Summer Camp 2009 Part I

Living and Learning ...

So my favorite comment about myself is "I'm 27 and I still sleep in bunkbeds in my parents' basement." It can prove to either make me feel worse about myself (I sleep on the bottom bunk because I'm afraid of heights) or make me feel better somehow. I had a conversation with one of my great friends last night after a seemingly useless training at work. The main thing we came up with was that it's all ok. I wouldn't trade my lack-of-formal-education-sleeping-on-the- bottom-bunk-working-two-part-time-jobs-like-I'm-18-again life. Really. And I'm not just saying this. I get to play Screaming Viking with teenagers who teach me more than I'll ever teach them. I still get to pile on Mom and Dad's bed and read scriptures with my parents. I get to figure out what I really want to do with my life before it's already done and I'm stuck. I get to spend time with my wee nephew. I get to learn about compassion and service first hand. (I'm still learning patience....) I get to attend a great ward with great friends. I get to be Kayla.

Ivin Register Holt

Kelly and Jeremy had their wee little laddie. I love him. He's so cute and wonderful and great. I never thought being an aunt would be that big of a deal. I always thought that it would be the same old same old. I have lots of close friends who have kids so I didn't expect to feel any differently towards Ivin as I do towards them. BUT as much as I love those kiddos, there's something different about having your own real live nephew. A little something that makes you carry your camera around all day with you at work ready and willing to force anyone and everyone to tell you how cute he is. It feels good.

Bald Spot

One of our kids at work (a 9 year old boy) learned how to braid last week. He was anxious and excited to show off his new skill. Paige and I (both with short hair!) were his guinea pigs. He braided Paige's hair and was super proud of himself. He sat on the couch by me to braid my hair. As he started to pull the longest part of my otherwise short hair into sections to braid, he stopped and shuddered. "You have a bald spot!" I'm pretty sure I don't. He kept insisting. I've never seen anyone so repulsed by me before! Even after Paige told him the rules for braiding someone's hair ("You can't tell them they have bald spots when you're braiding their hair. It's against the rules.") he was still insisting. After a few minutes of arguing (good naturedly) with him about it, he attempted to begin braiding again. "Oh, Kayla," he said, "Don't worry! It's not a bald spot at all. It's just your forhead." Whew! That was a close one.....

Monday Musings

Will I ever be enough? Will I ever measure up? Always when I'm moving forward and making strides to be who I want to be and who I know the Lord needs me to be that I tend to have HUGE stumbling blocks. Big fat scary ones. The kind that seem insurmountable. Maybe they are. I don't know right now.
