How long do you think they’ll listen to you explaining all the systemic wrongs to them until their eyes glace over as there’s no simple solution?

Largest funding for a government law enforcement organization and still can’t afford a translator? Having a minor family member translate is never acceptable. That’s why hospitals and other services hire translators. An org that by definition handles immigrants must expect such a requirement.
And don’t come at me with “learn English when you come here”. It’s not their responsibility that the law gets enforced effectively and lawfully. It’s ICE’s and they fail horribly at it on a daily basis. They need to see consequences.
I’ve got two devices online and I have no idea what’s next. Nothing ever happens on the network.

1:12 is the funding ratio. Ad space is littered with her ads.

Open source is fine, but if we depend on badly funded one man projects with a maintainer about to burn out, we’ve created an extremely fragile system.
The argument is of course that anyone can just pick up a project, fork it and make it better, but we have to remain realistic how often a tech stack can survive a fragmentation of an important project. Compatibility and interoperability is vital.
This can and maybe even should happen once in a while, but if it happens too often it’ll do damage to the userbase.

Yes, you’re right, but I would go a step further: what we’re afraid of that a non-human, misaligned intelligence is going to do to us, a non-intelligent, misaligned human economic system is already doing.
This shit will destroy us and it doesn’t even need to be very sophisticated to do so.

That punch was to save a female reporter from being harassed. Jesse Watters really has a problem with women.

Welcome to the insurance scheme, I guess.

True. My grandma would be the same were she in the war room with the generals.

Absolutely true. Tech companies and others love to conflate them. It’s also a money thing: Idiots with too much money (that we should probably tax to use for something useful) want to invest in AI, so if I’ve been working on a project that needs funds, I just rebrand it as “AI”, even if it just runs on more traditional ML principles.

In Switzerland I pay 40CHF (~49USD) yearly to get a free helicopter evacuation in case of an accident. Never needed it, but I know people that have. Absolutely worth it. While it’s “just hiking” in most cases, being out in nature in the middle of nowhere can get dangerous fast.

It’s a second dark age approaching. It’s slow, maybe not in our lifetime but with the enormous pressure of climate and demographic crisis add the regression of human cognition and destruction of researchable truth and you will get a collapse of the global economy and a shift in priorities (survival first) that will bring a dark age.

This is fundamentally different than chat bots and the anti-AI movement needs to learn this to be effective.
Shot, man, shot.

If you want to align virtual content with the real world in any way you need a camera attached. Sure, you can use the display for notifications and content that doesn’t care where you’re facing, but having a display attached to your face is a too juicy scenario not to do more with it.

You don’t need crimes or due process if you send them to an illegal prison. That’s the whole point of an illegal prison.
With shit like this “protecting democracy” or “preserve our institutions” sounds so fucking hollow. “Protect our way of life” becomes a fascist dog whistle than just an actual desire for security.

Yup, if his world views are not contradictory it means the Utopia he talks about is not for everyone. He even may not properly be able to explain it, because he leaves out that crucial point that there’s an underclass that will be exploited, managed, killed or whatever else is necessary to achieve his utopia for the few.
We should send him to the dark side of the moon where the Nazis belong to.

Cars ruin cities in general.

We gotta start building alternatives already. Us being here on Lemmy is already a start.
And hopefully these protocols are backward compatible so I can still use a limited feature set running an older version. I think this would be a big step towards avoiding any fragmentation.
I hate when software supports up to an arbitrary version number and if you just fake the version string in your client or framework it just works fine. Why set up arbitrary hurdles?
