Russia will require migrants to buy mobile phones so authorities can track their whereabouts, Deputy Interior Minister Igor Zubov said, according to the Russian business news outlet RBC:

Everyone’s interested in what the future holds, in where we’re headed. Every migrant who registers here on arrival — especially for work or for a long stay — will be required to buy a phone. That phone will hold their electronic profile. And we will know the location of every migrant.

As a result, Zubov said, migrants will be unable to move from one city to another “uncontrollably.”

Since September 2025, Moscow has been running a pilot program that requires every foreign national who has come to work in the city to install an app called “Amina,” which shows their location. If it receives no geolocation data for three straight days, the person is dropped from the registration rolls.

Russia has migrants? As in people that want to move there? 😵‍💫

Yep. There are countries even shittier than Russia, it would seem.

You know what’s also super woke? Phones that Russia can’t track. At least for migrants

Weird that Germany is the single most popular country of origin.

Not that weird. Some east Germans are weirdly nostalgia about their time under soviet rule.

There had to be some winners in those countries right? Like they raised some folks outta poverty. And I bet a ton of folks were happy that everyone was equally broke in a we are all in it together kind of way.

Yeah, you often hear stuff like “back then, we stuck together and helped each other!” Yeah because otherwise you wouldn’t have had anything. Also a lot of people were super wary of anyone else because of the StaSi and their IMs (think spies recruited from the general population, literally means unofficial employee) so the “we’re in this together” was often on a more superficial level

He means they want to ease the task of abducting them to the frontlines.

There are untrackable mobile phones? I need one.

It’s a popular place for people in many of the poorer former Soviet republics to work in since Russia had a larger economy and more opportunities for higher paying jobs than back in their home countries, knowledge of Russian is widespread with historical Soviet influence/continuing Russian influence, diasporas are already there as a support network since it used to be one country and it was not especially restrictive to go over and work.

That said Russia’s far right has been venomous about this since their Islamophobia doesn’t mix well with a bunch of Muslim people arriving from Central Asia. Groups like Russian Community have been attacking mosques, people who look foreign, stealing from them etc. and as the state is sort of scraping the barrel on bodies to send to Ukraine in some communities have far right militias actually partner with the police and work in their operations with the name of establishing “order”.

This law in the post and tightening of visas is red meat to those sorts of far-right factions in exchange for their continued support.

Uh, what’s the difference to a regular phone? Can’t they just triangulate positions as they please? They’re in a dictatorship, it’s not like they need a warrant.

GPS, GLONASS and WiFi based locating is much more precise then just using phone base triangulation. It is also really hard, when you only have a single antenna in some far of village in Siberia or so.

that’s not accurate enough

Now would be a great time to get out of Russia for everyone who can. They will run into massive problems supplying their population with food and so on. They will try to enlist every man for their war where they will die. They will blame migrants, because they always do. Get out if you can.

Now

You misspelled yesterday

Is already standard in all Smartphones

“US hacks Russian app, foments rebellion through targeted advertisement at pissed off surveillance opponents. More at 11.”

In Europe, many countries require mandatory registration of SIM cards, which means you must provide personal identification, such as a passport, to activate a phone number. This regulation is primarily aimed at enhancing security…

We already have this although Europe. You have a phone, government can track you.

you are not required to have your phone with you. you are not dropped from the registration if your phone does not send your location for 3 (or any) days. cellular location tracking is bad but not as accurate as GPS tracking russia will be doing there.

Better than what they’re doin to them in America, I guess.

Key takeaway: Some people apparebtly migrate to Russia..?!

That’s what surprised me, as well.

There are much worse places even as it stands and better countries are not too keen on accepting migrants from there. They also have a morality visa (i.e. if you are a homophobic racist piece of shit you are free to move in), that a whopping 700 people used to migrate out of EU/US/Canada in 3 years lol.
