Best.Semester.Ever

No it wasn't the best because it was easy, because it definitely was not...at all...

It was the best because my friends made it that way. I had all but one of my classes with Dustin and Jaraka, and they kept me alive. We made the following list of our favorite moments:(in no particular order) Which you probably won't find as funny as me...but hey...I had to get through the semester somehow.

  1. In our Organizational Development class, our professor asked Brenda if he could share part of her paper and she straight up said "no, you can't". The professor couldn't tell that she was kidding, until she told him she was serious...I guess he wasn't used to that. It was great.
  2. We had an early morning Saturday meeting for our MBA 544 teams class. It was a long meeting just trying to figure things out, and at one point Jaraka flipped her hair over her face, ran her fingers through it, and flipped it back. At the same time, Josh and Dustin said "wow Jaraka, you have amazing hair." laughter ensued.
  3. We had a late night Wednesday meeting for our MBA 544 teams class. All of you who know me know that I don't function well at night. Consequently, I found everything extremely funny. Jaraka was telling us a story. She said "today I dropped a giant..." but then my hysterical giggling interrupted her. Everyone looked at me like I lost my mind, which I partly had, and through tears I said "I thought you were going to say you dropped a giant deuce today". She finished her sentence to say she had dropped a sign on her foot...I'm so mature.
  4. Again, another late night meeting for the above mentioned class. We were feeling in a rut, so what better to do than have a rolly chair race down the halls of the Tanner building.
  5. My friend Dustin likes to talk a lot in class and participate. He always raises his hand and has something to say. It never bothered me. No one else seemed to contribute. But then during our midsemester feedback for one of our classes, someone had complained to our professor that Dustin dominates the conversations. Dustin was asked by the professor, in front of the class, to no long participate.
  6. For our MBA class, we had a hefty project due. This project included "observation" worksheets where we had to gather data etc for our analysis. Our team was overconfident in one another, and consequently no one really checked on the worksheets to see if they were done correctly or up to par. These worksheets are worth 1 point each. Dustin's worksheet got a score of .25. that's right. POINT 25. "The width of the arrows indicates the amount of communication" it seriously looked like a first grader did it, not a college senior.
  7. In our strategic management class, there is one of those kids.  You know the type, kind of weird and awkward, but thinks he is a little cooler than he is. We were in a stadium like seating room, and Jaraka, Dustin, and I had a clear view of the guys laptop screen. His desktop background was three large pictures of Jesus, with 3 smaller pictures of his wife doing the facebook/myspace face (the one with the lips pushed out and the hair over the face) next to said pictures of Christ. Dustin noticed it first, who pointed it out to me, who gmail chatted Jaraka. The giggling was almost uncontrollable.
  8. Also in our Strategic Management class, we had a business simulation where we had to run our own company and make a bajillion different decisions and anticipate our competitors moves and try to make a profit. It was hard. Garrett, an extremely sarcastic, blunt individual, had a team that was doing awful and had negative profits so far for every round. He offered to say the prayer at the beginning of class. Here is how the prayer went, probably one of the most sincere I have heard "please please PLEASE let our teams make a profit in the simulation" I lost it in the middle of the prayer. His team made a profit every round after that prayer.
  9. For our organizational consulting class, we had a very scatterbrained professor who you had to read his mind to do well in the class. Garret made a google doc and sent it to everyone in the class so we could add our notes to it while the teacher was doing a final review. However, the document turned into a conversation talking about the ridiculousness of the class and the comments made by the professor. All in good fun of course. We actually love that professor.
  10. Jaraka learned to NEVER leave her computer alone in a room with Dustin and I. The first time she did it, we changed her desktop background to a Team Edward Twighlight background. Super gay. Then she did it AGAIN. This time Dustin hacked her facebook and changed her status to say that she had really loud farts and was in class and asked if anyone had any suggestions to ease the pain.
  11. I now have a most embarrassing moment thanks to Dustin. Dustin lovingly calls me Hermione due to my obsessive nature about school and grades. This was a great little inside joke...until I turned in my final for our consulting class. It was an in-class final. We also had an in-class midterm. I was the first person done. Then for the final, I was the first person done again...I even waited around for 10 minutes so someone else could finish so I wouldn't be "that" girl. But everyone was slow, so I stood up, walked to the front of the room, stapled my paper, and heard Dustin yell for the class to hear "Thanks a lot Hermione". The whole class laughed at me. Felt my cheeks turning red...so much love.

Gets Me Everytime...

I love music. I love the power it has to completely change your mood. Not to get all spiritual on you but...

I was having kind of a rough day today, so I thought I would put on some good ol' Mormon Tabernacle Choir (MoTab) to lift my mood.

