Approved Bots
'Them' is a queer website. Mass/covert surveillance is relevant to queer people as the current state of things is to track, harass and kill queer people. The 'dystopian nightmare' has more hostile to minority populations and often has been. It is broadly harmful now to the general population, yes. ["Is this your first time?" meme insert here]
The effects on queer people have its relevance here, but the article’s focus on this topic seems to diminish the severity of the effects of surveillance on our immigrant population who are actively being detained with no due process right now. I don’t think that should be treated as an aside in an article like this.
