Machu Picchu is an Inca settlement located in the High Andes of Peru in the Urubamba Valley, north of Cuzco. The site, perched high above the Urubamba river, has been variously described as a fortress, imperial retreat and ceremonial precinct. It was founded by Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui in c. 1450 CE, had capacity for around 1,000 residents at its peak, and ranked amongst the most sacred of all sites for the Inca. Following the collapse of the Inca empire, Machu Picchu was abandoned and forgotten, only to be rediscovered in 1911 CE by the explorer Hiram Bingham. Machu Picchu is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
Purpose
Machu Picchu (meaning ‘old hill’) was an imperial estate founded by and belonging to Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui, the Inca ruler, in the mid-15th century CE. The ownership of the site was later passed to Pachacuti’s successors. On its rediscovery by the explorer Hiram Bingham in 1911 CE (although local residents in the valley had always known of the site’s existence) it was claimed as the last capital of the Incas. However, this proved to be untrue when the actual final capital was discovered at Vilcabamba, further downstream in the Urubamba Valley.
Another hypothesis concerning the site posed by early historians was that Machu Picchu was a fortress and the strong walls, large towers, and dry moats were cited in support of this theory. The need for fortification perhaps sprang from a series of severe droughts which made the competition for resources fierce. This would also explain why the site was not occupied for very long as when the water situation improved the necessity for such citadel sites declined.
Once again though, further study has revealed that most of the architecture was designed for religious purposes and the fortifications may well have been put in place to ensure only a select few could enter this sacred site. In further support of this interpretation, a road was discovered which linked the site to several residential settlements dotted along the valley. The most likely purpose of Machu Picchu, then, was as a sacred site, probably to the sun god Inti and with the additional purpose of reminding the recently conquered local population of the power and might of Pachacuti and the Inca empire centred at its capital Cuzco.
The site was abandoned by the Inca shortly before Pizarro and the Spanish conquistadors arrived. The invaders never reached Machu Picchu, though, and the site would remain unknown to the wider world for 400 years.

I’m technically no longer overweight and I can also bench more than my bodyweight for reps now!
Incredible.
A few episodes into rewatching The X-files and they’ve already managed to do:
War on Terror foreshadowing stuff as in evil terrorist agents from the middle east in the midst of innocent usaians.
A misunderstood tech genius in true Suckerberg/Melon style, complete with the look of wearing only sweat pants and not brushing hair ever.
A sentient evil AI programmed by said benevolent nerd billionaire.
A smol bean defence contractor who is only looking out for their employees.
Human nature as “we are just out to get each other, always have been”. Provided by the antropologist when they come across the jersey devil.
A liberal will go to the funeral of someone who lives in a red state and died in a natural disaster just to proclaim that “elections have consequences”
The amount of free publicity the DSA is getting right now is so funny. Completely ignored before outside of mentions of “the squad”, now they are reporting breathlessly on the various caucuses in detail.
The positions within the DSA are quite tame, so
quoting “we want a classless society” as though it’s equivalent to trump saying he wants to deport everyone is really just good free advertising.I loved the texture of steamed breads/buns so much, theyre so fluffy and the skin that forms feels so nice

tabletop rpg/“i’m begging you to play another game” discourse: i always really wanted to try more RPG systems than i have! but my back-in-the-day group was really hard to get together for our long-running d&d campaign as is, combined with being the forever GM and not learning games very well just by reading the rules. and right now i’ve got my hands full drafting my silly fantasy intrigue 5e fork and running my home game in that incomplete ass system.
really do want to try Delta Green and/or Call of Cthulhu sometime soon though! i think i’m most drawn to narrative-focused-but-traditionally-structured games with big, granular skill lists like CoC/other d100 games and Vampire the Masquerade type beats. (context for non-tabletop rpg nerds, traditional or “trad” games are your classic “GM is the main author of the World and tries to embody/roleplay the world, Players embody/roleplay a character in that world, rules provide the bounds/limitations of that world” style games, as opposed to e.g. Narrativist/Story Games where there’s typically more collaborative world building, codified “narrative moves” which are kinda meta and try to enforce a specific genre/tone, and stereotypically have a bit more of a zoomed out Writer’s Room type of feel)
outside of the Trad RPG realm i’ve also always wanted to try Blades in the Dark though! there’s just too many games and not enough time/spoons/social battery, especially as someone who is really mostly only interested in in-person play.