I don't know what it is about the song "I Believe in Christ" but it seriously gets me every time. Every time we sing it in church, I end up teary eyed, like a goober. It is just so powerful and makes me feel so at Peace and firm in what I believe. I especially love the third and fourth verses:

I believe in Christ – my Lord, my God!
My feet he plants on gospel sod. I’ll worship him with all my might; He is the source of truth and light.
I believe in Christ; he ransoms me!
From Satan’s grasp he sets me free. And I shall live with joy and love In his eternal courts above.
I believe in Christ; he stands supreme!
From him I’ll gain my fondest dream. And while I strive through grief and pain, His voice is heard;
“Ye shall obtain.”
I believe in Christ; so come what may!
With him I’ll stand in that great day, When on this earth he comes again To rule amoung the sons of men.

Here's to music making me feel a hundred ba-jillion times better than I did

One of Those Days

You ever just have one of those days? Like no matter how hard you work, or what you do, it doesn't matter? There will just be a nay sayer, or someone who throws you under the bus, or someone who doesn't appreciate your efforts? Do you ever feel like you are the only one who cares or puts effort into anything?

I wonder a lot why I care so much about succeeding, and why I seem to care more than other people.  Am I the only one who thinks it is considerate to help other people with their parts of the project, even though I don't have to? Everyone just seems to have the attitude: I did my part. I'm done. That is not group work. That is not being part of a team.

I think people know that I care and know that I pay attention to due dates and know that I will do anything (as long as its ethical) to get a great product ready to turn in, so they just let me do it. They also know that no matter how stressed I am or how much I have to do, they can slack and I will make up for it because I want to succeed. Isn't that a catch 22?

Sorry for my rantings. It's just been one of those days. I just wish someone else would care as much as I do. (Also...Aunt Flo's visit is imminent...maybe another contributing factor to my emotions. TMI? Sorry)

Now for some positive things:
I graduate in April
I love Mark alot!
I am physically healthy (mentally healthy too...on most days hehe)
My drive to succeed is a good thing...just frustrating at times
I have the Gospel in my life :)
I live in America
I have great in-laws
I have had the opportunity to gain an excellent education
Fall leaves are pretty!
It's holiday season!

Okay. I feel better. Thanks for letting me rant. I'm done.

Friendship

So...when I came to BYU, I left my two best friends behind. We had been best friends since kindergarten, the three musketeers if you will.

My freshman year I just couldn't find anyone to replace them, not that they are replaceable, but I really needed a friend. I remember I would pray almost daily to just find a girl that I could be friends with and have a good, honest, fun relationship with.

Well, I have been at BYU for 4 1/2 years, and last semester I found that friend that I had been praying for for so long.

Neither one of us are very expressive, and sometimes I wonder if our friendship is only school deep (we have all of our classes together). I don't know everything about her, and she doesn't know everything about me. But then there are days like today when I know that we are more than school friends. School brought us together, but it is not what keeps us together.

When I have a bad day, she is one of the first people that I want to talk to.
We are so similar she understands me better than most others, but different enough to push each other to grow.
I can be open and honest with her.
She is one of the first girls that I truly believe wouldn't talk bad about me. She would tell me herself.
She inspires me to be confident.
She plays lego harry potter with me.
I find myself wholeheartedly wanting her to be happy and get everything she wants.
It makes me sad to think that we won't always be within walking distance of each other, or see each other everyday.

Here's to you Jaraka Drew! :) I'm glad that we're friends and can laugh and cry together.

Things to Remember

So I have learned a few lessons lately that apply to all areas of my life: school, work, family etc and just wanted to record them so if I ever forget, this will help me remember.

  1. There is a difference between being helpful and taking over. It is hard to recognize that sometimes. At times I think that I am doing someone a favor, but I am really hurting their feelings.
  2. Communication is key. This kind of goes with #1. What I see as being helpful, someone else sees as me taking over. I just need to clarify what that person actually wants me to do, instead of just assuming I am doing the right thing to help them.
  3. Frequent feedback is much better than letting things build up and explode. It is so much easier to have a few little conversations than one big one.  This goes for me giving it to other people, and other people to me. If I am doing something you don't like, or that hurts you, just tell me! I won't get offended, and I can't change until I know what to change. I just want to make people happy.
  4. Patience is a virtue and I need it. Just because I can do something faster, doesn't mean that is best. I need to let other people grow and do their own thing, even if they don't get to it before I do. It is okay to not have something completely done a few days before it is due. I need to give people time to finish things, even if I think they should be done sooner.
  5. Relax. Take it easy. Everything gets done in the end, and it doesn't require me to do it all.
I have realized after a talk with someone, even if they say they are okay, I just want to hug them. I guess I am a hug it out kind of person. We both said our peace, we're over it, and it is time to hug! yay!
It always amazes me all the things that I can be doing to improve. I don't mean that in a desperate, I'll never be perfect way...but more in a "there are ways I can be better, and I like finding them out" way. Everyday is a day to improve!

