This and That

Safeway had special events during Father's Day weekend. Ethan liked the mariachi bands of course. There were three guys playing and they circled the cart to play for Ethan.

We got a bunch of new toys from someone on Craigslist. I was a little annoyed that they didn't tell us that a few only speak French, but Ethan loves them and they were really cheap.

Ethan understands the concept of counting to three. He loves having his picture taken and will smile every time I count to three to take his picture. He can't keep his eyes open when the flash lights up though. I have lots of pictures like the one below.
Terrible pictures of me, but I still kinda like them.

We went to IKEA on Friday and Dad and Ethan had lots of fun. Ethan ended up in quite a few toy bins. He also got to hang out in a bin of sheep skin rugs, try out all of the toys, and play with a big silver bowl that he loved.
And of course Dad shared his ice cream.

Ethan is now very good at crawling. While talking to my dad on Father's Day, I found out that Ethan is just like my dad was as a baby: he pretty much uses crawling as a way of getting to something he can use to stand up. He loves to stand and walk holding onto things. He is very steady and only needs one hand to stay up. He can even stand on his own for a few seconds.

As Ethan grows, I don't know how many times I have said, "I don't want him to grow anymore; I love this stage!" But I find myself saying that about every stage. Ethan is currently in the "peekaboo stage." Anything remotely resembling the word or game peekaboo is hilarious. The funny thing about Ethan is that he laughs the hardest when you really scare him. The higher he jumps when we pop out, the harder he laughs.

Of course Mike is the best at getting Ethan to crack up. He will pop up and roar and Ethan will just about die laughing. Mike and Ethan also chase each other. Hopefully I will get a video of this soon, but it is the classic format of little kid chase. Mike will start crawling towards Ethan and growl or make some sort of menacing noise. Ethan will squeal and turn to crawl or walk (holding onto something) away. Then Ethan turns back around and goes towards Mike laughing. It is really really cute.

Ethan has a mentor in finding entertainment/trouble. He has started following Sam around and copying him. It is really funny to see the two of them crawling around, Ethan right on Sam's heels, enjoying any trouble Sam is smart enough to find.

These are fun times with my cute little guy!

Happy Little Stinker

Sometimes Ethan doesn't fall asleep very quickly, or he wakes up too soon. Lately, if he does that I have been trying to just leave him in his crib in hopes of him falling asleep. When I do this, I accept the fact that it might mean letting him "cry himself to sleep." Today I went in to check on him after he had been fighting a nap. I cracked the door open and peeked around it to see his crib. He was sitting up in the corner playing with his crib bumper! This is happening more and more often--instead of falling asleep when I don't immediately take him out of his crib, he just finds a way to entertain himself. I have even waited 45min-1hr several times while he played and finally given in and taken him out of his crib or rocked him to sleep! Such a happy little stinker!

This reminds me of a conversation Becky (Sam's mom) and I had this morning about how the two boys have very different personalities. When Sam wakes up, he has no interest in playing in his crib by himself. Another difference that amuses me is how the two boys react to each other's crying. When Sam makes any sort of crying, unhappy, or just loud noise, Ethan (mostly when tired) gets upset. Sam, on the other hand, apparently thinks that one crying baby is enough and will almost always be silent if Ethan is upset. This makes for a frustrating, yet funny, cycle. Example: This morning I was getting ready. I had Sam in the high chair with his bottle and Ethan was holding onto the high chair and standing up by Sam. Sam started squawking for attention. Ethan was tired, so he started bawling. At this point Sam was immediately silent. As soon as I got Ethan to calm down, Sam started making the same noise at Ethan again. Ethan started crying. (I swear it kinda looked like Sam had a little satisfied smirk on his face. :D ) This cycle went on until I decided I just wouldn't finish getting ready for the day. Silly boys.

Swaddling Still

We still swaddle Ethan while he sleeps, and most of the time while he is drinking a bottle too. I was trying not to swaddle him this afternoon (it's getting too hot!) and took this picture. Can you tell by his pose that he is used to being all wrapped up?

Father's Day

Before I forget, here are a few pictures from Father's Day. Ethan is very lucky to have a Daddy who loves him so much, and I am lucky to have a husband who takes such an active role in taking care of Ethan. Ethan absolutely adores Mike and vice versa. For Father's Day Mike got a framed picture of him and Ethan

and one of Mike, his dad, and Ethan.

I made Mike bread pudding for breakfast, Tostadas the way his mom makes them (his request) for dinner,

and a fruit pizza for dessert.

