Still Wary and Weary of Self-Promotion

Gentle reader,

You may have noticed that most of my writing here, aside from Sunday sermons and posting Heather's nature photography, has been about a certain set of books and videos which will go nameless and linkless in this post.

In today's publishing world, it's the job of the author to engage his audience and get the word out about his stuff. I have fully embraced that job, in large part, because I believe in the truth I've discovered in the Bible and consider it a responsibility to share it with others. It's been a wild joy to see those nameless, linkless books and videos spread far and wide. It's a God-thing, and I'm celebrating Him and want to celebrate with you.

But I know the tendencies of my deceitful heart are also to snatch at glory and turn even a "rejoice with me" statement into a "look at me" moment. A year later, I'm still wary and weary of self-promotion.

I expect that in the coming weeks these kinds of promotional posts will taper off, and I hope to provide more substantive book reviews and biblical/theological/reflection posts. I'm not retiring from writing and speaking on and against that word that starts with "g," but I am planning to focus my limited time and energies more on my family, flock, and church association for the next few years.

Thanks for bearing with me, especially if you're turned off by the constant barrage of promotional posts. I'm excited about each one of them and hope they serve others, but I sure don't want my life to be about self-reflecting mirrors. Pray for me that I would more and more reflect the image of Christ (Colossians 3:1-11).

Wisdom for Newly Published Authors

I've been saving this article for several years now because it seemed very wise when I first read it.

But now that Resisting Gossip is out, I appreciate it even more:

Wary and Weary of Self-Promotion

A good friend jokingly asked me the other day, "So, did I hear that you wrote a book?"

He was gently making of fun of how my blog and Facebook are filled up with a steady stream of announcements about a certain book which won't be linked to in this post.

I take his point. My life (at least online and a good deal offline) has been consumed with getting the word out about that certain book which won't be linked to in this post.

I'm wary of self-promotion. Proverbs 27:2 says, "Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; someone else, and not your own lips."  And it's not good enough to say, "I'm just passing on what someone else said about me." There are many dangers inherent in tooting your own horn, not the least of which is overweening pride, a deadly sin that kills relationships with both God and people.

On the other hand, I'm very excited about the message about that certain book which won't be linked to in this post and want others to be blessed by it. This article by Mary Keely on a better approach was very helpful to me in giving me a good perspective on the right motivation for "marketing." [Owen Strachan had some good things to say about "re-tweeting" oneself, as well.]

But on the third hand, I'm very aware of my tendency to justify whatever it is that I want to be doing. So, I continue to watch my heart in this area and maintain a careful wariness of my motives and actions. For example, I try to focus on promoting the book and not its author, though the two are inextricably linked, of course. I also remind myself regularly to not believe my own press clippings and never take myself seriously. My wife helps me with this by calling me "Dr. Fathead."

And on the fourth hand (What am I, an octopus?), I'm also weary of self-promotion--both in others and myself. Nobody enjoys a proud person who is self-focused. I don't want to be Narcissus--what a useless bore! I want to be a humble person who serves the people around me. If I become convinced that my posts about that certain book which won't be linked to in this post have stopped serving others, then I'll close up shop right then and there.

One of the reasons why I mention this today is that I'm headed into a busy week of promotion for that book that won't be linked to in this post, and I'll soon be even asking you readers to help me get the word out about that certain book that won't be linked to in this post, and I want you to know why it's important to me. It's not because I'll get rich or famous. It's because I care about what God has said about the topic of the book and believe God has graciously given me something helpful to say about it to bless other people.

I don't pretend to have it all figured out, but I do know that I want the Lord Jesus Christ to get the real promotion and all the glory.

What a Week!

Whew! What a week this has been.

We kicked it off last Sunday with a joyful party to celebrate the release of Resisting Gossip (photos). It was so fun to give a copy to every family in the church and all of the visitors.  Dave and Deb Almack had a good time with us and went home with a couple dozen fresh eggs.

