a trip to 2011

Time Travel, 2011, Riots, Arab Spring, OWS, Occupy Wall Street, Egypt, : Dry Bones cartoon.
When I was a kid the future was a wonderful place. Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers, streamlined personal rocket ships, gleaming cities.

So now I'm living in the actual future!!

I love to do Time Traveler cartoons. I think of myself as the guy who got sent into the future and has come back to 1958 with his report. (and it's always a shock to the scientists who are running the operation back in the fifties).

Turning Point

Israel,Iran, America, NATO, Recession, economic crisis, Eurozone, Nukes, Islamism, Bailout, recession, Ahmadinejad,UN,International Atomic Energy Agency, IAEA, report: Dry Bones cartoon.
History can be seen as slow evolution and subtle change, or it can be seen as a series of major "turning points". I think that history will note the world's ignoring of the Iranian threat as one of those turning points!

Terrorism (2001)

Arafat
(2001) Arafat, Oklahoma, Terrorism, Palestinians, U.S.A., Israel, 2001, 2011, Obama, 1967,
Today's Golden Odie cartoon is from June 11 2001. Ten years ago this month.

Lethal Injection:

"Timothy James McVeigh (April 23, 1968 – June 11, 2001) was a United States Army veteran and security guard who became infamous for detonating a truck bomb in front of the Alfred P. Murrah Building in Oklahoma City on April 19, 1995. Commonly referred to as the Oklahoma City Bombing, the attack killed 168 people, injured 450, and was the deadliest act of terrorism within the United States prior to the September 11, 2001 attacks.[3] McVeigh, a militia movement sympathizer, sought revenge against the federal government for its handling of the Waco Siege, which had ended in the deaths of 76 people exactly two years earlier. He also hoped to inspire a revolt against what he considered to be a tyrannical federal government. He was convicted of 11 federal offenses and sentenced to death. His execution took place on June 11, 2001 at the Federal Correctional Complex, Terre Haute."-more

A State of Their Own:

"The Arab League plans to ask the United Nations to grant full membership to a Palestinian state based on borders with Israel that existed before the 1967 Middle East war, according to the state-run Qatar News Agency.

The move comes after President Barack Obama made official the long-held -- but rarely stated -- U.S. support for a Palestinian state based on those borders, a position that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said can never happen.

The 22-member Arab states will seek membership for a Palestinian state -- with East Jerusalem as its capital -- during the next United Nations session in September, according to a statement released through QNA Saturday by the Ministerial Committee on the Arab Peace Initiative." -more

Guess The Question

Egypt, Arab Spring, Sadat, Mubarak, Israel, 2011: Dry Bones cartoon.
Right now I'm away from my studio.
I did today's cartoon before leaving for a U.S. lecture tour.

I'm in America on my "Dry Bones Campaign to turn Z Street into the Grass Roots Zionist Movement that America Needs", and to explain my YIISA (Yale Initiative for the Interdisciplinary Study of Antisemitism) "Secret Codes" findings.

You can keep up with my adventures in the U.S.A. by following me at facebook.com/drybonescartoon.

I plan to return home to Israel in time for for Shavuot (June 7).

NATO Policy

Kitchen demo, NATO, Libya, Islamism : Dry Bones cartoon.
I'm a big fan of Western civilzation. I like the idea of freedom. I'd like to think that NATO's Mideast policy was wise, positive, and likely to make things "better". I drew the cartoon to ask the question. But I'm afraid that I know the answer.

High Hopes

Tunisia, Yemen, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Libya, Revolution, 2011, : Dry Bones cartoon.
We are obviously at a turning point in the history of the Middle East. The problem is that we have no idea what the Middle East is in the middle of turning into.

Your thoughts?

Nobody Knew, Nobody knows

Democracy, Arabs, MSM, Media, Rebellion, 2011, Orson Wells, : Dry Bones cartoon.
Much of the Western Main Stream Media sees the uprisings as positive and pro-democracy. Basically, what we have, they seem to be saying, is a "Happy Ending".

Unfortunately that reminds me of a quote by American film director Orson Wells. When asked about how to make a film with a happy ending, he responded by saying that making a happy ending simply "depends on where you stop your story".

Unfortunately, in the real world the story is not stopping here. It's going on, and nobody knows how and when it stops! And nobody knows if it's going to have a "happy ending".