He also got to wear this cool paper tie to church-thanks for the idea Lisa.

Mike deserves this kind of special treatment everyday-we sure are lucky!

8 Months Later...

We have finished paying for Ethan's birth. Hooray! It has taken this long for us to get all of the claims paid by insurance, and mostly for the anesthesiologist to agree to discount our balance after the insurance, but everyone is paid and that makes me very happy!

The Nursery

I've posted several times about Ethan's nursery. I love it! Instead of showing a whole bunch of pictures with captions, I decided to just do a little video tour while the kiddos were playing today.

Bonus Video: Ethan laughing at Dad. He starts laughing so hard he doesn't make any noise. :)

He did this by himself, silly kid!

Plant snapdragons

We have a flower garden in each corner of our backyard grass. Last year we had snap dragons in two of them, and they did amazingly well. So well, in fact, that they started to block our sprinklers which made for some sad grass. This year we only planted short stuff, but check out all of these snap dragons! And I have done 0 work! Because they started from seeds this year, they haven't started blocking the sprinklers either! If you are planting flowers I would definitely recommend these!

Can't Help But Smile

It is not uncommon for me to realize that Ethan has woken up too soon from his nap, but most of the time I find that I can't help but smile anyway, and here's why. This video starts with the outside of Ethan's door. Listen carefully* and you can hear some cute cooing and raspberries. And then when I open the door, you get to see the best part of all, a standard good morning greeting from Ethan. This is about 44 sec and close to half of it is the door, so sorry, but if you're an Ethan fan, it's worth it. Even he can't help but smile as he watches the video. :)

*Hint: if you turn up the volume to hear Ethan at the beginning, turn it down at around 20 sec or you may be deafened by my, "Good Morning!"

Even when I wish he were sleeping, that greeting always makes me smile!

It takes a village...

to repair a main water line. Here's the story of our village:

Mike decided Saturday morning to go get some plants for our yard. He bought 4 bushes for the back, two bushes for outside Ethan's window, two tomato plants, and a palm tree for the front yard. Not too long into digging in the backyard, he had already cut through a small drip line and the main drip line. Annoying, but not a huge deal. He also remembered how hard it is to dig in the mountain dirt in our area and was wishing he had a pick ax. So, at my suggestion, he went and bought a pick ax. As he started into the front yard to remove a bush and replace it with the palm tree I reminded him to be careful not to hit out water line or power lines, cue ominous foreshadowing music.

Less than ten minutes later Mike opens the front door, "You're not using any water are you?" "No." And he's gone. I think, "You've got to be kidding me" and run out front. Sure enough, there is water gushing out of the hole Mike had been digging, which is right next to our water box, and right in line with the blue spray paint arrow the city used to mark our water line last time we were landscaping.

Mike, being from Utah, was not thinking about our water line only being 12" down and had put the pick ax all the way through the water line--a hole through the top and bottom of the pipe. He tried to find a lever or something in the water box to turn off the water but couldn't. Fortunately, he knew that our next door neighbor worked for the water company.

Enter villager #1
Mike ran next door and got our neighbor who attempted to use a wrench in place of the key the water company has to turn off the water. He gave me the number for the emergency line to the water department. I called, listened to a recording, got put on hold, and then hung up when our neighbor finally got the water off.

Now to assess the damage. Mike gets an empty milk carton and starts bailing the water out of the hole.

Enter Villager #2
Our neighbor from down the street, Steve, comes down to check on us (a yard and street full of water must have tipped him off that we were having a problem). He doesn't know anything about plumbing, but has a bucket we can use to bail out the water. We finally get all the water out and see this:

Villager #1 tells Mike that the piping is called Pex pipe and that he should be able to get a coupling at Home Depot. Phew, all we have to do is cut out the broken section and put in a coupling.

Enter Villager #3
At Home Depot Mike is unable to find the part that he needs. He learns from an employee there that they don't carry the connectors for Pex pipes, but that he can go to a certain plumbing store not too far away.

Enter Villager #4
Mike calls the plumbing store. They do not have the correct parts either, but tell him that Lowe's probably does. On to Lowe's.

Enter Villager #5
The Lowe's employee helps Mike to look for the correct parts. They have Pex piping, but not the correct size. Mike is referred to the same plumbing store. They tell Mike that he might have to get the parts from a specialty store for contractors, which won't open until Monday.

