Which are very good medicines used successfully to fight obesity. Let’s not blame the medication here. They however should be used by people who are actually struggling with obesity and not already fit people who want to lose weight for esthetic reasons. And why a doctor would ever prescribe them to someone who is clearly already under weight and possibly struggling with an eating disorder is beyond me.

Also I don’t believe she is using any of those kinds of drugs. These kinds of eating disorders are mental health issues and have been recognized as such for decades. People have been suffering from this kind of thing long before weight loss medication became a reality. You don’t need your body to tell you not to eat if your mind already does so.

Old people in cars are the worst. Just yesterday I was at a medical center to pick up some medication. An old lady rolls up with an absolute huge Merc SUV, this thing is like a tank and didn’t even properly fit in the parking lot. So this lady pulls into a spot, she’s about 45 degrees in the spot. So she backs out and tries again, straighter this time, but she doesn’t stop and keeps driving. The rows in the parking lot are separated by a little kerb and a hedge row. This lady plows over the hedge, destroying it. Then reverses, pulling the hedge back with a terrible crunching sound. She goes in and out of the parking spot till she gets it sorta right. She had just about enough room to open the door on her side, luckily the spot on that side was empty otherwise she would have probably not been able to open the door. The other side someone was parked, and they had maybe 5cm of clearance en would not be opening their doors while she was there.

The lady probably has such a big car, because it makes her feel safe. Which is true, they are much safer. But only for her, for the rest of the people in the street they are lethal. These huge cars shouldn’t be allowed and old people who can’t even park shouldn’t be as well. But alas both are and it’s a danger to everyone.

Or the economy crashes by AI replacing everyone and doing an absolute terrible job, causing stuff like supply chain collapse and communication/power outages.

I have yet to see someone explain how this whole thing actually works out. Just a dozen different scenarios that turn out terrible for almost everyone. The only scenario that works out is if a handful of people like Altman absolutely rule the world, become de facto dictators as they are the ones that control the few AI companies that run everything. And by work out, I mean it works out for that handful of people. For the rest of the world it’s probably just about the worst case scenario. But you just know it’s the scenario scammy Altman is hoping for.

I listen a lot to deep house and similar kinds of music. Sometimes artists make tracks that are easily 10+ minutes long. And DJs create mixes that are hours long. Each track and mix is like a story, it has a beginning, middle and end and takes me on a journey. I feel like I’m on vacation and the DJ is my tour guide. Tickling my brain with different rhythms and instruments, here is this one, now it’s gone, here is another one, now it’s gone, here is the first one again and in comes the second one. I feel the layers of the track inside of me, letting me feel like floating in the ocean, till the drop comes and the DJ pulls me into the deep water, taking me on a ride. Till I pop out the other end and we calm down again, slowly sliding into the end of the song.

That’s what music is to me, emotion, experience. It’s one soul telling a story to another soul, using our limited communication methods. I’ve heard people who are into for example classical music describe the same thing.

But I also feel like there is a huge difference between actually listening to and enjoying music for music sake and having something on in the background while doing some construction work, or having a casual pool party/bbq or something like that. In those cases it’s usually just some random pop slop and to be fair with today’s pop music I would not be able to tell you if it’s AI generated (except for obvious tells like nonsense lyrics, but when I’m doing other stuff I might not even hear the lyrics fully). That said, I still think AI music is really really bad, I just feel modern pop music is bad as well (with notable exception obv and personal opinion is a thing, no shade on pop enjoyers)

Thanks, I usually know what it is tho. Most often it’s VMs I was using for testing stuff, which I forgot to shutdown. It takes a while for them to cleanly shutdown, which is what the wait is for. I have a shortcut on my desktop to a script that checks for any running VMs still and shuts them down. But I forget to click it sometimes and then I have to wait. No big deal, except I like to switch off the power bar that powers the computer and everything attached to it. An old habit from when such a thing mattered, these days standby power is probably nothing to worry about. But still I wait patiently for the computer to shut down till I switch off the power strip.

