Fun fact, that cancellation is why the “shrug emoticon” sometimes loses an arm.)

You gotta put a \ before the asterisk to cancel out the mark-up, like this: \*

I love markdown and stuff but also I’m sad I can’t use “carat underscore carat” happy emoticons anymore because it mangles them lol.
