A Clustered Bar Chart in Power BI is used to compare multiple values across different categories using grouped horizontal bars.

Formatting a Clustered Bar Chart
After creating a Clustered Bar Chart, formatting options can be used to enhance its appearance. In this example, Employee Name is placed on the Y-axis, while Salary and Bonus are used as values. Power BI offers two main formatting categories:
- Visual Formatting: Controls the appearance of the chart, including colors, labels, axes and titles.
- General Formatting: Manages properties such as size, position, tooltips and other visual settings.

Visual Formatting
Visual formatting comprises eight options i.e. Y-axis, X-axis, Legend, grid line, zoom slider, bars and data labels.

Y-Axis
The Y-axis displays category labels in the chart. It allows customization of label appearance and axis titles.
Step 1 : Format Y-Axis Labels
Click on the Y-Axis option and select Values to customize the category labels displayed on the chart. You can modify properties such as font style, text size and color to improve the appearance of the labels.

Step 2: Customize the Y-Axis Title
Click on the Title option to format the Y-axis title. You can customize the title text, font, size and color. For example, changing the title color updates the appearance of the Employee Name title in the chart.

X-Axis
The X-axis displays the numerical values represented in the chart and helps measure the length of the bars.
Step 1: Configure the X-Axis Range
Click on the X-Axis option and select Range to define the minimum and maximum values displayed on the axis. You can also apply a logarithmic scale or invert the axis range when required.

Step 2: Format X-Axis Values
Click on the Values option to customize the appearance of X-axis labels. You can modify properties such as font style, text size, color and display units (for example, thousands or millions).

Step 3: Customize the X-Axis Title
Click on the Title option to format the X-axis title. You can change the title text, font, size and color to match the overall design of the chart.

Legends
It help group data into categories for easier comparison and analysis. In this example, the Department field is added as a legend after removing the Bonus field from the chart
Step 1: Format Legend Text and Title
Click on the Legend option to access formatting settings. You can customize the legend text, font size, color and title to improve readability and presentation.

Step 2: Change Legend Position
Use the Options setting to change the position of the legend within the chart. Power BI provides multiple placement options such as Top Center, Bottom Left and Top Left. By default, the legend is positioned at the Top Left.

Gridlines
It help improve chart readability by providing visual reference points for comparing values across categories.
Step 1: Customize Gridlines
Click on the Gridlines option and select Vertical to customize the appearance of gridlines. You can change their style, color and thickness.

Step 2: Change Gridline Style
Use the Style option to choose different gridline patterns, such as solid or dashed.

Step 3: Show or Hide Gridlines
Turn off the Vertical gridline toggle to remove gridlines from the chart.

Zoom Slider
The Zoom Slider allows users to focus on a specific range of values by increasing or decreasing the visible range of the X-axis.
Step 1: Enable the Zoom Slider
Click on the Zoom Slider option to enable it on the chart. You can also configure Slider Labels to display value markers and Slider Tooltips to show numeric values while adjusting the slider.

Step 2: Analyze Data Using the Slider
Use the slider to zoom in or out and focus on specific value ranges, making it easier to analyze the chart in detail.

Bars
Bars represent the values of each category in the Clustered Bar Chart.
- Color: Customize the appearance of bars by changing their colors
- Spacing: Adjust the gap between bars to improve readability and presentation

Data Labels
Data Labels display values directly on the bars, making it easier to interpret the chart.
- Apply Settings To: Apply formatting to specific legend groups
- Options: Adjust the position of data labels
- Values: Customize label font, size and color
- Background: Modify the background appearance of data labels

General Formatting
It provides options to customize the overall appearance and behavior of the visualization.

Property
This option allows you to manage the size and position of the chart on the report canvas.
- Size: Resize the visualization
- Position: Change the chart's placement
- Advanced: Configure additional settings such as layer order

Title
The Title option is used to add and customize a heading for the chart.
Step 1: Add a Chart Title
Enable the title and enter the required text. You can also customize the font, size and style of the title.

Step 2: Customize Title Appearance
Modify the text color and other formatting options to match the overall design of the report.

Effects
The Effects option enhances the visual appearance of the chart.
- Background: Add a background color
- Visual Border: Display a border around the chart
- Shadow: Apply a shadow effect to the visualization

Select a background color to improve the visual appearance of the chart.

Header Icons
Header Icons are displayed at the top of the visualization and provide quick access to actions such as filtering and additional options.
