More May Happenings

Just a few more highlights from May...

Weather during May was unpredictable.  Chloe was fun to watch as goalie during her game.  She had a really hard time playing against the wind.  On more than one occasion she gave up and just sat down.
Jacob was student of the month during May.  I love how when in Junior High they tell you these things after the fact!  While cleaning out his backpack and binders, I continued to find interesting things that gave me more insight into my son's middle school life.

Chloe went to Kindergarten orientation.  She was super excited.  I loved her enthusiasm.  She will be attending the school I work at in the fall.  Yay!!!

Finishing my grading during soccer practices.  Report cards needing to be finalized--oh the joys.  Some people might ask, "What possibly do you have to grade in second grade?"  This stack was full of weekly spelling, comprehension, vocabulary, and math tests.  I said WEEKLY--well I don't grade it every week, so this stack had multiple weeks.  Oops!

Jacob getting a much needed hair cut, following a soccer game, and lunch.  I love our Saturdays!

We had a super busy day on this particular Thursday.  I thought I was doing awesome in making sure this fellow's cake was baked with his Dad.  When we arrived to pack meeting, we were the only ones with a cake.  Nice one Mom--oh well we had dessert that night!

Jacob's Spring Band concert.  He did awesome.  Nothing like watching your horn player empty his spit valve in the middle of a concert.  Blah!

The second Feller's Cake.  This one was dinosaur themed.  Yellow cake with chocolate frosting and crushed graham crackers--MMM!!

Jacob playing with my phone during church!  He is such a goofball!

Last Day Photos

Eric attended Trevor's last day awards assembly.  He received a special award in Math.  We were so proud of him and all of his hard work.

Memorial Weekend

During the holiday weekend we went to Bakersfield for a little mini-reunion.  My children had fun spending time with their cousins, swimming, and playing.

At the park my children learned to play waffle ball!!  (Baseball is a banned sport in our house--it's too hot, too windy, too boring and long, and very political and competitive in our community. That is the short version.)

A group picture with everyone.

Chloe and Grandpa Russell at the Riverlakes 1000 Flags event.

After walking around the park and listening to the band, we met everyone for lunch before heading our separate ways.  We went back to my parents and let the kids swim a little before we did some shopping.  For a late afternoon treat we went to get some yogurt.  Grandma came along so I took the opportunity to snap a picture with my Grandma.  She is the only surviving grandparent on both sides of our family.  She is 95 years old this September.  Chloe is pictured with my Mom.

This is always a good sign on the way home.  They were all asleep for the journey.  That means they had fun!!

Bittersweet Open House

Trevor and I attended the last Open House we would ever attend at Pierce Elementary.  We spent a good hour walking around the classroom, school, and art show.  We have been so blessed to have our boys attend Pierce.  They have a fabulous staff!  Next year, like Chloe, Trevor will attend the school where I work.  He has found peace with this decision and is excited.

Trevor's Planet Project

Showing me his Gallon Man and Math Facts Mastery Board.

His "OK" book.  He is such an awesome writer and illustrator.

Look at all of his fabulous art projects.  We will miss his art teacher, but he will have new experiences with Music and Art education at his new school.  Trevor had an awesome 3rd grade year.  His report card was always full of A's and 100% on his benchmarks.

Fathers and Sons Weekend

I love Fathers and Sons weekend!  Chloe and I get to have a girl's night out.  She picked to eat at McDonald's, of course.  She found some other kids to play with and had fun.

We went home and watched Barbie movies.  She even slept in my bed with me.  The boys returned the following morning.  I am not sure if Eric took any photos.  I should ask him, but this is the one photo I did take of the laundry!  It is always fun seeing how dirty the boys get from one night of camping--said no mother ever.

Glimpse of My Classroom

I know this will be a super boring post for those who only like to see pictures of my children, but this is where I spend a lot of time during the day.  It is a part of me.  I love teaching--well most days I do!

This school year was a big change for me.  I was working at a new school site, a new grade level, new colleagues, you get the idea--everything was new!  I had a few challenges and lots of learning experiences.  I learned so much this school year, and looking back it has made me a better teacher.  I know I can do hard things.  One of the many bright spots for me was my principal.  I have never worked for a woman who has worked as hard as she does.  She is amazing.  I honestly do not know where her energy comes from.  On the morning of Open House, I walked into my classroom and found this rose and a little note.  She has left many gifts and notes over the school year in my classroom--always so thoughtful and caring.  I also know, she has my back.  During some of my most difficult moments, with some of my most difficult students and parents, while in the moment I didn't always see it, but she had my back.  She knew I was doing my best, and pushed me a little harder to be better.  I look forward to many more years working for her.

