Apparently Windows 11 sent out an EOL notice for October 2026 recently too. https://www.tech2geek.net/windows-11-24h2-support-ends-on-october-13-2026-heres-how-to-stay-protected/
Steam Machine also came out and sold around 20k machines in the USA. I also wouldn’t discount how good LLMs are at guiding people through “complicated” things like swapping to Linux. GPT for example suggests moving to Linux on first prompt after asking how to fix the windows 11 eol message. Seems like a perfect storm that led to a ton of people swapping to Linux for a wide variety of reasons.

I’ve noticed some pretty big spikes in download stats for certain distros like CachyOS and Bazzite, too. I’ve seen a lot of stories of people churning through Linux in the past and recently coming back to it because the software has matured so much and Windows and OSX are enshittifying.
I think datacenter use may be part of it- usage peaks at the middle of the working day and the highest peaks are on Monday. Its also possible a lot of companies related to AI swapped to Linux distros on workforce computers to reduce headaches in managing AI workloads. There is something that happened July 1st-6th that caused the trendline to accelerate, maybe Kimi K3 news and market shocks? But it should be noted Bazzite and CachyOS use peaked around this time as well.

Totally not a proxy state though 🙄
Kate’s dope for everything, small notes, code.

Yeah, I kinda hate to admit this, but I just don’t have the free time to dedicate to this project as I used to, so it’s kind of dead. It’s the classic I-started-a-job OSS killer.
Some options for people looking to migrate off Drop:
Fork it! It’s OSS for a reason. I picked a stack that’s very easy to learn, and if you really want to, it’s well-known by LLMs so you can continue to vibe-support it. LANCommander is kind of my recommendation, despite not having used it, It’s OSS and has some awesome features that I’d love for Drop to have. GameVault seems to be the most established option, but it’s not OSS and has a paid tier. It’s lack of support for Linux and, in my opinion, a weird looking UI led me to create Drop. RomM looks like the best for emulators, if you’re into that. Sorry to disappoint with the project, but I am always available to answer technical and support questions if you decide to fork it - I’d love for someone to pick it up and continue maintaining it.
Edit: I’m also happy to hand off maintainer permissions to someone in the community that I can trust, and would like to take over the project.
Yeah fuck you human
