White Christmas, Christmas in July

We headed up to Utah for a quick trip this last week for Christmas, so we got a White Christmas (I would have been happy with an Arizona Christmas, but I guess it actually rained here so we didn't miss any good weather.) The trip was great thanks to a last minute purchase (a portable dvd player) and Redbox (we rented movies in Paige, AZ and returned them in Highland, UT- gotta love it.) We were only in Utah for a few days, but we managed to see my family, some of Chris' family, and we also went snowmobiling! My sister got some snowmobiles for Christmas, so they took us out for a spin. Sadie had a blast playing with her grandparents and cousins! Sorry, no pictures, we had too much fun to stop and take pictures this trip, but we will try to do better next time!
Also, I think that we have already told a lot of people in person, but we are looking forward to a Christmas in July, of sorts this next year-- we're expecting baby #2! We are excited about having another little one and are very happy with the timing- other than me being pregnant during some of the summer months!

Toddler For Sale

I might even give her away for free.

Today has just been one of those days. It started off with Sadie's favorite game, where she takes off all of her clothes and diaper right when she wakes up. Today was especially fun because for the first time there was poop. Change the sheets, wipe down the crib (gross, I know) pre-rinse and wash Sadie, and attempt to start the day. We ran some errands and came home and Sadie and I did our before nap routine (read some books, drink some milk, go upstairs and say a prayer, and then put her down.) I decided to think ahead and as I changed her diaper I taped it on with packaging tape. All seemed well, until an hour later Sadie started screaming (not normal) I go in to find a repeat of this morning. The stupid packaging tape did nothing. This time I decided to also vacuum and clean the carpet, just to make sure.

I really don't know what to do. If there is one thing that I have no tolerance for, it is kids playing in poop. Both times I have put her in time out for a significantly longer time than I usually do while I cleaned up the mess. Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day . . .

I'm really this lazy . . .

I didn't feel like going through the hassle of putting together a Christmas and gathering addresses and mailing cards, but we just got some cute family pictures taken, so here is the compromise.

Repelling

Hurray for the end of November! It has been a busy and stressful month for our family (ok, mostly Chris.) Things are finally calming down and Chris decided that he wanted to go repelling, so our friend Matt and I went with him. It was my first time, so it took me a while to get talk myself into going over the edge, but it was fun! We will definitely be going again.
Sadie was so good, she just played at the bottom of the cliff while we went up and down. Chris decided that Sadie wanted to go repelling too, so he made her a little harness and we strapped her in and hung her up about 5 ft above the ground. She was so patient while Chris put her harness together and put it on her, she was definitely interested. We didn't bring our camera, but I snapped a picture on my phone so the quality isn't that great.
She thought it was cool for couple seconds, and then I think that we scared her and she was done. Not bad for 21 months!

Hey! Where'd Everyone Go?

In updating the look of our blog, we (which really means me) somehow lost our list of links to most of our friends' and families' blogs. If you notice that your blog is missing, please leave us a comment with your address.

An Experiment

About a month ago Chris and I decided to get serious about planting a garden, so we cleared some rock from the side of our house and made a make-shift planter box out of some of the cinder block that use to border our grass. We probably missed the peak planting time in Arizona by about a month, but we didn't want to wait another year, so we gave it a shot.

We were getting pretty discouraged because only 2 of the 7 kinds of plants actually sprouted. Then, this last week we went outside to find little sprouts everywhere!

Here is what I am looking forward to the most. I don't know if you can tell in the picture, but the cilantro shaped leaves are already forming!

I'm sure there is still a lot of work a head of us, and plenty of potentiality to kill our plants, but we're learning! Who knows, if all goes well, next year we'll probably try and clear all of the rocks and use the whole area as a garden.

the first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem

I am addicted to making flowers for little girls hair.

For any of you with little girls, I am selling flower clips and crochet headbands for $1 apiece plus shipping (if needed.) I make flowers in a variety colors and they are anywhere from 3" - 4.5". The headbands are 1.5" wide and come in 15 colors, but the medium brown is not shown here.

