Affirmation Day 37

How to Not Give Up – 8 Strategies for Not Quitting If the above video doesn't play click here .

For Saturday, May 18: Keep on keeping on

It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop.   Confucius The con of our "fast-food-society" is we've been conditioned to believe that if *it* doesn't happen quick or happen immediately then we should just give up.  But the reality is the the slower or longer it takes the better chance we have of *it* sticking.  It is along the journey of *it* that we learn lessons of sustainability, patience, perseverance, courage, etc.  If *it* happens too quickly then the chances for relapse are high because the necessary lessons haven't been learned.  As the saying goes, "slow and steady wins the race" and the fable of the tortoise and the hare proved that.  Like the tortoise, it doesn't matter how slow you go it just matters that you don't stop.

For Saturday, March 6: Until

How long should you try? Until. Jim Rohn Trying your hand at something takes  perseverance.  And to give up after one or two attempts may indicate you've got some work to do on your personal character.  What does it say about you that you give up so easily?  Why do you give up so easily?  What needs to change in you to have the strength to keep at it?  Those kinds of questions plus others are worth asking and answering.   What kind of answer is " until "?   It's the best kind.  "Until" tells you when it is time to stop or it has been accomplished.  There is no questioning with "until."  It you quit before "until" happens then you will always wonder, you may be stuck in a cycle of defeat, etc.  But if you keep trying right up until the "until" then you will know that you did everything you possibly could.   Don't be afraid that you will miss the "until".  You won't.  How do I know?  I just do.  I kno...

How green is your grass?

You may think the grass is greener on the other side.  But if you take the time to water your own grass it would be just as green.   Unknown Oh I like today's quote.  A lot.  Why it has never occurred to me in this way I don't know, but I sure am glad I am thinking about it now. We are a lazy bunch aren't we?  We want the green grass but we don't want to put the work in to keep it green.  But the only way to keep it healthy and green is to put the work in. Sometimes our grass has got crabgrass and weeds.  Take a careful look, is it because of your neglect?  Or is it because the soil wasn't nutrient rich to begin with?  If it's because of your neglect own up and do what it takes to remove it.  If it is because of depleted soil then you may need to move. Sometimes our grass is getting brown and dried up.  Take a careful look, is it because of your neglect?  Or is it because ...

Looking for the out?

The only way out is through. Robert Frost There's no better way to say it than how Frost so simply put it.  The only way out of a situation is to go through it.  And yes, that means you are probably going to be walking through some painful and messy but yet exciting stuff on your way through.  I'm willing to bet that you *all* know what I mean.  I think we've all had to get out by going through.  I know I have.  Oh sure, I tried to look for the out without having to walk through but there was no other path to take.  Even the shortcuts we attempt will eventually lead us back to the main path where we have to walk  through.  Why do we look for the out?  The out before its time steals from us character development, growing some thick skin, gaining some life experience, expanding our worldviews even.  Walking through helps us grow in all of those ways and more!  And while we think, yes we deceive ourselves, that going around the...

Don't just survive - thrive!

See today's challenge as tomorrow's breakthrough: you will thrive.   Mary Anne Radmacher What seems to be the obstacle for today?  Or maybe its not an obstacle but a challenge.  Maybe the challenge lies in getting over the obstacle!  I think those can be two different things.  But regardless, what is it for you today?  It doesn't have to be a "grandiose" challenge, it can be something as small as eating 100 less calories today.  The challenge is yours to conquer and nobody has permission to judge what the obstacles in your life are.  Because we are unique, our challenges will be unique to us and what will help us develop character.   How do you approach challenges?  Do you groan and grunt your way through and just wish for it to be over, not ever looking for what treasure can be gleaned from it?  Or do you groan and grunt your way through (*grin* let's be honest we all groan and grunt our way through a bit) but have the awareness...

Get past the start and you'll be fine

Do not give up, the beginning is always the hardest.   Unknown Ugh.  Don't I know this.  The beginning is always the hardest.  I wish it weren't.  I wish it were easy.  But it's the hardest.  I think I know why.  It's the hardest in the beginning because that's what we need to fight through.  It's easy to give up when not much is invested yet.  And our tendency as humans is to give up and if we don't have much invested yet then it's easy to give up on it.  But we have to fight through that desire to give up so quickly and we have to dig deep and find the desire to see it through.  This applies to so many things in our lives.  Exercise, addressing clutter in our lives,  fixing a relationship, etc.  And sometimes, for me at least, the re-start is harder that it was when I began!  For example, I've really been struggling to re-start what I know I need to do to be healthy physically.  It's ...

Are you a hurdler*?

Obstacles are things a person sees when he takes his eyes off of his goal.   E. Joseph Cossman Say you are a track and field star and your event is the hurdles.  (You have to pretend it's you  because  it certainly isn't me.  And if you know me well you are nodding your head enthusiastically in agreement! HA!)  I know just  enough  about hurdles to know this - if you don't keep your eyes focused ahead of you while also taking in where the next hurdle is to leap over, you will be kissing pavement quicker than you can blink.  The hurdler's eyes must stay on the goal, the finish line, while also being just enough aware of the obstacle he/she has to get over without making contact with the pavement.  If their eyes stray from the goal for any length of time all they see in front of them is the hurdle and that will trip them up - literally and  figuratively .  Something in our brains takes in the obstacle in front of us and convinc...

Creativity

To live a creative life we must lose our fear of being wrong.    Joseph Chilton Pearce A true creative person who is moved by the mediums and colors and methods that catch their eye cannot be wrong.  I  immediately  think of Andy Warhol.  He obviously did not fear being wrong.  :)  And while perhaps his creative works aren't what I would do or what I'm even drawn to I can see that he was extremely creative, talented, and did not fear what other people thought of his works.  Because he was  free  from that fear he was free to express himself through his chosen creative method.   I think most often we first have to get over the fear that whatever we feel we want to be creative about is wrong, especially if it doesn't fit in the box of what culture says is the definition of creative arts.  Then, once we have determined that our desired expression of creativity is okay, we have to tackle being afraid of "doing it wrong". ...
