Photoshop alternative now free - Affinity (runs via Lutris)

Despite this not being FOSS like GIMP, I think it’s great that there is at least some very viable alternative that can run on Linux even with some workaround, for free (besides Photopea).

Cool! Not libre, but it enables new category of people to comfortably transition to Linux.
I can imagine the anger at Adobe 🤣

“Free”, but with a paywall back door .

The AI stuff is paid… if anyone cares for it. I installed it and didn’t have to login anywhere.

But you had to register to get the download file, right?

I had to enter email, I entered a dummy one

Is this better than GIMP?

I’m going to say yes, easily. Even Photopea is significantly better than GIMP. But for most basic tasks GIMP is fine. IDK if GIMP even supports non destructive editing though

it does now, most important feature in gim3 is non destructive layers

Glimpse was actually a good alt to Photoshop which actually was just a refined UI for Gimp under the hood. The project halted after their maintainers decided to stop it. Last I recall, they were definitely open source. IDK which license they used but folks could probably fork it and continue the work there as well.

Woah, I guess I’m almost two weeks behind on the news that Affinity is now free!

Just remember folks….if it’s not open source, and you’re not paying for the product, then you ARE the product. Likely a tracking nightmare.

Don’t get me wrong: the guide is awesome 🎉

My brain just keeps bringing up:
Isn’t that was Bottles is intended for? You can add “playbooks” /scripts to setup an application. Also Lutris has the tooling for that (even though they are gaming oriented).

Shouldn’t it be possible to take the Bottles guide and shove it way up into… ahm.. Bottles?

i stuck with GIMP and its still number 1 for me :3

https://graphite.rs/ is a free open source Photoshop alternative with great default shortcuts

Fuck bending over backwards to accommodate them, they can do a Linux release or GTFO, does not have to be FOSS, just native

I used to use Affinity Publisher and Design all the time back when i was on Windows, now I just use Inkscape and Scribus

Years later, still trying to get my head around Lightroom changing to Darktable because DT is so much more powerful and Itm a fuckibg lazy idiot but that’s Adobe.

does not have to be FOSS

I’m basically not interested in software anymore if it’s not FLOSS. I don’t even mess with non-free source-available software or proprietary freeware anymore.

You don’t have to be elitist about it though. Most people find switching to Linux difficult because of no immediate good alternatives. Having at least something even if not FOSS or native helps immensely

While I agree with a native port. I think work around like this is also good too since it shows demand. I mean it’s why there is a good level of hype around Linux Gaming thanks to Steam and its Proton compatibility layer.

So long as Affinity isn’t blocked from running like what adobe does. I think this is fine until a universal binary is possible.

In what way is DT more powerful than LR? When I used DT like 2 years ago it couldn’t do half the shit that LR has as basic functions, much less the crazier stuff.

Publisher and Design are such great pieces of software. It really hurt my soul when I had to abandon them as I moved to Linux:(

https://www.photopea.com/

Free Photoshop in a browser. Some modest ads, nothing intrusive. Ublock is stopping those for now. I’d be glad to pay for such fine software, maybe I’d pay the $5/mo. were I a pro.

I usually disable ads for that site since they provide amazing stuff for free!!!

Anyone know how this compares to Krita?

I enjoyed it more than Krita. I find the UI more intuitive and closer to Photoshop, which was my #1 (at least for CS6). Photoshop remains the only piece of software that doesn’t have a reasonable subsitiute or Linux client.

Interesting. I’ll give it a try, thanks!

Not open source folks. Don’t fucking use this shite. They have shills all over Reddit and don’t like being called out on it.

Hey! How about side loading! Or maybe selling your personal information to Walmart?

Hmmm it looks like you could use green paint based on your recent Photoshop of your porch with that naked dude!

Or maybe it will send things like your favorite temperature level or music or sleeping patter or sex position to Farmers Insurance so they can charge you more!

I use Darktable and GIMP for my photography workflow. Its good but not great. Affinity is worth trying for me and probably many others. I’ve been on the cusp of loading a modified version of windows onto a machine. Hopefully this works
