The reason this is important and timely is because the messaging around these tools implicitly suggests there is an air of authority and integrity it would be impossible for them to have given that no journalists have examined and analyzed the mechanisms of these tools at any stage of their development.

In fairness, a lot of news organisations are run without input from adequate journalists.
Why on earth would a journalist need to have input on authentication tools??
Surely this would be more suited for a cybersecurity expert?
Not that I’d trust an AI-based authentication system anyway.

It’s also not a commonly-used term. “AI authentication” mostly refers to using machine-learning AI as an authentication method (eg image recognition, behavior observation, etc.)
This sounds more like just “fact checking”.

Getting your BA doesn’t qualify you to do code security reviews. Most journalists get that information from people who are qualified to do so.