I'm sure you can recognize my model. I'm sad that I just discovered these headbands, because when Sadie had less hair I was looking for headbands that were soft and stretchy, like these. Most of her headbands left marks on her head, so I rarely used them. These headbands are great, and even fit me.

Here are some of my most recent flower creations. I'm sure Kristen had no idea what kind of a monster she was creating when she helped me make my first flowers. I mostly like daisies, but have been known to do a few orchids. I think there is a poinsettia in there, too (Christmas is coming up.)

Put them together and you have a way cute headband. I'm mostly selling the flowers on ebay in sets, but if any of you are interested, or know anyone interested, in flowers or headbands just come over, call me, or email me (princesslolly18@hotmail.com) and I can let you know what I have, or you can let me know what you want, and I'll see if I can make something to suit your needs. I am still experimenting with new flowers, and sets, but I will probably always have at least 15 different colors and sizes of flowers at any time.

I'm not really launching a really serious business here. I had my flower making under control until I wanted to buy a few of these crochet headbands from a local store for $4/each. I did some investigating and found my own for a lot cheaper, but I had to buy in serious bulk (think more than 500 headbands.) And the flowers are a natural companion to the headbands, so there you go.
If you or someone you know is looking for something like this please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions!

Bye- Bye Binkie

This week Chris and I decided that it was time for Sadie to be done with the pacifier. She mostly uses it when she goes down for a nap or for bed, but sometimes she likes to sneak it in her mouth when we aren't paying attention.
So yesterday I decided to put our plan into action. After we got home from church (a pacifier-less event) I gathered all of the pacifiers, snipped the end of one of them and gave it to Sadie. I tried not to laugh as she took two sucks and it fell out of her mouth. She seemed confused, but she just picked it up and put it back in her mouth for another few sucks, after which she spit it out and said, "yucky!!" I put her down for a nap with her broken pacifier and it took her about 1/2 hr to fall asleep. It only took 5 minutes last night, so it is getting better! This morning she took the 'yucky' pacifier and threw it away in the garbage, so I am hoping that is the last we will see of pacifiers in our house for a while. I am sure that she will have a hard time for a while going to sleep without it, but we should have done this a while ago!!!

Yay for a new Computer!

So we finally broke down and got a new computer (we've been using Chris' laptop from law school, and lets just say that it has seen better days.) I finally gave in when Chris, the man who never asks for anything for his birthday, Christmas, etc., sounded interested in a computer. I kinda had to give in. It will probably end up being a bit of a Christmas gift for both of us, too. I didn't realize how bad our laptop was until we got the new computer. . . It does not hurt to have a 20" screen now, either.

Maybe Chris will start blogging more now. Probably not.

Are your parents here?

For those of you who didn't believe me when I said that people think I look young, no joke, a salesman just came by our house, and when I answered the door he asked me if my parents were home.

Happy Birthday Chris!

Today is Chris' birthday, and tonight he gets to do some really fun activities: go to 2 sessions of stake conference!! I know that you are jealous.

Happy Halloween!

Sadie loves Belle (I might have had something to do with it!) Sadie has really started talking recently. We were at the store this morning and she saw a picture of the Disney princesses and she yelled, "Belle!!"

She is also obsessed with shoes.

Better Late Then Never

I am amazed at what I can get done when I wake up at 6. To top it all off, I love my sleepy daughter and the book Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child that has helped me understand her. Sadie has been having a hard time transitioning from two naps to one, so we put her to bed 1/2 hour early last night (6:30 instead of 7) and she is still sleeping (14 hours later, but I guess she normally sleeps around 13 hrs at night.) Hallelujah!I mean it is great to have all of the free time, but Sadie is so much happier when she gets all of the sleep that she needs.
So, I've been trying to catch up on some things this morning, and decided it was finally time to post some pictures for my moms. Both my mom and Chris' mom have been here within the last month or so, and they both helped me with some decorating, and I told them I'd post some pictures of how some things turned out.

