A Fabulous Moment in Israeli History

2018 is an amazing turning point in history. 

On this, the 70th year of independence of the reborn Jewish State, Jerusalem has been recognized as Israel's capital. The U.S. Embassy has opened.On our border with Syria, the war to stop Iran's expansion into the Middle East has been launched. On the Gaza border, the frustrated Iranian puppet forces are being confronted. America is considering declaring the Golan to be Israeli.  A new friendly relationship with the Saudis seems to be quietly forming. A new Middle East seems to be taking shape. Unity Government, May 2012

Posting a cartoon every weekday leaves no room for me to simply share news, ideas, and other stuff with you. So welcome to 'Sunday Mail: Letters from Dry Bones', an irregular, once-a-weekish Dry Bones feature.

Item One: Sudden Unity Government in Israel:
How to explain the sudden announcement of a unity government in Israel? Charles Krauthammer suggests that we are in for a rerun of Israel's historic year of 1967. It was Israel's 19th year and the Jewish State was isolated and threatened and with extinction. Israel's surprise was launched in June, but preparations were made in May. Land for Words

According to the Christian Science Monitor:

"Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has reportedly agreed to the 1967 borders as a baseline for peace talks in exchange for Palestinians recognizing Israel as a Jewish state."- more

Apparently our Prime Minister would surrender land in exchange for a statement? Not even a promise? Just a statement? "Land for Words"?

When we surrendered Sinai we weren't that naive. We insisted on signed agreements! Of course the signer of those agreements is now on a stretcher in a court in Cairo, facing a possible death sentence, and the signed agreements have gone up in smoke, like the gas pipelines in Sinai.

Terrorism (2001)

Today's Golden Odie cartoon is from June 11 2001. Ten years ago this month.

Lethal Injection:

"Timothy James McVeigh (April 23, 1968 – June 11, 2001) was a United States Army veteran and security guard who became infamous for detonating a truck bomb in front of the Alfred P. Murrah Building in Oklahoma City on April 19, 1995. Commonly referred to as the Oklahoma City Bombing, the attack killed 168 people, injured 450, and was the deadliest act of terrorism within the United States prior to the September 11, 2001 attacks.[3] McVeigh, a militia movement sympathizer, sought revenge against the federal government for its handling of the Waco Siege, which had ended in the deaths of 76 people exactly two years earlier. He also hoped to inspire a revolt against what he considered to be a tyrannical federal government. He was convicted of 11 federal offenses and sentenced to death. His execution took place on June 11, 2001 at the Federal Correctional Complex, Terre Haute."-more

"The Arab League plans to ask the United Nations to grant full membership to a Palestinian state based on borders with Israel that existed before the 1967 Middle East war, according to the state-run Qatar News Agency.

The move comes after President Barack Obama made official the long-held -- but rarely stated -- U.S. support for a Palestinian state based on those borders, a position that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said can never happen.

The 22-member Arab states will seek membership for a Palestinian state -- with East Jerusalem as its capital -- during the next United Nations session in September, according to a statement released through QNA Saturday by the Ministerial Committee on the Arab Peace Initiative." -more

"South America is proving to be a wellspring for support for Palestinian sovereignty after Argentina and Uruguay announced they would join Brazil in recognizing an independent Palestinian state. Moving at a faster pace than the Palestinians themselves, Brazil stated its recognition of the state of Palestine on Friday, and on Monday, Argentine President Cristina Kirchner said in a letter to Palestinian Authority head Mahmoud ‘Abbas that, “The Argentine government recognizes Palestine as a free and independent state within the borders defined in 1967.” Uruguay followed, saying it would begin its recognition of the Palestinian state in 2011." -more

Bibi and Mr. History

Israel's struggle for survival is fought on a "minute to minute" basis. Everything is urgent and immediate.

