Jace is 5

It seems as if Jace has been talking about his birthday the entire year.  Probably because he HAS.  He was SO excited to turn five.  It's as if he thought that his entire life would be changed the minute he turned 5.  :)

Following in Carlson family tradition, we threw a huge bash for his fifth birthday, complete with matching shirts.  :)  We decided to have it at McDermotts and I am SO glad we did.  They literally did EVERYTHING for us.  I didn't have to decorate, bake a cake, worry about food or anything.  Pretty ideal for our situation.

In true Jace fashion, we had a little bit of drama as we were leaving before the party.  Jace has gotten into this terrible habit of waking up before 5 in the morning.  It's kind of infuriating because when he gets home from school he is incredibly grumpy.  We asked him to lay down and rest before his party since it was going to go late at night.  He was too excited to sleep, so he was pretending to 'sleep walk' and tripped over the coffee table and slammed his face/chin into the couch.  Three teeth cut his lip open and his gums were bleeding.  His chin started swelling and he was screaming in pain.  Now Jace's pain tolerance is off the charts.  He NEVER says he's hurt and can shake off most anything, so I knew he was really hurting.  He could barely open his mouth and was inconsolable for about 15 minutes.

I called the Dr's office because they were going to be closing soon to see if we needed to bring him in.  She said if he wasn't consolable in 15 more minutes to definitely take him in.  He ended up passing out for like 10 minutes (probably from being in so much pain!) and on our way out I was able to buy him some Ibprofien.  He's pretty good about believing in the miracles of modern medicine so it worked for him and he had a good party.  His chin was still swollen pretty good on Saturday and even yesterday....but today he woke up and it was bruised all over the bottom.  I think we are in the clear for a broken/fractured jaw but it's still scary that it happened!

Life has been flying by...and several things have been happening.  I feel sad that my kids will have this period of their lives LESS well documented...but c'est la vie!  Second semester of nursing school has been more than challenging.  It has been exhausting.  It has really taken a toll on us collectively as a family and kind of exploded in my face a while back.  Details will not be posted here, but we are climbing back up the mountain as a family and hopefully things will turn out better than we ever could have imagined.  I have had to take a step back from school and recognize that I don't need to obsess over getting the A at the sake of my family...B status is OK and I need to let go and be fine with it.  So new game plan is to study when Alli naps on the days Colt is at work.  At to get up early in the morning and study.  If it doesn't fit in during those times, then it is what it is and I will deal with it as it comes!  So far it's been working and I feel more connected all around to everyone in the fam.  It's all about learning to accommodate everyone AND yourself.  Life is a constant learning curve!

So....other news.  Jace threw up in the car on the way to school this morning.  :(  He kept telling me his belly hurt, but he didn't eat much dinner last night so I figured he was just hungry.  And even though his stomach hurt, I had to get Caden to school on time.  So after we dropped Caden off Jace ended up throwing up right before getting to his school.  It was fine, I pulled the car over and got him cleaned off and pulled everything that had throw up out and put it in a bag.  I called him out of school and then we drove home to clean everything up.  Sometimes Jace just has to throw up to feel better, he didn't have a fever or anything, so I knew it wasn't the flu.  When we got home he was chitty chatting and happy as can be.  He was trying to ride his bike and do all things boy...so after a little rest and eating all of his lunch I had packed for him for his breakfast, we headed back to school.  He was fine when I dropped him off and I told his teacher what had happened.  She said if he threw up again she would call!  So far, no phone call so it appears as if all is well.

Jace is learning so much at school!  He can actually recognize numbers now, and amazed me the other day when he was looking at my shoe box and said "So mom, you wear a 7?"  We did a quick little quiz with him and sure enough he nailed his numbers 1-9.  He can count to 20 AND can almost count to 60 using 10's.  He can also write his name, for which I think he is a GENIUS.  His smile took up his whole entire face when he realized how cool it was that he was doing these things.  He holds hands with girls AND boys at recess...and his best little friend has ALL kinds of girlfriends that he 'loves'.  Jace told me yesterday that today was the day HE was going to get a girlfriend.  Oy.

Alli is growing up and sassy as ever.  She has recently discovered screaming when she doesn't get her way and is SO sensitive if you holler at her to stop screaming.  She immediately starts to cry.  She has also figured out a fake cry, that is incredibly obnoxious.  She loves to be indnependent and do things herself and she LOVES to be involved with whatever her brothers are doing.  Caden usually lets her tag along, but Jace is wishy washy with when he will let her hang out.  She thinks grabbing things off the counters is a game...and loves to stick things in her ears.  She calls Colton "MOMMA" and he tries to correct her every time to "Dadda" but she will just sit there and yell "Momma!  Momma!  Momma!" over and over again.  I think she does it on purpose though because when I'm talking to Colt on the phone she will ever so sweetly lean over and say "EEEEYYYYYEEEEE Dada."  She is really great at pretending to have conversations and fluctuates her vocals and everything.  She hates bows and pony tails and rips them out of her hair almost immediately.  She does not like jeans or long sleeve shirts because she doesn't want to feel confined.  She takes one nap a day and is off and on about sleeping through the night.  She is 100% weaned, HOORAY!  She has figured out how to take off her diaper and we are trying to introduce her to the potty.  So far she likes to stand IN it as if it's a step stool...so that will probably be a process but it's never to early to introduce!  :)  She loves to rip things and in fact, as I type this there is a paper towel littered about the floor from her tearing it to shreds.

Caden is just blossoming into this incredible human being.  He is generally the best little boy and is learning how to be responsible.  He really loves reading and LOVES having the highest AR points in his class.  I get emails almost every day saying that he has taken and scored well on at least 1-2 tests a day.  He learned how to ride his bike without training wheels and it has been absolutely life changing for him.  Every day he's out riding his bike for hours.  Colt found a used racing bike and bought it for him and he just cruises around on it.  Yesterday I took their bikes to school for pick up and he was happy as could be that he got to ride his bike home.  He told me he wanted to do it EVERY DAY!  Caden doesn't really like doing chores...but understands that if he doesn't do them, his favorite things get taken away so he will grumble his way through them, just so he can get what he wants.  Smart boy.  :)  He's starting to really want to be around Colt more than me, and I can tell that he is just soaking up everything he sees his dad do.  He is very sensitive about girls, and cried one day when we were talking about kids in his class who had girlfriernds/boyfriends because he doesn't have one yet.  Both Caden and Jace have started loving to wear polo shirts to school, which I think is darling and hilarious at the same time.  They have always been t-shirt wearing dudes, so I don't know if they feel fancy or if they just don't notice, but both of them have been wearing their polos regularly.  They sure do look sharp!

We are currently driving to Venice beach as a detour on our way home from vacation.  Although vacation may not be the most appropriate term for this trip bc with small children a vacation isn't exactly relaxing, ya feel me?  'Memories......'  (In a sing song voice)

The trip started off with Alli throwing up not once, not twice but MULTIPLE times before we were an hour away.  We almost threw up our hands in defeat then and there but decided to press on while I illegally held our sweet vomiting child in the back so she could sleep.  Every now and then she would wake up and dry heave and promptly go back to sleep.  She used up all of her pajamas I had packed on the drive down and I went threw three outfits.

We thought that she just had motion sickness and it would stop, but she ended up the king up the next morning and on our drive to the beach.  She hasn't really been eating anything so I've just been nursing her to help her body get rid if whatever it is that is making her ill.  On this drive to Venice beach she has diarrhea'd on me twice, and I will have to change my shirt AGAIN when we stop.  Holy heavens it sure will be nice to get home!