    Struggles and Peace

This past Sunday I have finally come to peace with the course that my life is going to take.

I have this over ambition issue. I have dreamed of being in the business world since 2nd grade. When my teacher asked us what we wanted to be when we grew up, I said "A CEO". I have always been very very school and career driven. The past 17 years of my life have been spent working my butt off to succeed in school so I could succeed in a career.

The thought of contributing to a company, being surrounded by other ambitious/successful people, making deals, helping clients, all of it sounds so great to me!

That being said...that ambition in life doesn't really correspond well with being a stay-at-home mother. I thought about not being a stay at home mother, but that was just selfish of me. I understand when both parents have to work to support a family, but I shouldn't want to work just for the sake of working and fulfilling my own career goals. I was never the girl in church that only wanted to be a stay at home mom or fought over the chance to hold a baby in the ward. That just didn't appeal to me...and looking back I think the reason that it didn't appeal to me is that I was/am scared to death of being a mother. I have always been great at school, but I have no experience with being a mother and I'm mortified that I won't be good at it.

Now that you have a little background, you can see my struggle. For the past few years (especially since I got married) I have been dealing with my ambition to be a successful career woman and my duty to be the best mother that I can be. This past year, the internal conflict has been especially bad. Mark and I have had several long talks (and long prayers) and we have decided that once I finish my undergrad, I will work until we have kids and then stay at home with them if we are financially able. The hardest part about this means no more school. I won't go on to get a law degree or an mba within the next few years, which is what my plan has always been. Of course higher education is definitely an option in the future (like when our kids start grade school) but it just isn't want I need to be doing right now in my life. I realized at the beginning of this semester, shortly after we made this decision, that I was being short and impatient with Mark and just had this feeling of bitterness and regret inside. I realized that this was due to the fact that I was bitter that starting a family meant that I would have to give up my dreams of a graduate degree and fast-paced career. (At least for the time being.)

I'm not saying that this path is the only right one, or the one for everybody. I know several successful mothers and women that have worked while raising a family. It is my personality (i.e., my obsession with perfection and being the best at what I do) that keeps me from being able to successfully manage that. I am afraid that I would get caught up at work and being successful there and neglect my family.

So I was taking this bitterness out on Mark. It is 100% not his fault. I chose to get married and knew when I got married that I would have to make sacrifices for my new family. This is one of those sacrifices, and I was not handling it well. I couldn't get over my bitterness. I had the attitude that I was giving up what I wanted to do, to do something that I know I need to do (be a mother).

Then Sunday changed my life. Literally. Elder Oaks and his wife came to BYU to have a little devotional with the student body. Sister Oaks's talk wasn't about motherhood, or being a good mother, but there was just one little statement she made that changed everything. Sister Oaks got married when she was 53. She had a phd and super successful career, so she has experienced everything I want to experience. But then she said this(and I am paraphrasing): I have had a a successful career, but nothing compares to the joy and accomplishment you feel of raising a family.

I actually teared up when she said that. Like I said, her talk had nothing to do with this particular topic so I wasn't expecting to feel any better about my predicament afterwards. Hearing a woman who has had both, a successful career and the opportunity to raise a family, say that really hit home to me. I don't think it would have meant as much coming from a woman who had never had a career.

Ever since Sunday I have felt so much relief and happiness and peace with my decision. I can put all the ambition and determination I have put into my schooling into being an amazing mother. It won't be easy, and I will make mistakes, but that is okay. I know that raising a family is my next adventure in life, and I am totally okay with that. No regrets.

    Seester

Once a year simply isn't enough. I have to see you more!

You make me laugh so hard that I start to cry.

You make me smile so big it hurts.

    You make me feel confident.

    You make me feel special.

I love talking to you about everything under the sun...our family, your family, how hot it is outside, the good ol' days when you were my "mom".

I love my little mermaid pedicure ;)

I love the knowledge you give to me and the wise tips you pass down to your little sister.

I love that you have always been there for me, through thick and thin.

I love knowing I can pick up the phone and call you anytime and you will answer, but most importantly understand.

And finally, I love that you let me do this to your kids hair:

    The Luckiest

No, our marriage isn't perfect, yes we have our differences, but I love him more than anything.

My favorite thing is that he makes me laugh. every. day.

