Lago Powell

This weekend we went to Lake Powell with a handful of friends this weekend.  It was really fun!  Skiing, wakeboarding, tubing, hiking, swimming, water volleyball (i actually touched the ball!  and got plowed in the stomach by malorie...), KOOB, sunshine, cliff jumping, sandhill play, getting rangers called on us, and lots of driving....

Somehow, I am not sure how, the keys to the truck got into Malorie's purse, and they left a day before we did...so Derek and I drove to Beaver, waited an hour, got the keys that Nick Quinn drove down, and then we turned around and drove back to Beaver to give CJ, Tyson, and Kyle the keys and turned around and drove home.  We were in the car from 9:30 a.m. to 10:20ish p.m....but the vacay was fun!

Return to Happy Valley....

Yes my friends....we returned.  But only for a wee bit, and we had good cause.

On the 1st Saturday in August we hiked Timp.  Interesting story.  We left our/my parent's house at midnight.  We were hiking with my dad and some of the kids in the single's ward he is in the Bishopric in....we'll just say there is a reason they are still single and we were about to gouge our eyes out.  So luckily when we got there Derek's mom, Jan, and some of her friends were hiking too, so we decided to hike with them.  Unfortunately, I had a very recent hip injury and even though I had 800 mg of ibuprofin in me it still hurt like the dickens.  (i swear ibuprofin does NOT work for me).  Anyway, I needed to move fast cuz the faster i moved, the less it hurt.  So i booked it.  Got lost, in the dark, by myself.  Ran back to the correct trail. and met my dad and his group at the saddle (they left before us).  I did all that in about 2 hours and 40 minutes.  We got to the saddle at around 4 a.m.  So we huddled, sheltered from the wicked W-I-N-D to keep warm for over an hour.  Then made the final ascent to the top for the sunrise.  It was awesome.

Next reason for returning to Happy Valley.

Derek Graduated on Friday the 13!!!!!!!  DUN DUN DUUUUUUNNNNNN.......luckily nothing bad luckish happened.

It was great because it was ONLY 50 MINUTES LONG!!!!  Mine was 3 hours!  Not fair.
Anyway, he is now a BYU grad.  I am so proud.  Now we are ready for PT School....well, almost....

I brought my robes too so we could take "Graduation Pictures"

Bittersweet

Today I write with a hint of sorrow.

I have been tremendously blessed with the opportunity of doing my internship at West Ridge Academy this summer.  West Ridge is a residential treatment center for youth at-risk.  I won't lie, at first I was really hesitant to work there because quite frankly sometimes i really don't like kids.  They drive me bonkers and all I want to do is slap them across the face.  However, that is no longer the case.  Working with these kids has taught me a number of things that I hope I never loose.

1. Patience
2. Keeping my cool, ALL THE TIME
3. Consistency and how important it is
4. The importance of genuinely caring about others
5. Second, third, and gabillionth chances should ALWAYS be given
6. People truly "Can do hard things"
7. The importance of trust

These are things I learned from the kids.  I also worked with incredible staff.
Shout out #1 goes to John Webb, my supervisor.  He is the most incredible man (other than Derek and my Dad of course).  But seriously.  He is so good at what he does becuase he genuinely cares about the kids and he LOVES his job.  He also just lets me do things.  I am a hands on learner and quite frankly, John baptized me by fire.  He threw me in the snake pit and hoped I lived to see the next day.  (it wasn't really that bad).  But the first time i ran group, I was alone.  No John, No Eli.  Just me.

Who is Eli you say?  Eli is John's wingman.  They are Maverick and Goose.  (Although John acts more like Goose cuz he is much more goofy than Eli.  But that is ok).  Eli is also incredible at what he does and he was the prime example of patience, concern, and understanding with the kids.

My wingman was Betsey.  Bert and Ernie we were called.   She was also an intern, she came about 5 or 6 weeks into my internship and I love her.  Together we tackled some pretty big accomplishments.  Cough Cough...Camp Hanna.  I couldn't have survived without her.  When one of us was falling off our A-game, the other was there to pull us back.  Plus, it's nice to have a girlfriend around.

I have made lifelong friends working at West Ridge.  I am sad to leave.  It was an incredible experience. I learned a lot.  I grew a lot.  Now I hope to share what I have learned with others.  I chose to go into recreation therapy at first because of selfish reasons: I get to play everyday.  But I have learned it is so much more than that.  I am helping people become better everyday.  Sometimes I feel like a failure.  Nothing is getting through to the kids.  Then it clicks and they choose to change and their progress skyrockets.  I have seen this happen again and again.  It is amazing what can be done by simply using recreation and leisure as the modality of therapy.  You do an activity or game and you talk about it.  How can rappelling save your life?  Well, let's talk about back-up systems (rattle off a list 5-10 things long of back-up systems used in rappelling), what are back-up systems in your life?  why do we have them?  how can we establish them?  Etc.

It's Over

I cannot believe it.  Camp Hanna is no more.  Everything I have worked toward in my internship is now over.  The month long camp out is done.  Finished.  I feel as if a giant weight has been taken from my shoulders.  Although my neck muscles are all slightly injured...funny how that happened.  i chose to play stretchy pants with a grown man and two teenage boys...i went flying after the 3rd or 4th fling and hit my head on the ground super hard.  i thought i had a concussion.  but i was fine, my neck is just soar now.

Other than that, i did a LOT of rappelling off the red rock (like 5 or 6 times), played in the pond, took care of teenage boys and their parents (the last day), set up and ran the Hanna Challenge, had a water carnival (we have a GIANT inflatable slide and i hooked the hose to it...it was fun.  Although i never went down it on an inner tube), got made fun of for being a hippie-vegetarian-mormon.  It was fun.  Sometimes stressful.  But fun.

Derek came up for the last two days.  It was fun to have him there.  He helped out a lot.  And held his own really well, because I was running around like a crazy chicken with my head cut off doing stuff.  Another fun guest was Sean Bradly.  Have you heard of him?  I never had.  All I thought was wow, that's the tallest man I've ever seen in my life.  7'6".  Retired Professional Bball player.  Really cool guy.

All in all, Camp Hanna was a success.  I now have girls camp and youth conference planned for the rest of my life.  If you ask me if I'd do it again, I'd say no.  2 weeks is too long for the kids to be in such close proximity with each other.  1 week would be perfect.  But it was fun.

Ps: this is the red rock we rappelled off of.

Wedding Mania

So last week was a blur.
Friday July 23 - my cousin, Bobby's wedding reception, Bountiful, Utah.

Saturday, July 24 - Derek's cousin, Melissa's wedding and reception, Boise, Idaho.

Sunday, July 25 - Derek's dad's wedding and dinner, Las Vegas, Nevada.

It was insane.  Boise was fun.  Derek, Corbin, Tegan, and I just played all day.  The ceremony was lovely. In a cute old church conveniently located in the parking lot of the football stadium....and the reception was awesome.  on the top floor of a business complex with a wrap around balcony.

Dave and Tracy's wedding was beautiful.  They were married in the Hotel Paris in Las Vegas by her Bishop.  The ceremony was beautiful.  The dinner, long, but delicious.

I'm so proud of that face i think i'll crop this picture and give it to my mother for Christmas.

Lots of travel.  I felt like death.  We had early flights every day, which meant getting up 2.5-3 hours earlier than the early flight....not too bad.  but i felt like death when we got home and went to Camp Hanna the next day....
