1·6 days agoMy kitchen has a little dining table that’s physically attached to the wall, and on the other side of that wall is the air conditioner closet. Anything you put on the table will quiver like that. Perhaps it’s something like that? That said, I live in a place without earthquakes and have my whole life so I don’t know what I’m talking about.

Also I have no idea what the Tesseract block list is. I’ve heard it mentioned a few times recently and clearly there’s something happening that I missed.

10·7 days agoI think I came up with a new (at least to me) way of explaining what LLMs actually do. You know how when you’re listening to a song you haven’t heard before, you can normally hum along even though you don’t actually know it. You can do this because you’ve heard so much music before, and there are just patterns and such that you begin to intuit. That’s all that’s happening, just in a less beautiful way. Now I feel kind of bad bringing music into this.
Bump. No one I know in person can help at all. My aunt’s car was recently totaled so she’s replacing that. I really need to get some food.

2·10 days agoTurns out those types of people just love that shit. I definitely don’t work a desk job, and they still throw us all in a room every couple months and lie to us about being a family.

4·21 days agoI very much considered joining that. I love language, but have never fully learned a second. The thought of learning another alphabet is daunting, when I already know most of the Russian one. I’m turning 35 and the elasticity isn’t what it once was. My three languages of choice would be Russian, Chinese (Mandarin? I’m the least educated here), and Arabic. They all require a new alphabet. Irish (Gaelic?) is the fourth, but the first three I feel have the most utility. Irish is one I am drawn to by some misguided cultural nonsense. I’m adopted. Idk who I come from. But I’m a white guy with a red beard and red highlights, I know I have some Cherokee ( a lot of us in the southeast of the US do) and that’s it. And that’s 1/8 at most. But my bio father’s family is from Appalachia. So whether it’s warranted or not, I feel a pull to Irish culture.

10·21 days agoFirst of all I’d like to thank anyone who responds to my posts only to get ghosted on any follow-up. This shit messes with my anxiety. I think y’all ca understand that.
Okay here’s the question of the week. Last one was bikes.
Good Russian learning resources? I took on the task of learning Russian like 18 years ago, an got so far as to be able to transliterate most of the alphabet. I forget some of the letters I get very frustrated watching some people play GeoGuessr because the sign will say Yekaterinburg 50km but it’s in Cyrillic so they can’t read it and just pick two random ass points in Russia.
Anyone have good resources? I was talking to a friend about all of this and realized I’d really like to continue learning the language.
Yes! It’s pretty interesting. I would definitely try an “old” banana but suspect I wouldn’t like them much.
You were, in fact, tasting the salt. The prevailing theory is once the blood hits the lungs, the extra molecules end up out in your lungs and you exhale them, causing you to taste it. I’m not sure I vibe with that theory. But I’m no scientist. I’d wager, though, that the blood passing the mucus membranes in your nose and throat causes the taste. But apparently even the medical establishment hasn’t figured this out yet.
I’m judging you only for liking banana flavored anything. Banana are great. Banana flavoring, not so much.
IV drug use
I’m an ex IV drug user. It’s been years so I may not remember the order. But when you inject (at least in the arm) you feel it in your stomach, then throat, then brain. You’ll get a lil queasy feeling, then you’ll taste something in the back of your mouth. Sometimes it’s the drug, sometimes it’s just metallic or weird. But you notice it. And then the hit… Hits. It’s fucking fascinating. Injecting molly is like boarding a rocket ship, and those little feelings gave you a rhythm. Push > stomach - hand the needle off (for safety, you don’t have time to cap and store that thing) > throat - lay down > head - congrats you’re rolling face in 10 seconds flat and in about a minute or two you can probably open your eyes without throwing up.
Edit: added spoiler and CW

31·23 days agoThat really is unfortunate and shitty of them. My material conditions have improved (modestly) so that I rarely need to fall back on a mutual aid request anymore, but there have definitely been times I’ve gone to post for something that maybe wasn’t critical, saw one of these posts, and decided my need was too trivial to dilute the donor pool.

So you’re saying that when I drink monster energy and my pee smells funny, it’s because there was literally monster energy in my veins? Would my blood smell like coffee, too, if I bled after drinking coffee?

4·23 days agoScrolling through the account’s comments, I’d swear it’s someone hitting whatever the next suggested word on their phone keyboard is. So it’s either a bit, or a bot, or both. I’m going with probably both. Though it does use Hexbear emoji, so idk. Maybe an llm trained on Hexbear posts?

That’s pretty much what Oscar Wilde did. I’m no expert, so hopefully this isn’t the part where someone tells me he was awful… Hides