Science still can’t answer why I’m soo sleepy eepy

Someone recommended me a news/political podcast because i’m “a left wing guy” and half an episode in and one of the hosts has stated and proven that they don’t understand what Supply and Demand means and the other host has stated that socialism is when the government invests to increase supply.
One of these people is an accountant who also does a podcast educating people about finance. This might be a really silly question to ask, but why does every job I apply to need my SSN? Is it really necessary that I have to give them that information for a fast food job?
Siemens, one of the biggest industrialists and ‘financial kings’ in Germany, told the Reichstag on June 7, 1900, that ‘the one-pound share is the basis of British imperialism.’ This merchant has a much deeper and more ‘Marxian’ understanding of imperialism than a certain disreputable writer, generally held to be one of the founders of Russian Marxism, who believes that imperialism is a bad habit of a certain nation. …
Okay I’ll bite, I forfeit my credentials, who is Lenin’s certain disreputable writer here?
Reading Lenin talk about the banks for pages and pages is sometimes hard to focus on but worth it.
Oh, this water is contaminated with lead? Sorry, the only ppb I care about is on a farm covered is excrement
I’ve heard that… the rules that govern this world are all essentially curses
My work homie is off this week and I am feeling it. We split the sous chef/evil vizier real power behind the throne role between us where he handles admin bullshit like food costing and the packaging ordering and prefers hanging in the back corner working on prep and making pastas. I run service and make sure everything is prepped and stocked and do a second glance at his orders. This weekend ive got our two weakest guys by a wide margin and I dont have a second guy to take some of that off me. One guy is older, been there a while and moved from dish to cook cause someone left around the time his visa was legit again and that was the open position. He’s an older phillipino dudes and was imprisoned under Dutuerte, he’d be dead if a friend of his from school who was in the military didn’t recognize his name and he’s one of the nicest people ever, i am happy enough to carry him through but in the moment to moment, dude is just fucking awful at being organized. He’ll make 2 pizzas for 2 different orders, put em in the oven and then make the rest, for reasons I cant fathom and its been pulling teeth getting him to stop. He stretches a dough, builds a full pizza and then does the next one, you stretche all the dough you need, make em all and then send em all. I’m doing expo and he’s making puzzles for me and how little of the menu he’s memorized and how many mods he misses are a bit much, he requires supervision. Which sucks cause the other guy is new, 38 year old white dude who used to skateboard and do lots of mushrooms and now just plays a lot of video games. Like a pre trump joe rogan guy. Half hippie half bro, red hot chilli peppers guy. He seems to think he knows what he’s doing a LOT more than he does and when I tell him he’s doing something wrong he’ll argue about it. He’ll explain why he’s doing something stupid like say, cutting Brussel sprouts when there is already a giant bin full of cut ones ans we dont use em fast instead of stocking the line and getting ready for service like I fucking told him to. He started earlier than me today and had a long shift so I was advising him to take a good long break and eat something pretty much since coming in at 3. Dude waited until 5:15 and then started slowly cooking his own food. He felt the prep list had to be finished before he could go. He was in the way of me finishing the list cause I can work circles around either of these people. It takes me 15 minutes to bang out what takes either of them close to an hour, I don’t need the help and if I did im not too proud to say so. 5he chef popped in for a bit cause we’re down a guy on a Saturday and he figured he’d see if we were in the weeds. We werent, it was a slow night and he told the chef, who was just dropping by that he was planning on leaving at 7. The chef said that’s up to me. Cause it fucking is. I’ve never had someone push back on me or ignore me like this. My ability to boss people around comes from trust, i’m not management, i’m just reslly good at logistics and delegating tasks do everything comes together good and with as little work as possible for everyone. Everyone was too shy to call orders when I started and it was detrimental as hell cause restaurants need that, so I started doing it. I’ve got everyone’s best interests in mind and when I get a raise everyone else does too cause ive never said ‘I need more money’ ive always said ‘we need more money’. He’s new and may not get the setup we have going on, i’m the union rep, that is hard to tell because of the lack of a union, but we all work together to get the goods vs management and i’m the planner and mouthpiece, cause I’ve been championing other people’s causes from the start and that disguises organization. This motherfucker is blabbing to the chef all the time, heard him blab about front of house asking for a slice shop pizza before ringing it