{Christmas 2012}

We had a wonderfully quiet Christmas this year.  It was low key, with nowhere to scurry off to.  Ryan's Mom & Greg made it back from Williamsburg (which was awesome) to spend Christmas Eve and part of Christmas day with us.  The kids loved having family here to share the holiday with.  We even got a treat.  A light dusting of snow, when we weren't expecting any snow at all.

Christmas Eve we played a rousing game of Apples to Apples.  We decorated sugar cookies to leave out for Santa.  We opened up our pajamas and took some pretty embarrassing pictures under the tree (I am protecting the offending parties by not posting those particular ones).  We read from the scriptures the story of the birth of the Savior.  The kids had fun using our puppets to help tell the story.  The kids ended the night by writing their thank you letters to Santa.  Then finally it was off to bed.

Our eldest child had a hard time sleeping this year.  I think he was up three times between 3am and 6:45am. At 6:45 he finally went downstairs with his sisters and then waited for the rest of us to make it out of bed.  The girls got American Girl dolls.  They were REALLY happy!!  Can't you tell by Lauryn's hair!!  Wyatt got a little iPod shuffle so he can leave Mom's alone.  That kid loves music and listens to it each night while going to bed.  Ayden got laser tag sets (which I didn't get a picture of for some reason) and Legos.  He is pretty easy to please.

By 7:45 all the gifts were opened and we were wading through a sea of wrapping paper and ribbons.  The kids were playing blissfully with their presents and Ryan, I, Margaret and Greg were able to open our gifts in peace.  Then we enjoyed breakfast and sadly had to say goodbye to Grandma and Grandpa.  We really enjoyed spending time with them.

We feel immensely blessed and fortunate this year.  We are happy and healthy and have far more than what we need.  Merry Christmas!!

{Temple Lights}

 We love visiting the temple at Christmas time.  It helps us remember that the real reason for the season is our Savior, Jesus Christ.  This year the kids, especially Ayden and Meysa, were excited to see the lights.  Ayden and Meysa helped put up lights this fall in preparation for the Holiday season.  The picture below is the tree that they helped wrap in lights.

The little guys were excited to find trees that they could blend into.  It's like "Where's Waldo?  The color edition".  Nerds!!  We came home when our toes were frozen and had some hot chocolate to warm up.  We hope you have a very Merry Christmas!!

{Gingerbread town}

Grandma & Grandpa stopped by our house on their way to visit Williamsburg for Christmas, and we roped them into helping us build our Gingerbread town.  It is better to make a town than one house because then everyone gets to have their own home and the fighting stays to a minimum.  I should have timed how long the homes lasted before they were stripped of the decorations and the chinking started to fall apart.  It would have been under 24 hours.  Wyatt was the biggest offender when it came to looting, the little booger.  I guess the memories are what are suppose to last a while, not the houses.  We are excited that Christmas is just around the corner and that we get to spend it with family this year.

{Paul Cardall}

 We love Christmas time.  I know shocker!!  We love the things that we only get to do at Christmas time.  Living where we do, we get to do things and see things that are pretty cool.  Last year the two older kids went to a concert at the Washington D.C. Temple visitor's center.  It was Jenny Oaks Baker, a fantastic violinist.  The kids loved it, so did I.  This year when the schedule came out for this season's concerts we found another one that we really wanted to go to.  It was Paul Cardall.  I love piano/instrumental music and Meysa is taking piano lessons, so I thought it would be the perfect thing.

We got to the visitor's center early and checked out the new renovations that they have been working on.  When we saw that people were getting in line we hopped  in as well and hoped to get a good seat.  We actually got seats in the 2nd row just off center.  The kids and I were excited to be so close.

After a few songs, Mr. Cardall commented on how many kids were in the audience.  Assuming that most of the kids were taking piano lessons he said he wanted to have a couple of them help him write a song on the spot.  The auditorium lights came up a little and he picked Meysa and Lauryn out of the audience.  As the girls were walking up he asked if either one played the piano.  Meysa said yes, she did.  Lauryn said no but she was going to start soon.  Mr. Cardall then asked Meysa if she had a song she would like to play....she said sure.  So she sat down in front of a full auditorium and played her Christmas recital piece, "Deck the Halls", perfectly and without hesitation!!  When she was done, the place erupted in applause.  Mr. Cardall said that what she did took guts, and that she did an amazing job.  The girls then got to the task of picking out a few notes for him to put together a song on the spot.  Of course the song he came up with was amazing.

