The long voyage in search of neuroanatomical correlates for mental illness has faced choppy waters. A new report by Cao et al. illustrates this turbulence by quantifying low replicability in brain structural-magnetic-resonance-imaging maps for five psychiatric diagnoses. Thankfully, this finding helps to strengthen existing currents that are already moving the field towards newer approaches that promise smoother sailing.
