With global trade and most of all the internet, we already have and need it. We have the WTO and the ICC, plus many _very_comprehensive trade agreements. I would honestly rather have that governed by a democratically elected governing body than whatever it is now.

I think the right to be forgotten in the EU is a very interesting case in this regard. To recap: the right to be forgotten is the concept that if someone is associated with something they don’t like in the news, they can make a request to be “forgotten” by search engines (yet not by the news sites themselves which I find a tad odd, but anyway). There was a later court case where someone had used a VPN to look up something and as such appearing to be outside of the EU, and the court ruled that even in that case Google wansn’t allowed to serve up those results. So, essentially, it is applied to people around the world. What happens when a country implements, let’s say, for instance, an anti-censorship law that forbids artificially removing or housing search results? Oops. This is the kind of thing we could use a global government for. But again, very great care has to be taken to ensure that it is a well functioning democratic system.

Shiftphone actually does that. Since the shift6mq (I think) they have used that same battery for just about everything. Yeah, it’s their own model, but it’s a step in the right direction.

+1 for mbin. The dev(s?) doesn’t seem to be as problematic as the Lemmy dev and it federates with a whole range of fediverse systems. The only real complaints I had with it turned out to be me misunderstanding how it works (for instance not noticing that some of the stuff on my feed is Peertube since it’s just really well integrated), so now that I understand that, I’m extremely happy with it.

Hot take: biometrics are often criticized for being less secure, but that ignores the deficiencies of passwords. Especially on phones, it’s very doable to look over someone’s shoulder while they’re unlocking their phone or do the same with a camera. You can’t do that with a fingerprint, at least not nearly as easily.

And yes, I understand that in the US (amongst others?) the legal situations with passwords and biometrics are different, but IMO that’s more of a legal question, and not everyone lives in the US.

Android also has an “emergency lockdown” option, which disables biometrics for unlocking your phone - or you can shut it down (worst case scenario force shut down with a long hold on the power button) to get it into a BFU state, which is much harder to crack.

There are permissive licenses, and then there are copyleft licenses. Permissive licenses go in the direction of “do whatever the fuck you want”. Copyleft licenses are more like “use it for whatever the fuck you want but if you change it give it back to everyone else with the same conditions”. The people who have projects with copyleft licenses are the ones who are (rightfully) pissed about their projects being used to train AI.

What carbon capture is being hailed as a solution for is exactly the wrong use. Carbon capture is currently being seen as a way to continue polluting because - “hey, look, we’re pumping carbon into the air but where taking it out of the air elsewhere, making it net zero”. Essentially, it’s being used as an excuse to not reduce or eliminate emissions, which just pushes us down the path we’re on.

IMO, carbon capture does have a use - to try to fix what we’ve already fucked up. We’ve done a lot of damage with fossil fuels, and we’ll never really get to the “before times”. But we can use carbon capture to try and fix what little we can.

I have to be fair, though: that apology was one of the most decent public apologies I’ve seen in the last while (OK, I get it, it’s a low bar, but still). Full admission that it was wrong (no “sorry if you didn’t like it” bullshit), no blaming it on someone else, no trying to say “it wasn’t really that bad”.
