Mysterious Creature Spotted In New London 

Something odd washed ashore in New London this weekend and people are not quite sure what it is.

Carved into the cavern’s limestone wall is a figure that’s half-human and half-hawk, holding a ceremonial knife.

Next to it is etched a stone ax “in the process of transforming into a human,” Lawrence said.

A series of monsters line the ceiling, including a 6-foot-long “kind of menacing-looking, toothy-mouthed fish,” he said.

Another animal vaguely resembling a kangaroo is drawn in charcoal deeper into the cave.

Bizarre Morgellons remains a mystery 

The syndrome is being referred to as Morgellons. The name appears in a 1674 essay that describes an outbreak of “harsh hairs…unquiet symptoms…coughs and convulsions” among French children, but whether the moniker refers to the same disease is not known. Mary Leitao, a biologist in a town near Pittsburgh, found the term in a 1935 medical journal article when she was looking for an explanation for an eruption on her 2-year-old son’s lip.

1932 Murder Still Haunts Appalachia

Pieces of the Past: Acorny tale 

The superstition that one should "touch wood" in order to keep a dreadful idea at bay stems from the Druidic belief that the oak tree possessed mysterious powers. The Druids worshipped the oak as a giver of food and referred to it as the "tree of life" because it also hosts mistletoe, which was, and is, an important plant for celebrations.

The Druids also believed that fairies lived in oaks, leading the Greek writer Lucian to write in the second century the earliest surviving example of science fiction, the "Verae Historiae," "True Histories" or "A True Story," a then modern comedy based on historical mythology. In the book, Lucian writes of "Cynobalani" or "Puppycorns," dog-faced men who fight on the backs of winged acorns.
