As far as his appearance, the doctor says that there will be very little change. But because he moved the lower jaw back a bit, he will have a little less profile. It's hard to envision what he'll look like because of all the swelling. Right now he has a strong resemblance to Jon Lovitz. So even if he stayed like this forever, that would be fine. Who doesn't think Jon Lovitz is sexy? But I do think he will have to develop a stronger sense of humor. You can't pull off a look like this without being VERY funny. And, even though Jakob was voted 'Class Clown' in high school, he's been working as an accountant with other accountants for about five years. And that has definitely sabotaged his comedic style. No one could walk away from that monotony without being a little jaded. :)
Jakob has to communicate with us through writing. And Kobe is having a fun time writing notes to Daddy. Here's one he wrote. He's so sweet. This is what it says:
Today, Mother's Day, I want to pay a little tribute to my mother. There are going to be lots and LOTS of pictures. Because I am the oldest child, I'm lucky enough to have lots of pictures of just me and my mom. If I didn't include a lot of photos in this post, it wouldn't be a true representation of my mother. She's a big fan of the camera. In fact, that's one of the many things I love about her. She has instilled in me the importance of documenting memories with pictures, and I'm already grateful for all the pictures I've taken of my own family.
My mom is extremely gifted at working with small children. But, more importantly, she was absolutely flawless when it came to parenting us when we were young. My sister and I were very fortunate to be born in slots 1 and 2, because it means that we were aware and can now remember how my mother parented us and our little brothers. It feels like I was enrolled in a parenting master class. When I went off to BYU, I took a few child development and parenting classes for my major. Everything I learned there absolutely confirmed that my mom was gifted with the ability to work with and raise small children.
Here we are dressed up for a 'Merrie Miss'
It's only now, with a few small children of my own, that I realize how incredibly challenging and confusing raising small children can be.
Do you notice Santa's wondering eye? I'm not going to dwell on it too much, as it is a definite sore spot for my dad. Let's just say that my mom has always had a glow about her that has oft attracted the friendliness of jolly old men.
Thank you, Mom, for choosing me to be in your family before this life. I know everyone wanted in. But you could only take six. Maybe I sung you a song. Or threw you a surprise party. Or made you a carmeled apple. I guess I must be something special to have been 1 of 6 chosen to be in your family. :) You definitely have a natural ability with children, but even knowing what to do doesn't make it easy. So thanks for taking time with us rugrats and following through.
I've heard the some people disregard the importance of the 'younger years'. But some people aren't smart. In fact, some people are silly (which is the word that my mom taught us to replace s--pid with). But you taught us not to make fun of some people. So I won't. But we all know how crucial the younger years are, and I'm grateful that you were my mom. And I'm even more grateful that I had you as the perfect example to learn from as I attempt to emulate you with my own children. I'm struggling. But I think that's why I have boys. They'll forgive me. They forget. But girls remember. (Just ask Jakob.) Happy Mother's Day!
The Flowbee: When we visited our friends, the Harlows, last summer, Denae told me all about how she cuts her little boy's hair with 'The Flowbee'. She said it worked great. It was on my mind every time I spent $30 bucks to take the boys to get their hair cut. I have tried to cut my boys' hair in the past, and it does not come naturally to me at all. But someday Jude will grow hair, and when that happens, we'll break the bank every month having to cut all the boys' hair. So one of my "this will be for my birthday" purchases was the Flowbee. AND IT IS AWESOME! You hook it up to your handheld vacuum and it sucks their hair and cuts. It's almost foolproof! It will always cut evenly, and there is no mess at all. Not even a single strand of hair on the neck. Kobe and Luke's hair looked...okay. I still have some things to learn. But it was definitely a huge improvement over my previous attempts to cut their hair, as well as fast and painless. If you have a son, I would definitely recommend 'The Flowbee'! (Don't let the low-budget, 'we may steal your identity' look of the website scare you. I'm sure they're just trying to clear out a warehouse full of 'Flowbees' that have been sitting there for 15 years, and feel no need for frills or embellishments. Besides, the product sells itself!)Leggings: Now, I'm usually not one to jump on the latest trends, but have you noticed that leggings are back in style? And I am all over it. I have two pair of leggings, black and white, and I take every opportunity I can to pair them with an outfit. They are so comfortable! I feel like I'm staying in my pajamas all day. I put them under shorts, dresses, or long shirts. And I'm sometimes tempted to sleep in them at the end of the day. They're just so warm and cozy. And, it is my personal opinion (as well as that of my sweetest ever husband), that they are very flattering. I think they make my legs look more toned (a.k.a. less flabby). And I also want to mention that I have really appreciated everyone's support about my short hair cut. So I hope that it doesn't offend anyone that I've photoshopped some of my old, long hair onto these pictures. This is one of the projects I worked on during my birthday when Jakob was watching the kids. I just needed a boost of confidence. And speaking of Photoshop......
Photoshop: I am an amateur, at best, on Photoshop. But I've gotten a few snippets of advice from some experts, so I feel I'm good enough to accomplish what I want to. When there's a will (like seeing what I would look like now with long hair), there's a way to figure it out. I think Photoshop is amazing. And I'm sure that I would be even more amazed at what can be done if I knew how. Maybe someday. Here are some of the projects I've done with Photoshop. The first is a picture from Kobe's birthday. Kobe and Luke were both looking at the camera, but little Jude was distracted. So I fixed it. The second is a picture for a bookmark I made for my blond niece for her baptism. I wanted her face to be on the painting of a girl getting a blessing, so I did it. And the last is my exact same face, but with long hair. None of these are flawless, but it's good enough for me!