When it was all over and Paul was bowing he had Meysa and Lauryn stand up again for another round of applause.  Meysa had people stopping her as we were leaving, telling her what a great job she did.  We stayed after just a bit in order to get a good picture with Paul for the record books.  It was a great night and one we won't soon forget.  I think Meysa has decided to stick with piano!!

{Holy Batman, Robin}

Random post.  As I was fixing Lauryn's hair this morning in the bathroom, she excitedly proclaimed..."It's Batman".  Confused I looked around the bathroom expecting to find one of the boy's Batman toys.  What I was not expecting was to find Batman embedded in Lauryn's smile!!  It was a fun and interesting way to start our day!!

{Marshmallows}

I like trying new recipes.  I sometimes feel like I get in a rut with cooking or baking and sometimes it is nice to break out of that.  I know no better way to do just that, than by trying something new.  I found on Pinterest a recipe for homemade marshmallows that went along with some decadent hot chocolate (http://www.browniepointsblog.com/2006/04/15/basic-vanilla-marshmallows/).  Now if I am being honest I am not much of a marshmallow fan.  Just to eat them straight or even for that matter on s'mores, but I thought it would be fun to know how to make them...and to add them to some delicious hot chocolate, well I am game!!

The recipe was way easier than I initially thought it would be.  The one thing that you definitely need is a candy thermometer, but don't let that scare you off.  It was a super simple recipe and it turned out great.  I chose to dip them in chocolate to then add to some Hot chocolate packets for the kids teachers for Christmas.  The kids have tried one and they said they were awesome!!  I'd say that is a win-win.  I got to try a new recipe...that worked and the kids enjoyed the results!!

{Arlington}

Yesterday, Ryan and the youth of our church got a unique opportunity to go and give service at Arlington National Cemetery.  Every year at this time of year a large number of people turn out at Arlington to lay wreaths on each and every grave.  Our family had planned on going as a family but the kids and I ended up being sick (boo), so Ryan went by himself.  These are pictures that he took with his cell phone so we could at least see how neat it turned out to be.  We plan on going again next year with our kids.  Hopefully we are healthy and can experience it as a family!!

{Goodies...Check}

The Holidays aren't the Holidays without goodies.  I haven't always made goodies to share with our friends and neighbors each year.  It is kinda hit and miss for me.  But this year I am on top of things for once and we will be delivering these goodie bags tonight as a family!!

Each year growing up we made Christmas candy, specifically my Grandma Brown's caramels.  The smell of them makes me think of Christmas.  It isn't really Christmas unless I make up a batch.  My own little family is split on whether they like caramels, so I usually make them to get it out of my system and then gift the majority of them to friends so I don't eat them all.

Meysa helped me wrap up a double batch of these wonderful little nuggets last night.  I remember doing that with my mom too.  Perhaps caramels will come to mean Christmas to Meysa as well.  Next year I will teach her how to make them, not just wrap them.  Passing the tradition onto yet another generation.

{Christmas is...}

(Ayden wrote this and slipped it under my door the other night.  Thought it was great and wanted to share.)

picture from lds.org

Christmas is....
      family, service, love and Jesus Christ.
Christmas is family.  During this time of the year the family can read scripture stories that help them learn what the true meaning of Christmas is.  It's not the presents, or the tree, or the pretty decorations.  It's about the birth of Jesus Christ.
Christmas is service.  We can be of service when we see people that might need help.
Christmas is Love.  Love is when we can show appreciation towards our family, friends and neighbors.
Christmas is Jesus Christ.  He is the most important part of Christmas.  He was sent to earth to gain a body and to die for us so that we can live with Heavenly Father again someday.

By:  Ayden

It is good to remember the real reason for the Season.  Ayden helped me this year do just that.  I am very thankful for him and his testimony of the Savior.

{Slacker and Christmas trees}

As you can see, blogging hasn't been on the top of my list.  Sorry Dad!!  I have some catching up to do, so I might as well do that and tell you about our adventure Christmas tree hunting.

Not long after I posted pics on Meysa's birthday we celebrated a quiet Thanksgiving.  It was just our family this year.  It was low key.  I cooked a small turkey and only had a few sides and not the 25 sides that we normally do when we have company over.  I made only two pies and no appetizers.  We sat down for dinner and 15 minutes later all the kids were done and has escaped to the other parts of the house.  We did at least say what we were thankful for.  That counts doesn't it?  There were football games on and games to played.  I think I got a small nap once the tryptophan kicked in.