Mike ends up back at Home Depot where they start calling Home Depot's all over the state looking for the correct size piping. They find one about 45 min away, but the employee there suggests a coupling made for copper and PVC piping that will work. Mike buys that part, comes home relieved, and cuts out a section of the pipe so that he can insert the coupling. Uh oh, even though this is a 1" coupling and we have a 1" pipe, the Pex pipe walls are so thick that they won't fit into the coupling.

Back to Home Depot, with a piece of the pipe to look for a bigger coupling. Of course there is no coupling big enough, and now it is no longer an option to patch the holes because we have cut the pipe.

Enter Villager #7
During all of this I, of course, am starting to get very worried about not having any water for the next few days. So, I called the water company again and asked how we can get the parts to fix this problem. The foreman tells me that he and his crews are about to head out on their routes and that he will stop by to see what he can do to help. So, two hours later he comes by. He actually knows Villager #1 through work. He gave Mike several feet of copper tubing and two massive couplings that allow Pex to go in one side and copper tubing to go in the other.

So, still with the help of Villager #1, who spent a large part of his day helping us, Mike cut each end of the tube and attached the couplings. Now to cut the copper tubing. Mike had bought a hack saw, but it was pretty lame, so we were using the neighbor's for everything.

Enter Villager #8
Right after we measured where to cut the copper piping, our neighbors across the street (Sam and family) open their garage door. We tell them what is going on and find out that Tony, Sam's dad, used to be a plumber and he has a "saw-all!" He cuts the copper with no problem and comes over to help get all of the pipes together. No more holes!

We turn the water back on and both connections start spraying water. Fantastic. Mike and Villagers 1 and 8 spend some time tightening all of the connections and now, finally, we have water with no leaking pipes! We are leaving it uncovered for awhile to watch for leaks and are considering finding the correct Pex pipe parts anyway since they will probably last longer than the compression couplings.

I don't know what we would have done without our village of helpers--thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

So five hours later, in the Arizona heat, we have water, but none of the nine plants Mike bought were planted. The bushes sitting in the backyard were looking pretty pitiful as we had not been able to water them. So Mike stayed out for another 3-4 hours planting all of the plants and setting up the drip line to them. Poor Mike was really glad when yesterday was over!
P.S. Notice the rock? While I was in New York, we had 20 tons of gravel delivered to our house. Mike and some very generous neighbors, family, and ward members helped get it all into the backyard. Another big, HUGE THANK YOU!!! The rock is still all covered in red dust, but underneath is a really cool color. Until this water main incident our whole street was covered with red dust as well, so there is one silver lining!

Abegg Look-alike Meter

I think the Look-alike Meter is getting lazy because Lisa's kids both looked equally like the two parents as well.

Double Stroller

Warning: This is one of many posts catching me up on our lives of late.

I have been watching Craigslist for a double umbrella stroller for awhile and finally found a good deal on one. I love being able to get out of the house, and the boys do too!

Our neighborhood park.
They both loved the slide. We took turns sliding down it, and they thought it was just as entertaining watching the other one come down as it was going down themselves.

Sam was really determined to get up these stairs. He did eventually make it onto the first one, but never got on the second--maybe next time.
Watching the ducks and geese at the lake by the library while we waited for babytime to start.

A Few More Pictures

Me and Ethan in one of the visitors centers.

Peas make great face paint!

Do you see Kiwi?
Here's a clue.
3 kiddos at Lisa's.
First time on a swing! He held onto the bars the whole time, but loved it. He did hold onto the bars on each side at one point (one hand on each side), but I only got a video of it. I am not going to post any videos of him swinging, because as cute as he is, they will give you motion sickness.

Crawling

The video below shows Ethan crawling to this window. When he reached the window, he kept crawling trying to go through it.

Crawling means Ethan gets to go new places, which is entertaining for both of us.

Here is a selection of crawling videos. It is 2 min long--sorry. Between Ethan still moving slowly and me thinking everything he does is great, the clip stayed long, despite the editing.

Backyard Camping

In an effort to do more exciting things on the weekends, I planned a "camp out" in our backyard yesterday.

We went swimming.
Played with bubbles.
Ate kabobs.
Roasted marshmallows.
Made s'mores.
And I set up a tent so that after Ethan went to bed (in his crib) we could play games or watch a movie in the tent and sleep outside since the weather at night is still so nice. Unfortunately, Mike fell asleep while putting Ethan to bed, so we didn't actually camp out.

Here is Ethan playing in the pool. Notice how he is trying to stand on his own. Oh, and how he's trying to eat the pool--I guess he was hungry.

Here is Ethan's new high-5 skill:
