Personally I prefer the doom cover.

When I was still mucking about with files (before the death of my NAS), I put them into nested folders by genre. Artists that don’t fit into any prevailing genre, had their own separate folders if I had more than a little of their music.

I now use my notes app for the music collection, with links to online services. It’s an outliner, so I still have the hierarchical structure as the basis — it’s more involved now, with top-level sections like ‘favorites’, ‘music from my childhood’, etc. Basically, it’s organized by the criteria that I use when I’m looking for an artist, album, or tunes (just like other notes are tailored to me looking for them). But also, the app allows tags for the notes, so I can list e.g. metal records from the entire collection. Can’t really do that in the filesystem unless you put something like ‘#metal’ in the artist/album directory names, or use a file manager that can read id3 tags, like Total Commander.

MacOS supports tagging for files, but it’s not portable between platforms, the tags might not be preserved by some apps when copying files, and idk actually how to search by the tags.

Not sure if you really mean Four Tet’s tracks in particular, but vaporwave and witch-house used odd unicode in names since mid-2000s and particularly early 2010s.

I heard that back in the 50s kind of era people would be releasing “cover” versions of songs that were still in the charts.

To add to my previous comment: afaik covers could actually be released before the ‘originals’, because the earlier-recorded song was stuck somewhere in the pipeline, and meanwhile the songwriter shopped the song around to different singers whose labels turned out to be quicker with the release.

Not quite the same, but: Carl Perkins’ ‘Blue Suede Shoes’ was recorded in December 1955 and released in January 1956, while Elvis Presley’s version was recorded in January 1956 but not released until August 31. This thankfully preserved the order, but the story could be different if the labels had a different sense of urgency.

That happens pretty often.

I just realized that one of the oddest interpretations of classical music I know, ‘Gnossienne in Asia Minor’ by Forgotten Fish Memory Orchestra, was uploaded by an account named ‘harrypartch’. For better or worse, I’m not into mid-twentieth-century composers that much, but this does raise my interest considerably.

It seems to be the fashion in the past decade to make 3D animation that looks vaguely 2D: from anime and ‘RWBY’ to this weird technique made to better control the head’s appearance with wide virtual lenses and such.

Curiously, AC-bu were making 2D animation for a long time, but ‘New Tribe’ translates their peculiar style into 3D very well.

The track is just not very fit for the jazz genre, since it’s mostly rather monotone both in the instrumental and vocal parts. I guess one could make it explicitly chill protracted minimal jazz, but that’s not what’s done here.

Player’s (Amon Tobin’s) ‘Angel of Theft’ is better just because it adds stuff so it certainly doesn’t need more.

It definitely has to do with quality. Firstly, Nintendo distinguished themselves from the competition starting with the NES through quality control for the software titles, resurrecting the entire US market after tons of shovelware saturated it in 1983-85. By the time of the 16-bit consoles, Sega specifically profited off of allowing stuff that Nintendo wouldn’t, like more violent games. Nintendo’s legacy of quality family-friendly titles is pretty damn obvious, and when one is buying their console, they’s also buying into this ecosystem, knowing that they’ll have a new Mario Kart game to play with friends. And, of course, knowing that the friends are likely to be familiar with Mario Kart.

Secondly, you’d do better by citing any examples of indie devs providing hardware and software of equal quality and innovation to Nintendo’s, instead of empty statements. For example, Playdate is an interesting handheld console that definitely looks well-made, and is designed by Teenage Engineering known for music gear like synths. It has a crank on the side, and aside from that, a d-pad and four buttons, a black-and-white screen (not grayscale) with 400×240 pixels, a 168 MHz CPU and 16 MB of RAM. It costs 230$ (originally 180$) with twenty-four games, and 40$ for twenty-four more. I bet most of the games are retro stuff like platformers. Do I admire Teenage Engineering’s output? Oh yeah. Would I buy this if I had 270 spare bucks for a handheld console? Fuck no.

I also had an R35S gifted to me by someone more than a bit into emulation handhelds. It has way better specs than Playdate and okayish quality of the inputs. Only, the battery went fully and irreparably dead after a year of it lying around, and moreover, the battery may be pierced by the screws holding the case in place when the battery expands with age, leading to a fire.

Guess what my primary handheld emulation device is? A PlayStation Vita gifted to me earlier by the same person. Reportedly it can lie about for months with a game paused, draining barely any battery charge.

As for Gruuthaagy, I asked because it’s a pretty obscure Croatian noise artist, whom I first discovered via torrents. For a long time, he was nowhere else to be found except in pirate uploads on YouTube — now he’s also on Bandcamp. Similarly, YouTube is the sole service where some other records are present, especially for free.

If I recall correctly, you mostly have records locally. But, as a victim of multiple failures of physical media, I would recommend keeping a list of all those records — and then you can conveniently link them to online services so as not to fiddle with the local records each time. For this purpose, I link my notes to Bandcamp and YouTube in that order of preference.

I’ve never owned a Nintendo device aside from a Chinese NES clone, and I’m still jealous of what they’ve done. If you aren’t, you’re severely lacking the appreciation of what gaming devices could do and how Nintendo strayed out of the trodden path time and again.