We mainly worked on the family room:
A different angle:

The entertainment center:
Window #1:
Window #2:
Window #3:
After we painted the bathroom I decided to paint the mirror, too. I like how it turned out (it use to be a bronzey-gold.)
We'll make sure to post some pictures of Sadie's oh-so-cute Halloween Costume later today.

Cheap lights, anyone?

Last night Holly called to tell me that they are selling older Mesa temple lights at the Tri-Stake Center for free to $.25/strand. They only have the little Christmas light strands, but talk about a great deal, so I hopped on over and picked myself up some. The man in charge over there told me to tell my friends about it and that they would be back on Wed night. I guess they sell lights anytime they have groups come help prepare lights for this year's display, so he said groups usually start at 7, but there is usually someone there at 6. I left at just after 8:30 and they were shutting things down (So, you could go from 6-8:30 on Wednesday.) The tri-stake center is on Horne and 2nd ave (or is it 2nd st?) and the light room is on the Northeastern side of the building, with the door on the east side. If anyone goes (I'm guessing probably Audrey or Teri will go) would you mind picking me up a multicolor strand, I'll pay you the 25 cents. Holly gave me the good idea to have an extra strand just in case to replace light bulbs. If not, no big deal. Merry Early Christmas!

Check your sources!!

The most frustrating part about elections for me is dividing fact from fiction. If there is anything that I have learned from law school (didn't you know I went to law school??) is that there are always two sides to very situation and issue, and each can be believable if heard seperately. One of my favorite things I like about Chris being my best friend is that because he is my friend he will question my beliefs and at the same time still love me for having my own opinions. If I make some political or moral comment he will usually take the other side and argue for it, whether or not he really believes it. These are usually some of the best conversations that we have because I know that he is not doing it to make me mad or to change my mind, but just to challenge me on some of my beliefs so that I know why I back them. I love that we can 'argue' two sides of an issue without attacking each other.
I am sure that most of you have already made up your mind as who to vote for, but in case you are teetering, like I was, these are the sources that I found helpful.
1. The Presidential Debates. If you missed them they are on U Tube.
2. If I have a question about John McCain and what he intends to do in office I don't ask Fox News, CNN, Rush Limbaugh, or any other 'news' source; I ask him: http://www.johnmccain.com
The same for Barack Obama: https://barackobama.com
3. factcheck.org- both sides are guilty of misinforming us in public speaches, etc.
4. I also enjoyed this website that Kristen found from wikipedia that I found compared the two canidates pretty fairly on issues like taxes, health care, same-sex marriage, abortion, immigration, to name a few.
Wikipedia also has this website that I found educational on the propistions that we are facing here in arizona.

Girl's Camp Flashback

Tonight some ladies and young women in our ward got together and sang a few songs to a sister to try and comfort her at a tough time. It was a great experience and I felt like I was back at girls camp when the young women sang "Walk Tall You're a Daughter." It is one of my favorite songs and I was amazed that I still remembered all but a line even though it has been at least 5 years since I sang it last. I thought I'd post the lyrics for those of you who don't know it and for those of you who get as much enjoyment out of it as I do.

Words and Music by Jamie Glenn

Right now I have a prayer deep within my heart.
A prayer for each of you there is a special part
That you remember who you are and Him who lives above
Please seek for Him and live His way; You'll feel His love.

(Chorus)
Walk tall you're a daughter, a child of God.
Be strong, please remember who you are.
Try to understand, you're part of His great plan.
He's closer than you, reach up, He'll take your hand.

Long before the time you can remember,
Our father held you in His arms so tender.
Those loving arms released you as He sent you down to earth.
He said, "My child, I love you, don't forget your great worth."

(chorus)

This life on earth we knew would not be easy.
At times we lose our way, His plan we may not see.
But please remember, always, please, that you are not alone.
He'll take your hand, He loves you. He will guide you home.
(chorus)

Makeup S.O.S.

