ANTHONY LAKE CONVERTED TO JUDAISM

Yes, Anthony Lake is Jewish (Now) (JTA)
Obama’s foreign policy adviser, Tony Lake, was at NYU today, talking to students at the Bronfman Center about why he thinks the Democratic presidential hopeful is so great. But before he got into details, Lake, who served as national security adviser in the Clinton administration, described his own history of first being mistaken for, and then actually becoming, a Jew.

RUDY ON JEWISH ISSUES

JTA PODCAST: Rudy Speaks (JTA)
In between campaign stops in Florida, Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani talked Monday with JTA about his efforts in the Sunshine State, the religious rhetoric in the GOP race, the Israeli-Palestinian peace effort, changes that he would like to see made in America’s approach to foreign aid and his popularity in the Jewish community.

Giuliani: Open to Abbas, but skeptical (JTA)
Rudy Giuliani said that Mahmoud Abbas may have the right intentions toward Israel, but it is unclear if he is capable of following through.

In an interview Monday with JTA, Giuliani laid out four criteria the Palestinians must meet if a peace process is to go forward: declare support for Israel's right to exist as a Jewish state, state that they will end terrorism, exercise control over terrorism, and demonstrate their intentions to build an accountable government.

"If all those things are really happening, and we are satisfied that they're really happening, then you have the basis for a peace process," the Republican presidential candidate said, during a day of intense campaigning in Florida. "If not, we should not create expectations that cant be fulfilled, like has happened in the past."

Giuliani said that while the peaceful intentions of Abbas, the president of the Palestinian Authority, appeared to be genuine, it is unclear whether he has the power to deliver.

Some right-leaning Israelis and American Jews who often share Giuliani's hawkish views on the Middle East have been increasingly critical of Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and U.S. President George W. Bush's willingness to negotiate with Abbas. But Giuliani expressed confidence in both leaders, saying he holds them in "high personal regard."

"I come from the school of Ronald Reagan, which is trust but verify," Giuliani said. "Trust is one thing, but then lets verify and make sure these things are actually taking place. That's the more important part of it."

IT'S THE ISLAMOFASCISM, STUPID (CONT.)

HERE'S A FOLLOW UP TO AN EARLIER POST, IT'S THE ISLAMOFASCISM, STUPID.

Tanveer Ahmed: Islam must face its uncomfortable truths (Australian)
The latest attack in Britain shows how the Islamist threat is being driven by something much grander than mere foreign policy or feelings of grievance. The perpetrators believe they are soldiers in the perceived historical battle between good and evil.

The methods of attack are becoming more brazen, amateurish and desperate, illustrated most profoundly by the burning terrorist at Glasgow airport shouting "Allah" while struggling with a policeman, but the ideological roots are unchanged.

As a commentator on Muslim affairs and home-grown terrorism, I am often asked whether there is something in Islam itself that is contributing to terrorist acts. As someone who is not a theological expert, I shy away from strong pronouncements on the issue, preferring to discuss the sociological roots of alienation and the modern symbol of protest that Islam has become.

But the question is impossible to avoid and I believe that theology is central and not peripheral to the problem. It is grounded in history, but the sparks have been generated by the information age.

While the images of poverty and war in countries such as Sudan, Palestine or Iraq combined with the relative disadvantage of some Muslim communities in countries such as France or Britain may contribute to radicalisation, the foundation for their acts lies very much in the set of ideas called Islam. I have lost count of the number of occasions disgruntled Muslims have responded to my writings with comments like "Islam is peace" or "You are not a Muslim any more".

Truth be told, I was never a practising Muslim, despite growing up in a Bangladeshi community where religiosity was the norm.

This had more to do with being raised in a secular household and society than any great misgivings about Islam. In fact, I often watched friends who were able to practise a spiritual version of the religion with envy, wishing that I could subscribe to a greater purpose than myself.
But with hindsight, I can see that what we now call extremism was virtually the norm in the community I grew up in. It was completely normal to view Jews as evil and responsible for the ills of the world. It was normal to see the liberal society around us as morally corrupt, its stains to be avoided at all costs. It was normal to see white girls as cheap and easy and to see the ideal of femininity as its antithesis. These views have been pushed to more private, personal spheres amid the present scrutiny of Muslim communities.

But they remain widespread, as research in Britain showed earlier this year: up to 50 per cent of British Muslims aged between 15 and 29 want to see sharia law taken up in Britain. This needs to be seen in the light of American data collated by the Pew Research Centre that showed close to 80 per cent of American Muslims believed they could move up the social ladder in the US and had no interest in Islamic laws on a public level. Like most things Australian, it is likely we sit somewhere between our British and American cousins.

But the threat is very real. It was reported yesterday that up to 3000 young Muslims are at risk of becoming radicalised in Sydney alone, according to research by a member of the now-disbanded Muslim Community Reference Group, Mustapha Kara-Ali. But when these views morph into the violent political act that is terrorism, it is very much based in theology.

At its core, Islam is deeply sceptical of the idea of a secular state. There is no rendering unto Caesar because state and religion are believed to be inseparable. This idea then interacts with centuries-old edicts of Islamic jurists about how the land of Islam should interact with the world of unbelievers, known as dar ul-kufr. The modern radicals then take it further, declaring that since, with the exception perhaps of Pakistan and Iran, there are no Islamic states, the whole world is effectively the land of the unbelievers. As a result, some radicals believe waging war on the whole world is justified to re-create it as an Islamic state.

They go as far as reclassifying the globe as dar ul-harb, "land of war", apparently allowing Muslims to destroy the sanctity of the five rights that every human is granted under Islam: life, wealth, land, mind and belief. In dar ul-harb, anything goes, including the killing of civilians.

