The best thing for any democracy is to stop burning time, effort, energy, resources, and money as though it was necessary. Power, twisted into an end in itself, undermines the premise of representation.

If this totalitarian, Epstein-class, trillionaire-focused, bubble-generating, war-mongering, orphan-crushing, capitalistic, red-hat-cult, machismo-laden, late-stage, ecocidal kakistocracy has taught us nothing else: representation and empowerment oughtn’t be cudgels. Representation and empowerment yield all blessings.

Im reading the Burnout Society by Byung Chul Han. Its very short and very engrossing and demands to be read and re-read in its first reading.

The book I’m listening to is Read Dangerously by Azar Nafisi. Her perspective on Iran, the US, and the shape and reactions of totalitarian power are striking. Its also nice to have an author share her perspective on some books that I’ve read. These include:

• The Price of the Ticket by James Baldwin,

• the Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood,

• Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Thurston,

• Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates, and

• the Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie.

Reading some of the books she references helps in the reading of this book.

Saved! was the first film of hers that I saw after Donnie Darko. It’s a good one. Mandy Moore as the “holier than thou” mean girl was excellent. The film deals with teen pregnancy differently than most. Not as heartwarming as Juno. Pairs well with the documentary film Jesus Camp.

Adding on: this is one of my favourite diagrams for the flow of carbon through the carbon cycle. It is a predictor for the amount of energy that managed by the Earth’s spheres (atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, cryosphere, geosphere) under the greenhouse effect.

You cam read more about this, and very accessibly, in Naomi Klein’s Doppelganger. The shape of “the upside-down” world of “alternative facts” and “post-truth” advocates goes a long way toward explaining why people on opposite sides of this divide have literally different realities.

I also recommend The Age of American Unreason by Susan Jacoby. Though dated, it was published in 2007, its merits outweigh its quaint picture of the scale of corruption, ignorance, and deception we now experience.

Oddly, these two movies are both written and directed by Richard Linklater (though A Scanner Darkly is adapted from a novel of the same name by Philip K. Dick)

I only recommend to follow your interests. Reading the blurbs will ruin nothing. I saw the Power of Nighmares, then found out about Century of the Self. HyperNormalisation came out soon after I finished those. I have so many more to see.

This was nearing the end of my “predominantly documentaries” phase of viewing films. I was geographically limited in being able to access them as freely.

Now, I’m piling a lot of information into my head from books. My focus is on Canada’s journey toward Reconciliation, the crime of genocide, and the power structures that facilitate crimes against humanity.

Like, I know I should just read Hannah Arendt, but I havent gotten to her yet.