This was a favorite activity we did as a class--we made a life sized Super Croc! We read an informational article and wrote a summary.  Next year I will make sure the head doesn't look so much like a serpent.

The students read about fossils and dinosaurs.  We ended the unit with a research report on a dinosaur they picked.  We even made fossils out of salt dough.   All the other stuff on their desks are projects we did throughout the year. They are able to take home these projects at Open House.  Otherwise, they go into their sacks until the last day of school.

After reading a fictional story about a swan and butterfly, we read about butterflies and wrote a summary about what we learned.  The last trimester of the year we focused on informational reports and summaries.  Writing is always a challenge to teach because it takes a lot of patience.  I have some students who finish their writing in one day and some who will take all week.  I am working on how to solve this problem, although I do not think it will be 100% solved because everyone's writing ability is different, as is their pace.

Their earth day promise.  I teach the 3 Rs and do a fun activity on Earth Day.  It goes well with our Life Cycle Unit because Earth is a living thing after all.

My Math bulletin board showed their Performance Task I created.  I am thinking of revamping it and making it my first ever Teachers Pay Teachers creation, but like I said I am just thinking about it.  The students had fun with the process and did a great job on their posters.  Do you see my 3 computers?  Wish I had more.

This is a view of the front east corner of the room.  On the wall was their Red Rock Opinion writing.  That was another writing genre we were working on this year.  They had to form an opinion with supporting reasons as to why Red Rock Canyon is the best state park!  They did an awesome job.  I am most proud of this bulletin board.  The student's writing is collected on their two-pronged paper and then we finished it with a cover and I pull it off the wall and viola--they have their writing memories for an entire year.  We do seasonal narratives, pictures and all sorts of stuff is collected and written throughout the year.  It is simple and not too much effort at all.  Also, on this wall are their AR goals up high.  For every marking period they meet their goal they get their name on the Wall of Fame in my classroom.  This also is put in their Writing Memories book to keep.  I could go on, but I wouldn't want to bore you. As you can see we were very busy during May preparing for Open House.

Butter Fly Release and Mother's Tea

Chloe's Preschool was having a special event that I didn't want to miss--the Mother's Tea and Cookies which coincided with the butterfly release.  Chloe was super excited for me to come that day.  I cherish the moments that she wants me around, someday she might not like it so much.

She was the line leader and was so patient.  She will do great next year in Kindergarten.

Chloe was able to hold the butterfly garden until it was time for the release.  There was one particular butterfly who did not want to fly.  The children were trying to coax it out.
Then it was time to play!  I said my goodbyes and went back to work.  I was so grateful for my friend who was willing to substitute the few hours for me so I could share this day with Chloe.

Mother's Day/Birthday

I woke up Sunday morning to the smell of bacon and french toast.  I was served breakfast in bed by the children and Eric.  I love being spoiled.  My favorite thing to do is take a picture with my children on Mother's Day.  Man oh man, where did the time go?  They are growing way too fast.
(Jacob 12, Chloe 5, and Trevor 9)

I love hand-made cards on my special days, especially with chocolate!

For dinner Eric did not disappoint!  He barbecued ribs, zucchini, sweet potatoes, and garlic bread--and it was delicious!!

After dinner, we ate the much anticipated turtle ice cream birthday cake.  Eric had church responsibilities to take care of on the day of my birthday so we postponed the celebration until Mother's Day.  No biggie when you get past a certain age.  I definitely think birthdays are a much bigger deal when your younger.  I think that is why I make sure they are memorable for my children.

Mother and Son's Pirate Party

Our ward does an annual Father/Daughter Dance.  So the Primary decided to sponsor a Mother/Son's Pirate Pizza Party.  We had so much fun.  The boys played games and the Moms talked--they didn't seem to mind.  Eric and Chloe helped manage a booth.  So it was a double win--I didn't have to cook dinner either!

The decorations were pirate themed and adorable.  The primary committee did an awesome job.  There were mothers and sons ranging in ages from newborn to 80 years old.  It was so much fun seeing the older sons in the ward bring their mothers.  I hope someday my sons will take me to these types of events!
Chloe had fun with Eric working one of the game booths.  She dressed up as a "mermaid".