I'm looking for some advice that most of you ladies should have an opinion about.

This all started on Saturday when we were hanging out at the Davis' watching the BYU football game before Chris and I went to a firm banquet. Just before we had to leave I managed to glance at a mirror and notice that although I had a nice blouse and skirt on, I had NO makeup on. For those of you who know me you know that I usually look at least 5-10 years younger than I really am even with makeup on, and so you can imagine how horrified I was to realize that I would look at the oldest 15 to most of these established professionals that my husband works with. I wonder what they think of Chris for having a child bride. It really is humiliating. Not to mention the fact that Chris told them to put Lolly on my name tag instead of Laurel, further emphasizing my childishness. I'm ok with most people calling me Lolly, as long as they know me and can see past the juvenile name that I fear will follow me into my golden years.

Back to the topic, I confessed to Teri how dumb I felt about not having any makeup on, and being the nice person she is she let me borrow some basics like eyeshadow and eyeliner (and I don't want to hear any lectures on why people shouldn't share makeup.) She had this really cool eye shadow that I have since purchased for myself from L'Oreal called bare naturals. It's great stuff.

Now that I have gotten all of my ranting out, here is the real question. What makeup brands and products have you enjoyed and do you have any suggestions on application or what to do to make me look older? I am really pretty clueless when it comes to makeup, so anything will help.

Through all of this crummy economy business, there is at least one bright side:

Our Costco now has gas for under $3/gallon!

I can't believe that I am happy to be paying $2.99/ gallon.

3 Babies

Baby #1: Baby #2 (borrowed from a neighbor for the day):
Baby #3 (borrowed from my parents for the week):
What a morning!! I know a day is going to be bad when I have to wake baby #1 up so that we can get somewhere, but I didn't think it would be this crazy. Chris and I had to go sign some insurance docs this morning at 8 and when we got home we realized that we had no idea where baby #3 was. She probably slipped out when baby #2 was dropped off this morning (at 7.)
We'll call this situation #1. After a frantic search, it was discovered that our neighbors had found her and called the number on her tag, (a Utah number) who called my parent's vet, who called my parent's home and left a message. Apparently baby #3's tags are rabies tags and not name tags. Luckily, I called my sister, who went to my mom's house, checked her messages and called the vet, who told her the dog was at my neighbor's home.
Situation #2: We are going to a dinner party tonight and I needed some fresh cilantro and limes to make some rice, so I decided to run to the grocery store to pick them up before the a/c man's precise visit time of early afternoon to late morning (in that order.) Did I mention that our other a/c unit is having the same trouble that the other one was having last month? So I am running to the grocery store with 2 kids (which scares me to death) and I am pulling into the parking lot when I get a called from the a/c guy who says that he will be at our house in 5-10 minutes. So, I turned around to go home.
The good news of the day is that I now know a great a/c repairman. He repaired the same part as the guy did last month in 1/2 of the time and for 1/3 of the price, which is great because we just couldn't talk ourselves into renewing our home warranty- which expired 5 days ago! Happy 1 year anniversary to us and our house-, so this time we have to pay the whole bill. The funny thing is that the guy who came and fixed it under our home warranty last month told me that he would probably have charged me $350 to fix it, and that was a good deal because some guys would charge up to $500. "Good Deal" is a relative term.
Keeping them all fed is taking the majority of my time this morning. Baby #1 insisted on having what baby #2 was having for breakfast (rice cereal.) Then when I gave baby#1 her lunch I turned around to find that she had given it to baby #3 who had devoured 3/4 of it in 3 seconds. All and all, it is not so bad having three babies dependent on me, but I don't think that I could do this all of the time, yet! Kudos to you mothers of multiple babies out there!

A Little Update

It's been a busy week here at the Olson home. Chris' mom visited and helped me finally get some decorations in our house. I guess I kept her busy between painting the bathroom and kitchen, going to at least a dozen stores, rearranging and assembling furniture, and hanging pictures (which is way harder than it sounds.)

