Political Memes@lemmy.world•Remember when not knowing science was considered a failing grade?
3·1 day agoI mean I guess you’re welcome lol… I hate that I remember like every single fucking thing this shitheel has done. It can eat away at you, watching nothing happen to these evil ghouls.
Only tangentially related, but… I decided at the start of 2025 to hit the little star to save a post on Lemmy every time I see something awful and illegal being done by Trump administration. Get a little running list going, maybe I could even use it to convince my parents to stop being fascists (nope).
Or I dunno if I thought maybe I’d come back years later and revisit, or compile into a goddamn coffee table book or something (“Remember this shit? One Harrowing Article a Day for a Year”? I dunno).
Turns out there were just way too many.
It’s unwieldy, and the Lemmy “saved article” page, bless its heart, was not built for parsing or navigating in any real way. Now I’ve got thousands (tens of thousands?) of saved articles and I wish I had enough programming knowhow to scrape them from my account into a CSV and categorize them or something…
Anyway, I don’t know why I’m even saying all of this other than to say that I remembered these ones without having to look at my saved articles.

2·1 day agoWhen was the last time it read the book? The entire point of Newspeak was to shape how people thought, and it worked like gangbusters.
To meet the ideological requirements of Ingsoc (English Socialism) in Oceania, the Party created Newspeak, a controlled language of simplified grammar and restricted vocabulary designed to prevent people from being able to think critically. The Newspeak language thus limits the person’s ability to articulate and communicate abstract concepts, such as personal identity, self-expression, and free will,[1][2]
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newspeak
You can’t grasp the concept of personal identity, let alone internalize it and actually have one, if the concept for it doesn’t exist in the language.
Orwell could not be more clear about this stuff. To the point where my teenage (before witnessing it first hand in the US) self found those parts to be boring and far fetched. Boy was I wrong.
From the book:
the lexicologist character Syme discusses his editorial work on the latest edition of the Newspeak Dictionary:
By 2050—earlier, probably—all real knowledge of Oldspeak will have disappeared. The whole literature of the past will have been destroyed. Chaucer, Shakespeare, Milton, Byron—they’ll exist only in Newspeak versions, not merely changed into something different, but actually contradictory of what they used to be. Even the literature of The Party will change. Even the slogans will change. How could you have a slogan like Freedom is Slavery when the concept of freedom has been abolished? The whole climate of thought will be different. In fact, there will be no thought, as we understand it now. Orthodoxy means not thinking—not needing to think. Orthodoxy is unconsciousness.[1]

And thankfully for that Whataburger employee, it was not in fact his fault. I believe that we have confirmed that.

2·2 days agoFauci pled the fifth when asked, which was the smart thing to do. But if it wasn’t written by him, I imagine he would say so.
The last couple of weeks have shown Bashear to be a spineless coward.
His handling of the McConnell situation shows that he is not capable of meeting the moment.
We need someone who understands how dire our situation truly is, and is willing to act.
She is missing a lot of international affairs experience.
It’s really too bad that they’re not allowed to hire anyone to help them…
While it’s fun to watch, getting under the skin of elderly sexist conservatives is not the best leadership a country as diverse as the US needs if the tribalism is to be turned down. I’m open to be surprised though.
What does this have to do with AOC running for president?
See I don’t understand what you people mean by that?
They mean that she made that one vote to approve funding for Israel’s defensive Iron Dome (that she has since been clear was a mistake that she regrets) that one time.
That’s it. Nobody will ever be good enough, so instead we’ll get pedophilic fascism and we’ll stfu about it.
I imagine an election with AOC at the top of the Democratic ticket would lead to a pretty big down-ballot effect where other Democrats and progressives at lower levels of government get more wins
an actual workers or labor party might be one possibility
This would ensure that the Democrats never win an election ever again.
If we had a parliamentary system and/or did away with first past the post, then we can start talking about viable third parties.

Eh, I had assumed you’d already eaten them.
What the hell am I going to do with more tonsiliths anyway? I’m swimming in em Scrooge McDuck style.