On Monday, we stood on tiptoes waiting for the book launch and passed the time comparing me with Uncle Si from Duck Dynasty.

Then the big day came! On Tuesday, I got a call from Dave Almack saying, "Happy Resisting Gossip Day!" and the book was officially released. I marked the occasion by remembering how I overwhelmed I was by Ed Welch's affirming words in the foreword--everything I aspire to be and hope the book is.

I was traveling to Pittsburgh on Tuesday for a pastoral visit and to visit some pastors. I got in the car early in the morning, and I didn't think about what time it was when I got in the van and headed out on I-80. I flipped on my radio.....and there was my own voice! I had tuned right into the pre-recorded interview with Dean Christian on WTLR! What a fun surprise!

When I got home from my trip, I was greeted with my favorite meal (porcupine meatballs) and my favorite dessert (texas sheet cake) and a ginormous "Congratulations" sign made by my daughter. Party time!

When we went to bed that night, Heather and I turned to our bed-time Psalm for the day, and it "just-so-happened" to be Psalm 16 which includes one of my favorite things to say about the blessings God has given me:

LORD, you have assigned me my portion and my cup; you have made my lot secure.
The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance.
Psalm 16:5-6

The next few days were whirlwinds of pastoral ministry (meetings, visits, sermon-prep, a funeral) while enjoying the "launch week."

Many people that I respect posted short reviews, interviews, endorsements, news stories, and guest posts including:
Resisting Gossip is now available lots of places online (even Wal-Mart.com?!) and some of the booksellers offered it this week at amazing introductory prices:

It's also now available on a growing list of e-book formats.

And it seems that we're just getting started. People are expressing interest in the book (the publisher even air-freighted orders this week to bookstores in the UK and Australia) and in interviews about the book (look for a Q&A at the Biblical Counseling Coalition next week).

Today, as I prepared tomorrow's sermon for Lanse Free Church, I told the Lord again what I said at the very end of the book, "I am especially grateful for my King and Rescuer, the Lord Jesus Christ. May You and Your Father get all the glory."

This week, the boundary lines have indeed fallen for me in pleasant places. Thank you, Lord!

Dave Almack's Experience at Lanse Free Church This Weekend

It was great to have the director of CLC Publications, Dave Almack, and his wife Deb in our home and at church this morning for the Resisting Gossip pre-launch celebration.

This evening when he got back to Philadelphia, he blogged about his reflections on his experience in a post called Free Range Chickens and the Gossip Guy.

What an encouragement to read his kind words, especially about our awesome church family.

I hope his family enjoys the eggs.

The Official "Resisting Gossip" Release Celebration at Lanse Free Church

I'm excited to celebrate the release of Resisting Gossip with our church family on Sunday.

Dave Almack, the director of CLC Publications will be present with his wife Deb. We will have "choice morsels" to eat after church.  I'll get to thank everyone who supported the project.

And every family (including visitors!) will get a free copy of the book! They are already in people's mailboxes.

If you are nearby, we'd love to have you join us at church this Sunday at 10am.

Countdown: Just 7 Days to the Release of "Resisting Gossip!"

Rejoice with me!

It's hard to believe that it's almost here. Resisting Gossip will be released in just one week from CLC Publications.

It's been 5 years since I originally had the idea of a study of the problem of gossip as a doctoral project at Westminster Theological Seminary under the leadership of the faculty of CCEF.

And now, the fruit of that project is going to be available to help Christians to recognize, resist, and respond to sinful gossip.

Praise the Lord!

If you want to know more, you can preview, download, and read the endorsements, table of contents, foreword by Ed Welch of CCEF, introduction, and first chapter at the CLC Facebook page or watch the video trailer below.

Resisting Gossip at ICRS13

This book thing is getting to be fun!

The International Christian Retail Show (ICRS) is happening this week in St. Louis, Missouri.  ICRS is the largest annual gathering of booksellers in the world. Publishers, authors, editors, agents--all kinds of publishing people gather for a week of finding out what is new and of interest to readers.