Then the four of us drove to Utah to attend Aaron's wedding (Chris' brother.) Chris and I separated on Friday because Aaron and Courtney were having a family dinner the same night that my nephew, Dallen, was to be baptized. I found myself in Salt Lake with a couple free minutes so I called up Rachelle and Jeff and we spent some time together with Brook and Dave. After the baptism I headed up to Ogden and had a great time at Aaron and Courtney's wedding. Our only complaint about the trip, other than the fact that Brian and Dalene's flight got cancelled which left them with no way to get to the wedding and left us without the opportunity to meet Zoey, was that it was over way too fast!!

Tagged Again

It appears that the only time that I have been posting lately is when I get tagged, so here goes another. This is a home photo scavenger hunt of sorts.

1. The fridge:
Inside the fridge, luckily for me I just cleaned out the fridge the other day.
2. The toilet. This is literally how I found it because Sadie likes to close the lid to the toilet.
3. The closet, at least my side.
The sink. At least it is mostly clean.
My favorite room: Well, we have been trying to make our family room a little more homey, and this is a pic a month or so ago of one of the walls:
I don't know how well you can tell in the picture below, but we added some pictures, a plant, and we added trim around our windows.

6. The laundry room. Not one of its best days, I'll admit.
7. Dream Vacation: The beach sounds good right now, with any luck we'll be in Hawaii next spring.
8. My kid. I don't know if she was finger painting or body painting.

9. Favorite Shoes. Notice the paint on them?

10. Self Portrait.

The Next Top Model

I have conflicting feelings about even posting this, but I think there are some of you out there who would benefit from the information, so I will share it.
My friend Audrey's sister-in-law Brigette has started her own modest tee company called Getti's Accesories. I never thought I would wear something like a crop top or tank, but they have designed some shirts that can be layered underneath tops that need a little help to make them modest, without adding the bulk (and warmth) of wearing an additional shirt. It feels so natural and comfortable to only wear half of an undershirt, especially here in Arizona where it was still over 100 degrees yesterday.
Well now for the reason that I don't want to post this. Audrey has some great connection at ABC's Arizona morning show, Sonoran Living, and has gotten Brigette a segment in their show tomorrow (September 8th) and she asked me to go on the show with her and be a model. I do not think that I am anywhere near model material and at the time I said yes I thought that the whole thing would be fun. Now that it is tomorrow I am very scared and nervous. I'm sure that I won't really have to do anything, and will not be the main focus, but I'm still scared! If anyone has any advice I'd appreciate it, and I am really glad that most of you will not be able to even get the show because it is only in Arizona, so I don't have to worry about people I know watching me.

The Joys of Owning a Home and Other Random Stuff

I never really realized how nice it was to call someone else whenever we had home problems. Our house really isn't that old (about 13 years old) but it seems like it has just been one thing after another the last few days. First of all we came home from our vacation and found that we had a leak in our pool cleaner pump thing, so two trips to the pool store and 3 hours later we replaced the part, but we still need to reseal it (hopefully this will get done this weekend.) Then, I got home from having lunch with some girls in my ward on Thursday and found that our a/c unit upstairs stopped working. Luckily for us, our home warranty is still in effect, so we called them up, and someone just came and fixed it the next day for $50 instead of $350. Which brings me to the topic of home warranties. Has anyone had any good or bad experiences with them? I keep going back and forth between thinking I need one, and thinking that it is a huge waste of money.

Now, on to some other random stuff. Last week our friends Kristen and Eric came down so that Eric could interview with a law firm in Phoenix. We had a blast! Other than constantly reminding them that they should move back to Arizona when Eric finishes law school, we really enjoyed visiting with them. Kristen introduced me to my new hobby, or I guess a new version of an existing hobby. We made these cute flower bow things. Speaking of hobbies, we just got a new craft store called Hobby Lobby down the street and it is GREAT! Here is a picture of some from our first attempt at flower bows:

Of course, I couldn't stop there, so I made some more that are a little smaller and are Sadie sized. Here are some of them:

And I'm going to post a few more pictures of our trip for my mom.