While it may appear absurd to most, this nihilistic but exclusivist world view is clearly attracting significant numbers of young Muslims. British police have suggested the latest attacks and foiled plots may have involved teenagers. But the obvious absurdity of the set of ideas is still grounded in Islam, which, regardless of how theological experts argue, can be interpreted in many ways.

Muslim communities must openly argue precisely what it is they fear and loathe about the West. Much of it centres on sexuality. This is the first step in rooting out any Muslim ambivalence about living in the West. But thereafter, the argument must proceed rapidly to Islamic theology and all its uncomfortable truths - from its repeated glowing references to violence, its obsession with and revulsion at sex and its historical antipathy to the very possibility that reason can exist as separate from God.

HAMAS RELEASES AUDIO OF KIDNAPPED ISRAELI SOLDIER

TWO QUESTIONS. FIRST, WHY DOES THE MEDIA REFER TO SHALIT AS "CAPTURED" AND THE BBC REPORTER BEING HELD AS "KIDNAPPED?". SECOND, WHERE IS THE U.N. AND THE HUMAN RIGHTS COMMUNITY TO CONDEMN THIS WAR CRIME?

Shalit says his health is deteriorating (YNet)
Hamas on Monday released a recorded message from captured IDF soldier Gilad Shalit, the first sign of life from the young serviceman since he was abducted exactly one year ago. In the message, posted on a Hamas website, Shalit sent greetings to his family and said his health was deteriorating. He also expressed disappointment in the "lack of interest" of the Israeli government in his fate.

"Mother and father, my sister and brother, my friends in the Israel Defense Forces. I greet you from prison and miss you all," he said.

"I have spent a full year in prison, and my health is still deteriorating, and I need a prolonged hospitalization. I regret the lack of interest on the part of the Israeli government and the Israel Defense Forces in my case and their refusal to meet the demands of the al-Qassam brigades," he added.

Shalit was captured on June 25, 2006, by gunmen from Hamas and two allied groups who tunneled into Israel from the Gaza Strip. Negotiations for his release, mediated by Egypt, have repeatedly broken down and been complicated since Hamas took control of Gaza two weeks ago.

In the tape, Shalit called on the Israeli government to meet Palestinian demands for a large-scale prisoner swap. "Just as I have parents, a mother and father, the thousands of Palestinian prisoners have mothers and fathers to whom their sons must be returned," he said.

"I have a great hope from my government that it show more interest in me and meet the demands of the mujahideen (captors)."

Before Monday, Shalit, 20, had not been seen or heard from since he was captured, though there have been reports that a letter was sent to his family. The website did not say when the tape was made. But the recording - accompanied by a photo of Shalit and footage of Hamas gunmen and images of last year's attack - appeared to be authentic.
The recording also was played on Hamas' Al Aqsa TV station in Gaza.

Shalit's father, Noam, listened to the tape on Channel 2 television, asking the station to play it a second time for the soldier's mother to hear. He said it appeared that the statement was coerced.

"I imagine that it's the same as the letter they dictated to him and doesn't reflect his real state," he said. "We want somebody independent to see him, to examine him and the conditions under which he is held, his medical condition of course and his mental (state)."

Earlier Monday, the militants holding Shalit said he was in good health and being treated well. "Shalit is alive and in very good shape," Said Abu Mujahid, a spokesman for the Hamas-allied Popular Resistance Committees. "His health is good and he's stable. We are treating him according to our religion's instructions on how to deal with war prisoners."

Report: Captured IDF Soldier Held in Booby-Trapped Gaza Building (Reuters/Ha'aretz)
Israel Channel 2 television reported Sunday that Israel Defense Forces soldier Gilad Shalit, captured a year ago in a cross-border raid into Israel, was being held in an underground room inside a booby-trapped building near Shaboura close to Rafah. Shalit's living quarters are accessible down a ladder through a 15-meter deep shaft lined with explosives, the report said.

BRITISH LORD: HAMAS IS MODERATE

I WONDER IF HE WOULD FIND THEM AS MODERATE IF THEY SHOT ROCKETS AT BRITISH SCHOOLS, BLEW UP BUSES FULL OF BRITS AND CALLED FOR GENOCIDE AGAINST BRITS? MAYBE. I'M SURE HIS LEFTY SELF-HATRED KNOWS NO LIMITS.

British Lord: 'To Hell with America' (LGF)
British member of Parliament Lord Andrew Phillips, in an interview with BBC Radio, says “To hell with America,” and means it. He’s just returned from meeting with Dr. Ismail Haniyeh of the activist group Hamas in Gaza, and he’s all fired up about their moderate message.

HERE'S THE INTERVIEW. HERE'S THE TRANSCRIPT:

“To hell with the Americans, frankly...”

“The roadmap has been a roadmap to nowhere. We have done absolutely nothing and the despair within Palestine, the sense of betrayal that they feel towards us in particular, the double standards and hypocrisy that they think we’re guilty of and which if I’m absolutely honest I can share that sensation.”

“I was impressed with Mr Haniyeh. He’s a moderate, he‘s doing his best, but he has no traction on that situation without legitimacy and some sign that the West takes him and his government seriously.”
THAT LAST BIT IS REVEALING. ACCORDING TO THIS IN-BRED BRITISH DUNCE, PEACE WOULD REIGN IF THE WEST TOOK THE HAMAS GOVERNMENT SERIOUSLY. I WISH THIS PRIVILEGED IMBECILE WOULD TAKE HAMAS SERIOUSLY BY TAKING THEM AT THEIR WORD (AND ACTIONS) IN THEIR DESIRE TO COMMIT GENOCIDE.
