Trents 23rd Birthday!
Well yesterday was Trent's birthday, and he must be getting old already because he just wanted to stay at home. He asked me to make him lasagna for dinner. It turned out edible so that went well. It was my first time making it, so of course I kept calling my mom. He didn't want any gifts either. I asked him what he wanted and he said money so that he could go buy tools! I guess I can't pick those out. I did manage to sneak in a pair of new basketball shoes. Trent's are so old and nasty. He has had them since his sophomore year in high school...they've got to go! So, anyway, we just stayed home and watched movies. Trent is already getting lame in his age...so I can tell our future is bright! :)
Simulation Day!
Well, today I had a family of four scheduled, as an assignment for clinical simulation(it is supposed to prepare you for the real world and seeing multiple patients everyday). So, this morning I saw a dad and son, I ended up giving the dad to Gina because hers cancelled. So the morning went well. Then, this afternoon the mom and other son came. He had the grossest mouth, he had braces and they had his breakfast, lunch, and dinner in them. I know I did terribly on him, but what do ya do. He really grossed me out pretty bad, he had nasty breath and he didn't care how much I told him to brush, I know he won't do it. Anyway, so I was supposed to hurry and finish with him and then finish his mom. Nay Nay! This was not going to happen, after cleaning his mouth I only had about 30 minutes to finish his mom, who turned out to be a class 2. So I had to reschedule her for later. Anyway, the simulation day was stressful, and if the real world is as stressful as that, I am doomed!
Just Pull 'Em
Well, today started out just great. I had an easy class 5 patient come in. I took care of an exam on her, and got her done. Then came the afternoon patient! She was in her mid 50's, and she had a billion diseases and a billion medications...no joke. She took some meds just to help the side effects of other meds. So anyway, some of her diseases included parkinsons, crohns disease, fibromyalgia, restless legs syndrome, depression, and she is menopausal! Hooray me! She had 20 medications, all of which I had to look up in a drug handbook and write down any dental contraindications. So, by the time I did all that and looked in her mouth I discovered she hadn't been for a cleaning in 10 years. Her gums were bleeding just by looking at them! So, then there were all of these complications with getting her numb, so by the time I started scaling it was 2:30, she had been there for 2 hours already and I hadn't done anything! I don't know how I did it, but I got her all done by 3:30 and she was a class three! Wahhoo Me! But, then I found out that the only reason she was getting her teeth cleaned was because she has an appointment next week to get full mouth extractions and dentures! So, all that hassle and she's just going to get them pulled!!
Big Blow
Well, after a very relaxing weekend of playing with friends and going out to dinner with my hubby, I had to wake up today and go to school. This, however, was not the worst part of the day. When I got to school I discovered it was time to register for the Dental Hygiene Board exams. This is a series of three tests clinical, anesthesia, and written. Each are taken on different days and consist of many different criteria. It is required for all students hoping to have a degree and license in Dental Hygiene. So, the low blow of the day was paying for these blasted tests. A whopping $1200 bucks! How do these people sleep at night! We've already had to pay for school!!?! This big kicker is....if I don't pass, I have to pay to retake them again! Hooray!?
Not off to a good start!
We're back to school! I don't know if that should have an exclamation or not. It was the first day of clinic today, and I had two patients cancel on me last night. So, as a last ditch effort I called my father-in-law and he came in this morning. It was nice to work on someone easy to start the semester, and I got done very quickly. However, I am already having anxiety that I won't find the patients that I need. The patients that cancelled on me today, were class 4's, which I need desperately(since they are so hard to find). I have discovered the need for some goals in my progression this semester. I want to gain a better ability to discuss disease and home care with patients. I also want to improve my time. In that area I am off to a good start, I got Larry done in about 50 minutes all together. Anyway, this afternoon I am seeing my mockboard patient...wish me luck!
Happy 2008!
For the last 8 years my girlfriends(about10 of us) have had an annual tradition of going to a chick flick and lunch on New Years Eve. This year was no different. We chose to go to Johnny Carino's for lunch and the movie we chose was called P.S. I LOVE YOU. Well, I don't know if any of you have seen this movie yet, but if not, don't! It is not a horrible show, in my opinion, however. The storyline, of which I was completely unaware, is that a very young woman loses her husband to a brain tumor. The film is about her coping the year after his death. Ya!! I cryed my eyes out the entire time. I think my friends would have rather me leave because I was sobbing! Like I needed to watch a movie about that! I can see it in my own family everyday! So anyway, I left the theatre with a headache from crying too much!
Moving on, to celebrate the New Year, my aunt and uncle decided to have my family over to their house to play games and hang out. Trent and I had a great time, although we lost the game. It was fun to be with our family to ring in the New Year. We had a sparkling cider toast and went outside to make some noise!
These are my parents!
The Bourne Series!
Ok, so we are the laziest people ever. And for the last 3 nights we have done nothing but sit in bed with our pj's on and watch movies. Trent got the Bourne series for Christmas and I had never seen any of them so we had to start at the beginning. We watched the first one, The Bourne Identity, on Friday night. The second, The Bourne Supremacy on Saturday, and the third, The Bourne Ultimatum, on Sunday night. I love these movies! They are great because guys love them, and I don't know about any of you, but I think Matt Damon is pretty nice to look at.
So anyway, we are nerdy and took pics of ourselves in pj's with the movies. Ya'll said you wanted to see more pics of us and what we do...
