Smith, and Robert P. Faust. They have 25 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. "
It was pretty sad to hear about his passing. I have really enjoyed hearing him teach. I have really enjoyed knowing he served his mission in Brazil, the place that I learned to love on my mission also. Our prayers are with his family, we are greatful for his teachings and examples.

breaking free from the water

We really appreciate all of your comments yesterday. It is great to know that somebody besides myself is out there checking this thing out. These are just a bunch of random things that we did (mainly in Denver) but that I never got around to putting on the blog. We went to this cool water park (FREE) in Aurora-if you don't know where it is call Kathleen, the cell phone still works, and she can tell you where it is. The others are from a campout we went to with the DeGregori lab....it was fun but very hot. A bunch of them are of Grace here in NC, she seems to change everyday. She is scooting around, and on the verge of officially crawling. She has also found her favorite toy......paper. She loves to hold it, crinkle it, rip it, and of course eat it. I think she is going to be a paper maker when she grows up. Finally, buried in all of this is a picture that I took at the zoo. It was so cool, the gorilla was exactly in the pose that the Thinker is in Rodins' sculpture.
