Nacho Libre
Never saw it when it came out. It’s a fave of my sister’s girlfriend (Hispanic) and she wanted us to watch it with her. It was fine, about what I expected out of that genre out of 2006. Probably less raunchy than it would have been with anyone else running it instead of Jack Black.
The best outcome was that led to us discovering it was loosely based on a real-life luchador / priest, Fray Tormeta (wikipedia link).
I think Nacho is a great movie. I kind of equate to Napoleon Dynamite because it has a, imo, similar indie/awkward vibe to it, with some similar shot framing too.
I guess kind of paired to Be Kind Rewind era. Though I wish it was better that it really is.
Which movie do you wish were better, Nacho Libre or Be Kind Rewind? Or both? I have very vague recollections of Be Kind Rewind, but, if that’s the one you’re referring to, I’d tend to agree. I seem to recall a lot of the marketing was centered around the main duo’s attempts to “Swede” movies with no production budget. As I recall, that’s certainly present in the movie, but it’s not really the focus to the extent I wish it were.
Nacho Libre I haven’t seen at all, so I’ll take y’all’s word on that front.
Yep, the second one. The concept was fun, but I think they tried to bundle a series of ideas that made the whole experience a disjointed and half baken film.
Went and watched the first Knives Out. “Fun” murder/mystery. It even gets an offhand remark relating the house to Clue. Looking forward to the other ones out.
The sequel is good too, though it’s not nearly as satisfying a mystery as the first, which I felt was to film’s detriment (even if that’s sort of the point).

Both directed by Guilermo del Toro.
Frankenstein was what I expected from this director. A nicely produced steampunkish, very slightly “horror” retelling of the story with medium depth. Good entertainment.
Nightmare Alley I haven’t finished watching yet. It does not fall into the typical mold of medium-depth entertainment - at least not yet. Or maybe I’m just sick of hearing that all-too-American story of a poor guy who made it big by leaving any sense of ethics by the side.

Man this was one fucked up tale. It has long been said that if you want to murder someone use your car. This women did.
The prosecution did some bullshit overplaying of her social media and it is completely unclear why she did it. Thing is she did. She turned that car into a weapon and killed those two guys.
I watched the Mortal Kombat movie I wanted them to make 30 years ago and it was magnificent. I only casually played at arcades as a kid but I still recognised a few moves and combos, really enjoyed how efficient it was (they know you’re there for fun fights, not a bunch of character development) and just had a great half cut time.
Wasteman (2025), i don’t exactly love prison movies (Riki-Oh the exception) so it was a bit out of my wheelhouse, but a solid watch. good tension, good performances.