Well you say that, but I’ve seen the countdown go past and then reset to a higher number often.

This is 100% AI my dude. Everything about it is so wrong. The cord going through the side of the pool, the bizarre looking hedge trimmer and the very weird hand holding that trimmer in an impossible way. There’s also a pot in the back that just ends right where the trimmer is in the picture for no reason (except the AI messing up). And of course there’s the hand in the water with what looks like five fingers.

You are right when it comes to LLMs. However these weather AI models are created by climate scientists and meteorologists, along with a whole bunch of maths nerds. I have a friend that works on these kinds of systems for our local meteorology service. He’s a 100% maths nerd.

Calling these things AI is very unfortunate. They’ve been using these kinds of machine learning algorithms for decades, long before the time of ChatGPT. The label AI has been applied to it from a computer science point of view, but these days people associate AI with LLMs. I can’t stress enough how these models are NOT LLMs, they aren’t used like one would use LLMs and it isn’t like they prompt the model “Give me the weather pls kthxbye”. It gets fed HUGE amounts of data and outputs HUGE amounts of data, all of that data gets used by actual scientists to create the forecasts.

Please note these “AI” weather models have nothing to do with “AI” LLMs. Weather models are actually exactly where you want to use machine learning models. It’s huge amounts of data and we know there’s patterns in there, but they are too chaotic for us to easily get from the data. Large machine learning models can parse all of the data and use the model they create to feed in current data and get predictions on future data. There’s all sorts of neat maths you can get involved and with the very powerful hardware available these days, plus the huge improvements in software to drive that hardware, means weather prediction is getting better fast.

It’s kinda sad all machine learning gets the “AI” label these days. And sure these models make mistakes, sometimes big ones. That’s why often multiple models are used and people are involved to see the most likely one. And the truth is these models are doing better than the old models did. It’s the weather after all, it’s a chaotic system with a huge number of variables, it’s basically impossible to get it right all of the time. But at least where I live, it’s been getting very accurate, especially in the 24-48h range. The 5 day prediction is also getting better, but still gets it very wrong sometimes.

What is the point of creating a new frontier model? Even if you create something that is actually better than the rest (which is hard), it probably won’t be that much better people are going to switch by themselves. Which means you need to heavily discount the price in order to get people to use it at all. This means not only do you need to front the investment to develop the model, and of course all of the marketing costs, but then also running at a loss for at least the first while. And let’s say somehow people go along with you increasing prices once you get people on the platform (which is a big ask) to the point you get a modest profit, the amount of upfront investment would take years and years to make back.

Meanwhile everyone and their uncle is also working on their new frontier model and will be very tempting for your customers to switch to. Especially once you start increasing prices to get profitable. Users have shown very little to no brand loyalty and just use whatever. There’s so many options available and all offer about the same in terms of UI and functionality.

Google is combining their AI stuff with their products, which is good for adoption, but people aren’t willing to pay much for that. Microsoft was really well positioned to bundle it with their stuff, but somehow not only got in hot water with governments over them forcing users to use their AI stuff, but also didn’t get users to use or pay for their AI stuff at all. The same story for others, getting adoption only works with very low prices or even free stuff. Even then it’s hard and people switch quickly once prices go up. Companies are now also much more aware of the price of these things and the lack of ROI, so I would expect spending to go down in the future.

If you want to be pedantic, at least be extra pedantic about it.

It’s all about the meaning of the word get. They aren’t literally getting a free ride, since the fee is not for the ride. They pay the fee to be eligible for the free ride. So they are actually paying to be on the list, not to use the service.

But if you want to go one level deeper, in a world running on a capitalist system, nothing can ever be truly free. In the end everything is funded from the economy and we all contribute to the economy in some way.

With the amount of productivity gains we made the past few decades we could all easily work 4 days a week. Except all of that extra productivity has gone fully to the 1% instead of to the general public and infrastructure we need.