Sadie's first trip to the beach! Lani's family invited us to the beach for a party the night before the wedding at Manhattan Beach.

I just thought this was too adorable for words. I'm not sure if she is folding her arms because she is cold, or if she is just mimicking Heather (you can see that Heather's arms are folded in the previous picture.)

Disneyland and Club 33

We had a great time at Disneyland this last week, but no, we did not go to Club 33. Never heard of Club 33? Me either until yesterday and am finding the whole thing pretty crazy. I wouldn't have believed it but for a friend who told me she has been there. It is a secret, elite restaurant in New Orleans in Disneyland. Currently it costs $10,400- $27,000 just to become a member and $3,275-$6100 for yearly dues. Wouldn't it be nice to have that kind of money to throw around? My friend said that the waiting list was about a year long to get a reservation, and Club 33 is rumored to have 9-14 year waiting list to become a member. You get into the park for free, but the cost to have dinner or lunch is around the same price as the entrance fee. My friend also said that they got to go to the front of all of the lines (fast passes, I can only assume) which doesn't surprise me because the club was created because Disney wanted to be able to entertain and give them the best Disneyland experience possible. It seems like a fun idea, but an expensive way to be allowed to spend $80 for a meal at Disneyland, but I guess the secrecy and exclusivity add to the intrigue. I'm trying to decide what I would do with the opportunity to become a member (assuming I already waited 9-14 years.) Would it really add at least $3,275 worth of enjoyment to my disneyland experience?

Although we had a good Disneyland experience, I was disappointed that we did not see any of the Disney princesses. Apparently, the week before we went they were arrested, in costume, picketing for higher wages.

Chris and Sadie on Pirates of the Caribbean
I think this is the only picture we have of Chris' mom and dad, ever

Mom and Brian on the teacups. I swear that is one of the best rides, ever. With four adults, we had the teacup spinning!
This picture is taken in California adventures, at the big orange. When we went to Disneyland on our honeymoon we loved the orange ride (similar to the fair rides with the swings) and proceeded to ride it multiple times. We have a similar picture from 4 years ago.

Back to Reality

We are sad to be home from our vacation, but all good things must end. Congratulations to Josh and Lani, who got married on Saturday and gave us the excuse to go to southern California!

Chris, Mom, Dad, Lani, Josh, Heather and Brian

Chris and Sadie waiting on the temple steps for the happy couple to come out.

Family Pic

Grandpa Mickelsen, Mom, and Grandma Mickelsen. We are so lucky to have such great grandparents; we are especially lucky to have Grandpa Mickelsen who has sealed Josh and Lani, Heather and Scott, Brian and Dalene, and us!

That is all I have time for right now, more vacation pictures and Disneyland pictures to come.

Back Behind Bars

As most of you have probably already guessed, the toddler bed experiment did not work out. Sadie is back behind bars, and I think that all three of us will appreciate the extra sleep she gets because she is in a crib.

Toddler Bed

I left Sadie and Chris alone for a couple hours last night and this is what I came home to:

Chris changed Sadie's crib into a toddler bed. I don't know how I feel about that, I kinda liked knowing that Sadie was stuck in her crib during nap time. But then, late this morning I found this:

It's her new favorite play place. At first I thought that it was cute, but then I thought about how she could get the toys out in her room and just play through nap time. So far she is 10 minutes into her afternoon nap and I don't hear anything . . . we will have to wait and see if she falls asleep or not.

We've noticed some other interesting quirks about our daughter. I got this picture of her last week:

Who likes to play in bookcases? Also if you look very carefully you can see that Sadie is holding two markers (she doesn't know that the lids come off yet or how to take them off,) a tape measure, and some chap stick. Sadie is inseparable from that chap stick (which she also can not open.) Some people have key chains to hold their chap stick; I have Sadie. Also, some kids like to sleep with stuffed animals or toys; Sadie likes to sleep with her chap stick.