in and adding green peppers to it, its cause those are cut into 4 and a group of 5 came in, one guy had to wait and this new dude takes 20 minutes to stretch a 16 inch pizza so front of house offered his choice of which pizza and an add on to compensate for the wait. A handful of green pepper slices to keep a customer happy is fine, good and encouraged. Instead of just making the fucking pizza he insisted it be rung in and then the next day said he suspected front of house juat wanted to eat a pizza on the down low. Front of house is smarter than that. They all hate him cause he has this oddly typical hated for front of house that so many line cooks have. I got the full story cause im friends with all of front of house. I work the window and talk to them more than any other cook on the job, i’m chill about when they fuck up, cause we do to, but no one sees it. Plus if you’re on good terms with front of house and throw em down free food as often as possible they will sneak you drinks from the bar as well. We have a system going on here and the bosses dont need to fucking know. He should keep his mouth fucking shut. Any time the chef is around he brags about all the stuff he did that day. I blatantly stand around doing nothing in front of my boss all the fucking time. He joins me and we talk about star trek. There is no expectation to be busy when the restaurant is slow, the policy is ‘enjoy it while it lasts’. I know it isnt impressing the chef that he’s doing all this prep crap that we dont need as well, cause it just means itll go bad faster usually, the guy did do a good job on his first go at a tiramisu and that shit is hard, my chef brought up him fucking up a lot when I said he nailed that thing, I dont talk shit to the boss, but he replied that he was glad to hear something good and he’s been kinda iffy on the guy. When he fucks up like 3 pizza doughs in a row and the eait time is getting hella long he wont just let me take over and I think he thinks he’s still helping, but i need him out of the way so we can get people their food in a reasonable time period and it’s been too long. I dont care if you’re determined, be determined on your own time. You get 2 redos and then you gotta step the fuck aside and let someone who can do it handle it. He kept firing pizzas before I told him to and he’s super rough with the paddle so any weak spot in a dough is gotta rip, especially cause he just starts going and I have no time to say which ones to be careful with, not that he knows how to be careful anyway. He seems to think he’s already on the same level as me and the dude on vacation. Ive been doing this 5 fucking years, hes been doing it 7. We are god like at the job, I can get a 12 top doing 8 pizzas and 4 pastas turned around myself in less than 10 minutes, no problem. He is going off our start times and fire times instead of leaving himself room for remakes cause he cant even toss a dough and wrecks half his pizzas. Dough tskes a while to get okay at and getting really good tskes a couple years. But if that is the case, know that you have to start earlier on stuff than we do. I have stated this to him. He seems to resent the idea that he’s much much much worse than people with absurd amounts of experience over him. His pride doesnt match his ability and its a fucking pain, cause I dont wanna be mean, I’ve achieved obedience through co operation before. Most people dont wanna deal with getting the orders timed up just right and wanna be told ehat to make when by someone who knows what theyre talking about. This guy is full of independent thoughts that are wrong and he hasn’t been around long enough to be expressing them. Read the room, our kitchen otherwise has had everyone working there in some capacity for at leadt 3 years. We have unheard of levels of retention in this kitchen because of a secretly estsblished system. I am in charge of that system, people talk to me and I talk to the boss, it’s gotten big raises for everyone and a setup where we get a raise each year without begging. He doesnt know that and I dont wanna tip my hand cause I dont trust him. Front of house hates him cause hes duper slow and they gotta deal with the tables who are waiting. Hes over 20 minutes on wait times for 2 tops in an empty restaurant. The rest of us are under 10. He’s new but he just seems resistant to learning. His pasta game is decent except im pretty sure its unsanitary, he reuses the same strainer all day and when I dump it at the end of the night the pasta eater water has a lot of shit floating in it, I including allergens like shrimp and garlic as well as just melted cheese and ick. When plating a spaghetti cause he decided to cross to my station and do it, he left the tongs covered in sauce sitting in a container on the pasta line. Most of my work experience is in higher end stuff and sometimes in large quantities, I did a catering gig thst handled all the millionaire charity balls ans business summits etc and have made 3 course meals for 2000 people before with 3 days notice. This guy has worked bars that barely serve food and his last chef got mad when 3 people ordered food at once.
If he would just do what I tell him to I can navigate the ship through any waters but he is an intrangident motherfucker