The next day, Black Friday, I ventured out in the afternoon (I am not crazy enough to head out in the morning)to do some shopping by myself.  I got several things done and it felt good to get a head start on Christmas gifts.

After Thanksgiving, we have been busy with the everyday stuff.  Ryan is finally moving forward with his research project.  It has only taken 10 weeks to get to this point.  Talk about frustrating for him.

Ayden is plugging along in school.  He and a few other kids from our ward decided to put together a "band" to play at our Ward Christmas party.  They have been practicing for several weeks now and tomorrow night we get to see how they all sound together.  It is an interesting collection of instruments.  A trumpet, clarinet, harp, cello, and piano.  I'll let ya know how it goes!!

Meysa must have hit a hormonal milestone as well as a birthday recently.  She has been "super fun"!!  Just two nights ago she had a meltdown because she couldn't draw stars as well as Ryan could.  She is submitting a drawing to be considered for the yearbook cover for her school.  It has stars on it and she only has until Tuesday to do it and apparently the world was crashing down around her.  Oh, yeah and it was 9:30 at night.  When the irrational starting spewing from her mouth I had to walk out.  Ryan saved the day and talked Meysa off the ledge.

This happened after a meltdown from Ayden (talk about a great night).  He has dishes this week and decided that he should shove all the dishes that he could into the dishwasher, so there was less to handwash.  Since he had leftover dishes from the night before only about half should have been put into the dishwasher.  That stunt earned him another week of dishes and a sink full of dishes to hand wash!!  Am I ready for teenagers? I honestly question it!!

Lauryn is her unique little self.  She is so boisterous (read loud) and creative.  For the first time since we have had kids in school, we had to do retakes for pictures.  Lauryn brought her pictures home and she looked possessed!!  Really with one eye bigger than the other and her head titled slightly.  She said the guy took her picture before she was ready!!  So hopefully take two went better than take one.  She is finished with her art class through the Parks and Rec.  She loved it and wants to take the next one as well.  That really is her niche in life.

Wyatt is keeping me in line.  Everyday at 9am sharp he calls me to start Preschool.  He loves it and is already starting to read small words.  He is constantly asking me how to spell words that he is wanting to write down.  He keeps us laughing as well.  A few Sundays ago I had asked Ayden to help Wyatt put his shoes on so we could leave for church.  Ayden was struggling a bit to get them on and Wyatt, apparently exasperated by the lack of progress, sighed and said "this is ridonkolus"!!  We busted up and I saved Ayden from any further humiliation from his baby brother!!  It is now a running joke in the family!!  We have several of those and most of them come from Wyatt!!

Alright, now that we are caught up on everyone, let's get to Christmas trees.  Last year we settled for a pre-cut tree from a nursery close to our house.  It was nice but frankly there isn't anything better than heading out into the wilderness (or tree farm) to cut down your own tree.  So this year I did some investigating and found a pretty close farm that had u-cut trees.  Our only free weekend was last Saturday so we took the opportunity to go and forage for our Christmas tree.

Once we found "the one" the men settled in for the hard work of sawing it down.  Meysa wanted in on the action as well though.  Meysa is a lot like I was at her age.  I always felt that if the boys could something, well then so could I.  For Meysa, that meant getting a couple of passes of the saw right along with the boys.  Lauryn and Wyatt were busy picking up weeds and being silly.  I think Silly should have been Lauryn's middle name.  She is a ninny!!

Once the tree had been cut, the men hauled it over to a bundling station where some nice guys trimmed the bottom, shook the tree and then bundled and strapped it to our car.  I guess you don't really find those guys in the real woods, but the experience was close enough!!  As we were in line waiting for our turn to get things trimmed up we took some pictures of the kids on this nice little setup they had.  I think Lauryn must be proud of the fact that she is missing some teeth, every picture lately has that same look.

So there you have it, a catch up.  I have all my Christmas cards sent, packages sent and almost all the shopping done.  My holiday baking will be next week and then hopefully I can relax the last week before Christmas and just enjoy things.  Our family finished reading The Book of Mormon this year and we are also enjoying reading the 24 days of Christmas each night.  It really is the simple things that make the season merry and bright.