Dave Almack, the director of CLC Publications, and his team are present in St. Louis and have set up a table to present CLC books including Resisting Gossip: Winning the War of the Wagging Tongue to interested retailers.
CLC Publications Booth

(To get a sense of how big this event is, go to this link to see the map of the convention center, then put in CLC Publications in the search box to see where our booth is located.)

See the book and the new author picture (by Schenley Pilgram!) in the top left-hand corner? How cool is that?!

Shooting the Trailer for "Resisting Gossip" with Spencer Folmar

It's a great joy to have award winning film director Spencer Folmar visiting his hometown this weekend and shooting footage for a book trailer for Resisting Gossip: Winning the War of the Wagging Tongue.

Do you have any suggestions for how to make a great book trailer?  Leave a comment today because we're going to start movie-making this weekend!

After the trailer comes out, I think I'm going to hire these guys to make it go viral...(or maybe not).

Diane McDougall on "Resisting Gossip"

For the last dozen years Diane McDougall has been teaching me about the art of writing and editing. One of her many roles is serving as the editor of EFCA Today magazine for which I am a regular contributor and the volunteer book review coordinator.

Diane has a nose for a good story and has a secret stash of "magic editor dust" that she sprinkles on some of the clunky stuff I send her that turns it into sparkling prose.

I was blessed to have her editorial eye during the development stage of Resisting Gossip, and I'm pleased to have her endorsement for the book:
“Matt Mitchell did not casually put this book together but asked lots of questions, explored lots of complicated situations and aimed for biblical wisdom that truly applies to all. Great for the home groups at my church to consider walking through together.” – Diane McDougall is editorial director at Journey Group — a custom-content firm in Charlottesville, Va., that helps tell the stories of organizations that do good work. When she's not editing her way out of a cool story, she might be found walking her dog, swing dancing or trying a new recipe.

Image from Billy Alexander at RGBstock.com
Rejoice with me!

The managing editor at CLC Publications told me today that the editing work on Resisting Gossip is officially complete. The book has passed through many hands and many revisions and is now in layout, proofreading, and "final eyes" before being sent off to the printers!

{Whew. Can I take a nap now? That was a lot of work.}

I'm very excited to be able to share it soon with readers.

Thank you, dear friends, who have prayed for Resisting Gossip every step of the way.

Winston Smith on "Resisting Gossip"

Winston Smith of CCEF (not to be confused with Winston Smith of Orwell's 1984) was my doctoral adviser at Westminster for the "Resisting Gossip" D.Min project that spawned Resisting Gossip: Winning the War of the Wagging Tongue.

Winston was always very encouraging and kept his evaluative comments short and grace-filled. Therefore, on those few occasions when he had a word of correction or something to suggest that I really should add, I always took it seriously. Winston has a way of perceiving things that isn't stereotyped, usual, or status quo. He is insightful and creative and has written many helpful books and articles. He's also very funny. A highlight of the CCEF Conference last year was his performance as emcee.

Because of my high respect for him, I was very encouraged to receive his endorsement for Resisting Gossip:
“Gossip is such a pervasive and insidious problem it’s amazing that there are so few resources to help churches deal with its destructive power. Matt's book is an incredibly useful tool that I expect to have wide impact in dealing with the problem of gossip. It is thoroughly biblical, loaded with wisdom, and immensely practical. Just as important, it is written in an engaging and accessible style. I can't recommend it more highly.” – Winston T. Smith

I am starting to get excited about the publication of Resisting Gossip this Fall (September 3 is the big day!).

We are in the final stages of editing, and tomorrow I get to meet with the marketing team at CLC Publications on Tuesday to talk about getting the word out. I hope to get to share the cover with you, too.

(By the way, if you want to get the latest information about the book, including a first peak at the cover, sign up for the Resisting Gossip Update email newsletter. More on that later.).

For the last few years, I've been collecting a file of articles to help me get ready for this next phase of life:
