    Coincidentally, we’re heading to Guatemala soon. I was surprised at how high the lodging costs are. Not that they are overly expensive, just higher than I expected.

    Not going for long, and no plans to go to Gualan so can’t use that specific deal. Surprised to see such a good deal though!

      you’re staying in Guatemala city? It’s the largest city in Central America, so the prices there are higher than you’d guess, but there are still plenty of 450 to 500 USD per month apartments.

      i can check airbnb prices in the city for you if you’d like. the main city is eh because the traffic is nuuuts, but all the mountains and volcanoes and tiny towns are great. Sol and Panajachel at lake atitlan are super greeeat, everyone in Guatemala will tell you to go there and you should if you get the chance.

        We’re just in Guatemala City for a couple of days. We’re also going to Antigua and Monterrico.

        What/where is Sol? Lots of results for Sol, unsurprisingly. Nothing stuck out as the obvious choice to me. Panajachel looks great! I doubt we’d make it there this time around, but it’s not a difficult place to get to.

          Ah, cool. Antigua’s great. Pricey as the main tourist hotspot, but absolutely beautiful ringed by volcanoes and hot tip, the eastern and northeastern side of the city are at a slightly higher elevation than the rest of Antigua, so if you go to the northeast you can see much more of the famous volcanoes and better vistas than you can from the rest of the city.

          Sol is the beautiful, fun town right before you descend to Panajachel and Atitlan. One bus stop up from Panajachel.

          Panama rooocks too if you have any extra time in South America, such good food. Go down to the coast and feed the coastal raccoons living in the concrete piles, they’re the best, wild but very tame and you can feed them snacks from your hands. Panamanian kids and adults do it all the time.