2011 revolution in Libya, Gaddafi Human Rights, UN : Dry Bones cartoon.
Yup. In May of 2003 the Human Rights Commission of the United Nations elected the ambassador of Gaddaffi's Libya to be its president.

The vote was 33 to 3 in favor.

Spring Speaking Tour

Letters From Dry Bones Posting a cartoon every weekday leaves no room for me to simply share news, ideas, and other stuff with you, so here's a Dry Bones feature called: 'Sunday Mail: Letters from Dry Bones'.

Letters From Dry Bones

Special Notice!!
The planned U.S. Dry Bones tour in May 2011 is now being set up. I'll be preaching the notion that Antisemitism is a "Behavioral Virus", often virally spread through "secret codes" embedded in political cartoons.

It will be based on my work as an "artist in residence" at YIISA (Yale's Initiative for the Interdisciplinary Study of Antisemitism).

I promise to deliver a shockingly educational experience ...along with a few good Jewish jokes.

The tour is sponsored by Z Street and Young Israel.

If your Church, Synagogue, or organization is interested in being a stop on this Dry Bones cross-country trek, please contact Rabbi Pesach Lerner of Young Israel for details:

What Did We Get ? (1980)

Egypt, Sinai, Peace Agreement, Oil, 1980, 2011 Back in 1980, 31 years ago, I asked a question in a cartoon.

Now, in 2011, we're asking the very same cynical question.

Annual Event

viral antisemitism is spread by the annual Israel Apartheid Week : Dry Bones cartoon.
Today is Valentine's Day. An annual event.

Another annual event is today's meeting of the Israel Leadership Mission of the Conference of Major Jewish Organizations. I plan to be there (I've been invited to be on a panel.)

But my mind turned to a third annual event.

It will be the annual hate-fest called Israeli Apartheid Week. Organizers are hard at work at this very moment. It will hit in March with a wave of viral antisemitism. Too bad there's no vaccine to protect the public. Yet.

(But I'm working on it).

Egyptian Elections

Egyptian elections : Dry Bones cartoon.
Current developments in Egypt are obviously a turning point in history. Its full importance will be really understood only by those who will look back at this time and the drama being played out on the streets of Cairo and other Egyptian cities.

As for us, we wait for the next step
...and the future that it will bring us.

And I'm willing to hear yours.

Lebanon (1983)

(1983) Dry Bones cartoon: Syria and Lebanon.
Today's cartoon is from 1983.

In the cartoon, King Solomon, my stand-in for the government of Israel, was worried about the Syrian desire to swallow the independent state of Lebanon.
* * *
Today, twenty seven years later in 2011, The government of Lebanon has fallen into the hands of Hezbollah, the Iranian/Syrian puppet movement. America has lost another ally in the region.

History (1991)

(1991) Dry Bones cartoon: History.
Today's cartoon is another cartoon from 1991.

Mr. Shuldig (my alter ego) sensed that 1991 was an important turning point in world history. What he, and I, did not know was that in a few days there'd be war, that we'd be responding to air raid sirens, wearing gas masks, sitting in rooms sealed with plastic sheeting, and watching missile attacks on our cities as reported live on TV!

And yet here we are twenty years later, in 2011. We did live through it, and as Mr. Shuldig predicted, we are looking back at an "interesting period of history".

Flotilla 2011

Gaza, Turkey, the flotilla, and Iran : Dry Bones cartoon.
According to the Iranian Student News Agency:
Iranian clerics: Gaza-based aid flotilla, factor of Zionist regime's collapse

TEHRAN (ISNA)-"Iranian cleric Ayatollah Naser Makarem Shirazi said Asian aid convoy's movement towards Gaza Strip is one of the factors of collapse of Zionist regime.

The flotilla carrying 130 people from India, Pakistan, Iran, Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, Bahrain and Azerbaijan as well as Kuwait, Lebanon and Jordan is to reach Gaza Strip.

The convoy originating from India has also reached Iran and is now in Syria to arrive in Gaza Strip."
- more

and this from the IDF:
Turkish IHH Continues to Incite Hatred Against Israel

"The Turkish organization IHH, which played a central role in May's flotilla to Gaza, continues to lead its campaign to incite hatred against Israel both in Turkey and abroad, reported the Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center (ITIC) on Thursday (Dec. 30). According to the report, IHH spokespeople have been using their heroic myth of the Mavi Marmara in the campaign and advocating for every Palestinian demand, including that of the return of Palestinians to "Jaffa, Tel Aviv and Haifa." -more
