Probably my favourite of the Tom Holland Spider-Man films. It balanced a Peter-centric story pretty well with all the larger MCU references. My wife, who has seen half of Homecoming and little else MCU loved it, and didn’t get lost with any of the tie-ins. It created a great internal conflict for Peter that reflected well in Jean’s story. Got a little bit teary in the final Aunt May sequence.
I do feel like it could have benefited from shaving about 15-20 mins off. The movie felt like it reached a climax, and then there was another 20-30 minutes for the second real climax. Shaving some of the scenes off the front end could have tightened the whole experience. What I would remove I can’t say though.
It felt like it was really good, but I’ll have to watch again to fully process everything. I didn’t quite buy the rumours about who Sadie Sink would be, so after the revelation of course I was thinking that she’d been getting up to some pretty messed up shit to later be redeemed. Of course, Spider-man in the state he’s in in this movie recognises that she’s totally alone and doesn’t have anyone, which creates this perfect arc for him to bring Jean back from the brink by reaching out and simultaneously allowing people back into his life again. The idea that someone who’s gone too far might still be redeemable is a big recurring theme in Charles Xavier’s speeches in the old movies, and maybe something we could do a bit better in real life.
Phenomenal.
First, yes, Sadie Sink is playing Jean Grey. Ok, onto film spoilers.
My favorite scene has to be the “unforgivable” MJ fake out. I didn’t believe it, but I wanted to believe it. Jean Grey called it, true loves kiss breaks the spell. Fucking liar. Absolutely crushed. It also perfectly shows us how great Peter is. He can forgive Jean for something unforgivable and be her friend.
Also a highlight to the cinematography, especially during the fight with The Hand. Spider-Man flips, the camera flips. Swordfighting fun. Just solid.
And of the course the post credits. We have a Spider-Man in New York. We have a Spider-Man in space. This film showed us BOTH Spider-Men! Next up must be “The Punisher goes to Space!”
I’m not sure how to describe this, but I didn’t like Jean Grey and found her portrayal a unbelievable and inconsistent.
Why would what aunt May said reach her knowing what she did to people and especially with her reaction to Frank’s memories of his family being murdered in front of him just being a little funny quip.
Especially hated how vague on purpose they made hers and Peter’s dialogue just to create fake tension.
Not counting the fact that Pete might have without too much difficulty figured out that something was going on, all she had to do was mention her sister and her main antagonist would have helped her save her.She was just very cruel and making sociopathic comments all the way through I just can’t see what May said touching her in any way.
To add onto Mimicjar. Jean was inside Peter and I assume she got to feel like what it means to be loved by a mother and be someone with powers. Peter did not let himself get consumed even though everything pointed to him doing so. Frank was an example of what Peter could turn into, a cautionary tale. She was in both of their heads and chose Peter’s path.
May was being the mother that she didn’t have.
Jean and her sister talk about their mother abandoning them once they got their powers. Jean even tries to rationalize it as what else could her mother do.
Jean and Peter are also both living lives of isolation. Jean only had her sister so it doesn’t take much for her to turn antagonistic. Peter had a stronger foundation, but even he starts to slip, he throws Scorpion into a police car and nearly kills the officer inside.
Peter is able to find his way back because he finally reaches out and interacts with MJ and Ned. He has a friend. That’s all Jean needed. Jean needed someone, she needed a friend.
When Jean sees Peter’s memory she sees the kindness she’s been missing. She tries to dismiss it as just a memory, but Peter says he’ll be her friend. Jean wants to be a good person, but if everyone treats you as a monster, you act like a monster.
The webslinging was amazing. The camera work, to the way he pumps his arm at the end of a swing for more height.
And I loved seeing Yelena show up. And the relationship of Frank and Peter. And the way MJ convinced Frank to help Peter. And the way they used May.
Honestly, the character writing for this was just outstanding. The people and relationships all felt very real, and you could see the impact of what they’ve been through.

I stayed away from marketing for this film so I was fortunate to go in blind. Fun movie with a great twist villain. Love Frank but it could have used more bald men
I’ve seen a lot of the marketing/news, and I was still surprised by a lot of this film. It’s been strongly rumored that Sadie Sink was playing Jean Grey, but how her story was told was a complete surprise and what was told was excellent.
I also like that, similar to Loki, she is starting as a villain. Now her story gets to be her becoming a hero.
Also I want Spider-Man vs Kingpin. Someday.
Now that I think about it, the last red headed psychic also started off a villain. Let’s see how they switch it up.
