Will our descendants be around to remember that we knew all this time ago? Will something else evolve in the absence of our lineage and be intelligent enough to figure it out like we figured out the original Himalayas?

But in the meantime, and perhaps long after, we’re in for a few rumbles and broken pots.

Interesting. For as long as I’ve been alive, it hasn’t been legal here (UK) for a brand to specifically name and disparage another brand in their advertising like that. (This doesn’t apply to political parties, for “reasons”, but I digress.)

That is, I’m not sure how it came to be in my head. I had thought I had come up with it independently, but I have to admit there’s a chance I’ve seen someone else use it over the intervening decades, and it has ultimately come from the advertising you’re quoting.

Nintendon’t on account of their rabid intellectual property protection and litigious nature.

Works as both what they might say to would-be infringers as well as advice to avoid them. (Which people ignore because Zelda, Mario and childhood memories.)

What about it? I admit that I don’t know a great deal about systemd and all its subcommands - it took me a while to figure out how to disable that service properly, for example - but the manual seems to suggest that systemd-analyze is for startup processes, not shutdown.

I’ll gladly take pointers on how to get it to say why a particular service hung on shutdown.

Millennial? Roy Chubby Brown is technically pre-Boomer, and made a career out of throwing in unnecessary vulgarity.

Although you could argue that is necessary in his case because it’s well documented that he couldn’t get a laugh otherwise.

But there have been plenty of pre-Millennials doing, and enjoying, this sort of thing, so you can’t square this accusation at that generation in particular.

This actually got me to go track down the systemd service that has been responsible for being unresponsive and causing a 90-second shutdown delay way more often than it should.

The kernel library for integrating telecommunications operations and their requirements into the system? I think there was a patch for that in my update manager last week.

Well, I’ve learned about a new distro today. Feels worthy of being added to the list of “want to fool around with but will probably never get around to.”

Me with anxiety: Do you know what happens after a long period without a storm?

To at least one member of my family, who uses it often, this is an abbreviation of “silly sausage”, which in turn is a variant of “silly person”. It is a term of endearment, but there is a mild negative connotation.

“Dingus”, “doofus” and “oaf” are comparable terms.

My point being that I wouldn’t want “sausage” to be the pet name given to me by a significant other. Other people won’t have this usage in their family or community and may have other opinions, of course.

My town used to have a Burger King. A Whopper I had there one time was quite literally the best burger I’ve ever had, before or since.

That said, this was ~30 years ago at one specific franchise, and I hear that BK food is terrible now, so maybe this doesn’t count.

Anyone remember Due South? It was a comedy crime drama about a Canadian Mountie trying to track down his father’s killer.

It got cancelled, but the fans protested and it was rescued at the last minute. The problem was there were a couple of significant changes to the characters and the whole thing felt off, like it was in an alternative universe… except they quite clearly implied that it was the same one and they wrote at least one of the changes into the plot, contributing to the discomfort. They never explained the wolf clearly being different though.

A similar thing happened between seasons with a more obscure show called WPC 56 about a policewoman in 1950s England, but that was clearly due to budget cuts rather than outright cancellation.

Then there’s Red Dwarf series VII, which proved that more money is not always a good thing. It was a hard left turn that upset a lot of fans.

… and I’m sure a lot of people will say the same about what’s happened to and in Doctor Who over the decades the show’s been running.

Did people go out and learn modern Italian after seeing Gladiator?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against anything that might be good for Greek and Greece in general. Good for them and those who choose to learn the language. It just seems a bit… misplaced?
