The Untouchables

We all have these people in our lives. Whether we chose to admit it or not is where we may differ in opinion. You know, they are the people in your life that don't know that you exist, yet you definitely know them and many things about them. A good example would be celebrities. We all see them and their lives on the big screen and feel that we "know" them in some way. We get snap shots into their personal lives and see their personalities and values presented in interviews. We know when they get married, have babies, and go on vacations (not necessarily in that order). We see all their good and bad acts and then make judgements about them based on the "facts" we receive. If we dislike the "facts" we tend to only read or desire to acquire new facts on them to fortify our dislikes. But, if we like them we wish that in some small corner of our life we would have the chance to meet them, talk to them, and see if we really would like them on our own.

A perfect example of this for me is Tim McGraw and Faith Hill. I saw them interviewed on the Oprah show once and started to fantasize about what it would be like to be their friends. To have dinner and play a good came of "Settlers of Catan" with them. "Wouldn't you like to do that with anyone famous?", you might ask. The answer, "No not really". There was something in the interview that intrigued me more than usual. They seemed normal, real, and very much like someone I would chose to be friends with. Yet the sad fact is that they are on such a different realm of the social ladder that it would never happen. They are untouchable in my sphere.

Now that I have started blogging my
"untouchable" friends have expanded beyond the celebrity bubble. Us bloggers all have them. They are the blog that you happen to come across when you are "blog surfing". You have been at it for 20 minutes or so and can't remember who they are connected to that you are connected to, but you like them. You find their post intriguing and riveting. You save them on your "favorites" list and visit them on a daily basis. They of course have no idea that you are doing this. They continue their lives and blogs totally unaware of your existence, yet you get something from theirs. You anxiously await their blogs just as much, if not more, than others you do know. Strange yet fulfilling. You want to email them, comment on a post, but there is some degree of fear involved. Will they think you're psycho? Will they respond? You have so much invested in them that you really don't want to know the answer to those questions and don't know if you can risk the rejection. You so want to be a "part" of their life, but don't know how to go about doing it. The admiration is so one sided.

I guess one has the choice in this situation to close the untouchable gap. To take a chance. Go for it. See if they are really the person you think they are. Reach out into the black hole with risk of only a void in return. And yet, that is not the outcome one truly fears. The outcome feared and the biggest risk comes in receiving that long awaited touch and thus dispelling the appeal and the draw of the untouchable.

2nd Sleep Dreams

Do you know what I'm talking about when I say, "2nd sleep"? It's when you wake up about an hour before you usually do and then dose back to sleep. I love 2nd sleep. It always seems deeper and more restful to me. I also love it because I have some crazy dreams. I really need to start a dream journal. I think it would be fun to look back and see what I was dreaming about a few months ago and if it really did relate to my life at the time.

Well I know the dream I had last night deals with my current life. As you all know we have acquired a cute little dog named Griffin. For the most part, I really like him. He is great with Ellie and in my opinion can stay just on that fact alone. However, he has had some issues that we have had to work on, number one being that he occasionally still has an accident in the house. He was good for a really long time and then he started having problems. There was some discipline involved and he is doing better.

His newest vice is that he chews on our shoes and his rug in the laundry room. I was not very happy with him when I saw that. I guess I can't really blame him. He is still a puppy and we all know they love to chew. How can you really fault him for doing what he's "suppose" to?

Anyway, my dream. So my dream this morning during 2nd sleep had to do with him. In my dream he had turned into a big St. Bernard. I guess it's not too much of a stretch since his coloring is similar. As a large St. Bernard he was peeing and pooping all over my house and you can imagine the quantity jump from his current size to a St. Bernard size. He also had gone in and chewed a piece of brand new carpet to tiny particles. To say the least, I was not happy and just started hitting him. I was really going at it because I was so frustrated. It was somewhere in the middle of the beatings that I woke up, quite relieved that the dog hadn't really done all I thought he had, and that I hadn't really beaten him. I'm sure there's some Freudian meaning to it all, but I really can't think that it goes much deeper than the fact I have occasional frustrations with my dog.

If nothing else, these dreams give me a glimpse of things I perhaps need to work on or things that are consuming my thoughts. Some time I'll write about my Oprah Winfrey dream.

The Weather Outside is Frightful....

....And I Could Not Be More Delighted!!!
It is finally overcast here in the ever so bright state of Missouri and I am probably the only one happy - thrilled - about it. I have decided that I would do really well in the Northwest where it rains all the time. I didn't realize how much I liked it until moving here and I think this is probably the 3rd overcast day we have had since moving into the house. Michigan was pretty cloudy and overcast and I just loved it. I love being able to snuggle up in a blanket in my house and have the weather just crumby outside. That's probably why I like fall so much. You still get some sunny days, but they are crisp and a bit cool and the smell is like heaven to me. You also get the wind blowing and the rain and clouds coming.
If you all had been here this summer you would totally understand. It's one thing to be in your house when the wind is blowing and the rain coming down and a completely different feeling when you are captive in your house because the house is under assault from solar rays and a few minutes outside make you think you're going to wither and DIE. I was telling my mom about my happiness at the clouds and she thought I was crazy. But she lives in the PNW where it rains all the time, so I partially can't blame her but I also want to trade with her.
So here's to many, many, many more cloudy days - hopefully.

Hackl

So my dad was able to come for a few days last week and Ellie LOVED IT! She really likes my dad, which makes me happy. He is the most blessed person in the family, seeing as she will bless him in every prayer she says (and she's been saying ALL the prayers lately) and sometimes he is mentioned 2-3 times. I often have to remind her to bless mommy and daddy - I was starting to feel left out.

It is such a great feeling to have your kids attach themselves to your parents, in-laws, and their aunts/uncles and cousins. I think they are all really great people, and I of course think Ellie's great, so it's nice to see her form relationships with them. It makes me sad that they aren't closer, but there are pros and cons to every situation you're in. As my friend Brittany said once, "Your kids will be as close to their extended families as you want them to be." I think that is very true, it just takes a little more effort when they don't live in the same town.

It's Here!!!!

So the day has finally arrived that I can continue my favorite book series. The minute Ellie gets up, we are going to buy a copy. I can't wait. So if any of you are wondering what I will be doing in the next few days, I will be sitting on my couch, totally engrossed, ignoring my daughter and anyone else, until I have finished "Eclipse". Then I will be moping around for a year until the next book comes out. Maybe I should have treated this like "Harry Potter" and not read them until the series was complete. But really, what fun is that?
