My NAS is starting to act up and I have no idea what I’m going to do. I’ve got it all backed up but it’s basically deep cold storage (hard drive at a friend’s house in a different state). When it goes I’m cooked.
Bought 128 gb DDR4 and a 7900 XT… that system quite literally sits in my basement as my main driver is a Linux laptop with an external monitor. So busy with work and school that gaming took a backseat.
I definitely failed on that end. Lol. I got like two 1tb nvme’s before prices went mad and I stupidly decided to build a media server. That’s another machine that currently sits unused… Mostly because it’s empty. Lol. One nvme is in my laptop. The other went to my daughter.
No no pairs are good, using a ram without its store bought pair is bad. I don’t know enough about ASRock boards to give a specific answer but Ram that’s sold in pairs generally doesn’t work as well individually because modern boards apparently divide work between them in specific ways.
I need to read about how our boards (mine’s b550m) work regarding that but I’ll dm you whatever I find
Just decided to reply in case anyone else doesn’t know. Tom’s Hardware and a few different mb manufacturer websites say motherboards opt for Dual Channel ram management, if you have an uneven number it will still use them all on a single channel mode which is slower but not as badly as if you had mixed RAM parts
I can’t quite figure out the timeline of the jobs I’ve had. Memories of things that happened on those jobs don’t line up with when I think I was on the jobs. I feel like I have the order all mixed up.

My friend always had our hand me down pc’s and parts. One day he texted me, saying he wants to build his own pc and send me some infos. I said it looks fine and all. He asked if he should wait for black friday. I told him no, because we’re not in amerikkka and it doesn’t make a big difference if all.
I thought i should build a new pc too, because mine was just as outdated, and bought my parts. By the time i have ordered and picked them up, the guy behind the counter was already like: ufff holy shit, saved some mobey there huh?
I know right! Honnestly the 32gb of ddr3, 4790k and a new graphics card (switched from a 970 to a rx7600 is got for cheap) is still surprisingly capable of running games.
I hate myself for thinking that “no, I don’t need an upgrade just because, I’m fine with what I have” one year ago (and I was also hesitant because of the dying CPUs on AM5). 32 ain’t cutting it for me any more, I’m aiming for 96 or 128, but definitely not before this whole thing blows over.
Before the rampocolypse I replaced 2x32GB sticks in my home server with 2x64GB sticks. I recently found I kept those 2x32GB sticks so I have 64GB of RAM sitting in my closet. I’m not sure if I should sell, or build something around that because I already have the most expensive piece now.
I’m currently in the middle of building a ITX machine for my partner so she can play games with me. Ran into a mate of mine the other night who due to a mix up at the retailer had a spare 16gb kit of brand new DDR5-5200 and was looking at selling it on Marketplace. He fucking hates Meta (good bloke) and said for mates rates he’d give it to me for AUD $200 just so he didn’t have to reinstall Facebook.
Fucking sold. Same kit is currently “on special” for $369 on the site he bought it from. Prices are fucked.
If you would stop calling them chicks and maybe start treating everyone with a minimum of basic respect you might encounter many more nice people through gaming.
Lucky me bought 768GB shortly before it went up. For my server and gaming-rig. Now the ram alone would nearly have paid the whole 2 PCs. Jeez. Fuck you all.

Yeah a drive failure is my biggest worry now. 12TB drives aren’t cheap. Luckily I got an extra when prices started going up as a warm backup.
I have a backup R740 that I got in case I needed the extra capacity. It’s my donor now, or could be my retirement plan since it has 256GB in it.

The pc (server) was used, and the seller asked 100$ to double it from 128 GB to 256 GB.
More space for CFD and path tracing, and for personnal projects. Also it’s fun to install games to a ramdisk for a laugh.
…and to finally install all the Cities Skylines and Rimworld mods.

I still have 32 GB of DDR in my drawer from when I upgraded to 64. I am too afraid to sell it because my current ram might break.

Make sure to get the old one replaced if it’s still under warranty.