As we watch our current Prime Minister, Bibi Netanyahu, attempt to resist the pressure exerted by yet another American President, I have the feeling that "we've been in this movie before" ...and for one brief moment I wondered how the longer view from the perspective of history will judge him ...and us.

So I drew today's cartoon.

Monday is Jerusalem Day!
Jerusalem Day is celebrated every year on the 28th of the month of Iyar (in the Hebrew calendar). This year the holiday date falls on June 2. The first Jerusalem Day was celebrated on May 12 1968 to mark the first anniversary of the uniting of divided Jerusalem in 1967. Monday is the 40th Jerusalem Day ...and is an important part of the "Israel at 60" celebrations.

His Place Setting

There's a wonderful anecdote about Abba Eban. Eban was Israel's Foreign Minister in 1967. He was a noted linguist and so, the story goes, when Judea and Samaria were liberated from Jordanian occupation in '67, Eban was invited to speak to a group of West Bank "notables". Eban spoke in classical Arabic. When he concluded, one of the attending Arab leaders and clan heads asked if Eban would now "speak to them in Arabic". The locals, who only spoke the Palestinian dialect of Arabic assumed that Eban had spoken in Hebrew!

I thought of this story yesterday when, at the Jerusalem Conference I heard Israel's current Foreign Minister deliver a speech. It would have been a wonderful speech if only she had been the Palestinian Foreign Minister. She explained that the goal of the negotiations was to establish a viable Palestinian State and that time was not on Israel's side. She spoke of the rights of the Palestinian Arab refugees. She explained that Arabs living in Israel would be satisfied with their national aspirations being fulfilled in the new state of Palestine "next door". As I said, a wonderful speech if only she had been the Palestinian Foreign Minister.

Surely an Israeli Foreign Minister would have focused on recognition of Israel as a Jewish State, spoken of the rights of the Jewish refugees from Arab countries in '48, discussed the future of Jews living in the proposed "Palestinian state" next door, and restated that Jerusalem was and would remain the eternal capital of the Jewish people.

Like those Arabs who had listened to Abba Eban back in 1967, this Jew in 2008 had no idea what the Israeli Foreign Minister was really trying to say.

40 Years Later

It's forty years after 1967. An interesting number. We are taught that we were condemned to wander in the desert for forty years after our liberation and the great exodus from Egypt. It is commonly agreed that it took 40 years for a new generation to arise ...and that having taken Israel out of Egypt it was necessary to "take Egypt out of Israel". What was needed was a tough desert generation to replace the diaspora "galut" Jews that had grown up in Egypt.

These last forty years of our wandering since 1967, however, are different. During most of that time it was our diaspora-born leadership (like Golda, and Begin, and Shamir) that was like a tough desert generation.

Olmert and today's "leadership" are something else.

Do we really, after forty years, now have to rely on Diaspora Jewry to stop an Israeli giveaway of Jerusalem... and the Golan Heights?

Fortieth Anniversary

Typical media coverage of the "mid-east conflict" begins with reporting "an Israeli military action". The situation which brought the Israeli response is under-reported at best.

As I write this, the ongoing and cruel one-sided rocket war being launched from Gaza against us continues to be a non-story for the world's media. It will be, until we respond. This made me think about how we ourselves are often a party to these distortions of history. "Surely the events of May'67 were as important to remember, review, and understand as those of June'67", I thought. And I drew the above cartoon.

So what do you think?

Shouldn't we be viewing the 40th anniversary of tbe events leading up to June'67 with the same importance as the story of "an Israeli military action".

Tourism & Terrorism (1996)

For this cartoon I drew a cool-looking Uncle Shuldig enjoying Israel's sea, sand, and sun. He is wearing swim goggles and standing chest-deep in the Mediterranean Sea. Note the birds flying past in the background and the sun hanging low over the horizon.

Q: How do we know that it is late afternoon and not early morning?
A: The sun, in the cartoon is real low, and since the Mediterranean is on our West Coast we see the sunsets over the sea (but not the sunrises.)