Whether it is him wearing his safety glasses when I had to wear my awful real glasses to make me feel better, or putting goggles on in the shower, or lying on the couch and realizing he forgot to turn off the light and clapping for our butler (that we don't have) to turn the lights off, or teaching me how to laugh at myself, Mark brings a smile to my face constantly.

I am so lucky to have a guy that makes me see the good in life, and taught me how to laugh at all the little things.

    Mmmm Sundays

We love Sundays at the Brandley household. Mark and I don't do homework on Sunday...we like to focus on other things and it is sooo nice to have a day with no school or work and to be able to enjoy each others company all day :)

This past Sunday was a BEAUTIFUL day...which sadly have been in short supply so far this summer with all the rain. Mark and I grabbed a blanket, our books of choice, and decided to drive up the canyon to Big Springs Park. We normally go to the park to ride the mountain biking trail, but thought we would go for a little R and R this time.

The river we laid our blanket next to...

Some handsome guy I found on my blanket... ; )

Readin some Harry Potter on my phone (I sure am re-reading all 7 before the 7th movie)

Mark's book of choice was "Into the Wild"

And this pic is from this past winter that I never got around to posting. Utah may be Utah...but you have to admit it is a beautiful place.

    Yummy Yummy in my Tummy

Mark and I made....wait for it....rainbow cake!!! It is super fun to make and looks pretty cool to boot...

You just buy a box of vanilla (or funfetti) cake mix, doctor it up a little with special ingredients (sour cream etc) and dye the batter and shazam! Rainbow cake is yours. Sorry I'm too lazy to post the recipe...but I'm pretty sure you can just google search it...

Somewhere deep deep deep DEEP down

Somewhere deep deep deep deep DEEP down, Mark has a sweet, thoughtful side :) Don't get me wrong, he says sweet things to me and tells me he loves etc etc everyday. But it is a real treat when he surprises me and does  something! I got home from school/work and this is what I found on the table:

If you can't read it it says, "I thought you may need some brain food to help you PUNCH those finals, projects, and papers in the face!!"

    1. Mark knows how stressed I am right now. I am two projects down, one more and two more papers to go in the next 6 days...and then finals begin!
    2. Mark also knows that I LOVE sour punch straws :)
What a sweet heart...even if he doesn't like to admit it :)

    Lost it in 'nam

So...I love country dancing. LOVE it. Before Mark and I got married I went almost every Wednesday and Saturday night (I am lucky that he isn't the jealous type and knew how much I loved him so he didn't mind that I went dancing without him) Unfortunately for me...I married a guy who doesn't dance :( But am I a quitter? NO! Every now and then I bring up country dancing...and try to convince Mark that he would have a great time if he took me dancing. Well...on the way home from the store the other night this is our conversation:

    Me: Mark, take me dancing.
    Mark: Can't
    Me: How come?
Mark: Well, I lost my right foot in 'nam, and they replaced it. Unfortunately, when they replaced it, they replaced it with a left foot. Now I have two left feet.

    From 0 to 10 in 0 days

    Here's how it went down:

Me: Hey Meliss! You're still training for your half-marathon right?
    Melissa: Yup
Me: Are you running this weekend, if so how far?
    Melissa: 10 miles
    Me: Okay! Count me in!
    Melissa: Have you been running?
Me: Well, I ran 3 miles like two weeks ago...

Guess what guys?! I ran 10 miles and made it all the way, and felt pretty good the whole way. That's right. However...when Melissa and I stopped running so we could cool down about a block from the house...I realized my mistake. As soon as my legs stopped going, I realized I was shaking and literally could barely walk. I stopped in my tracks, looked at Melissa, and said "Holy Moly Meliss, I can't walk, my legs are shaking!" Melissa's response you ask? "Well I can't piggy-back you. Come on" So I slowly, painfully, walked the block. Then I saw the huge hill (okay really it was the gentle slope of the driveway...) and exclaimed "I don't think I can make it up this hill!" At this point Melissa and I started laughing really hard, only to add to my discomfort. Who knew laughing could take so much out of you? We grabbed some refreshment and went straight upstairs to our "hot tub" a.k.a the bath tub in the master bedroom. We threw on our swim suits and hopped right in.

The next few days were spent limping around the house.

    Totally worth it.

    Snow Shoeing=Fun

    Tis the Season

We had the best Christmas Season ever! It started with Matt getting us awesome tickets to the Christmas Devotional in Salt Lake. Here is our Christmas in pictures :) Brandley's leg wrestle, have a Tommy Right gift exchange, and the nativity as part of their traditions. Or should I say...OUR traditions since I am a Brandley after all ;)
